I want to like this shop. Longtime REI member and the people and staff are nice and knowledgeable. However, I purchased a new bike for my wife that was supposedly set up properly, but there are sooo many safety issues and corners cut with this setup. It was obvious someone very new did the work and I thankfully noticed when she came home with it. Shame on REI not checking bikes before they get sold, people can die with unsafe cabling.

I do not recommend visiting them at all. They were extremely unprofessional during my visit, and I am extremely disappointed with this location. I went to this location for a return for an unused item, went with a receipt and everything, but they immediately assumed I was "stealing". We had to go through a whole back and forth until they finally honored my request but did not show me any respect or even apologized for the whole situation. For a company that values community and outdoor values, this location should definitely know better than to disrespect their customers. I hope management retrains their staff and improve on their judgement, because this is extremely unacceptable.

Nice big and open parking lot. Apparently there's construction going on one side of the parking lot and I heard houses are getting put up, but I'm not too sure. Nevertheless, this particular REI has a really big location as well as a discount store in a smaller building, that's just about 20 feet away from their actual store. They always have a great selection of camping/hiking and outdoor equipment! I've bought some great hiking shoes here that were waterproof and currently just got a great jacket that is very lightweight and incredibly warm or at least keeps the wind off of me when I hike. Some things are little overpriced but within inflation everything seems to be expensive so whatever. That's why I always like checking there secondhand items first and then coming to the actual store. Great idea!

IMHO I picked a great time to visit REI to redeem a member reward since a clearance sale was going on! I wasn't exactly sure how much my reward was, so a nice young lady at check-out confirmed the amount I had to redeem. I had two weeks to spend it, or it would expire. I was happily surprised to see a lot of clearance racks and other sale items to peruse. I am definitely a sale shopper, so this was looking pretty good for me. I found some cute lightweight hiking socks for $24.95. That's a lot for me to pay for one pair of socks but if I had to, my reward would cover it. Then I remembered that I wanted to check out their backpacks. I was in the market for a nice travel backpack. Wouldn't you know it, I saw a 30% Off sign for the REI Ruckpack backpacks! The one I was interested in had a tag but no price on it, so I couldn't figure out what I would be paying. Wish they had a price check machine situated around the store... I had to wander the huge store to find a green vested REI employee, who was able to tell me the original price, $109, and then the 30% off sale price. The Rucksack isn't perfect (the water bottle holder wouldn't secure my Hydro Flask safely), but the sale price minus my reward, made it a great deal. If I don't like it, I have a year to return it. (I think it's a keeper!) No, I didn't buy the cute socks. The backpack was enough. Thanks REI! I'll see ya in another year at your next clearance sale!

My favorite REI store. Store layout is easy. Very clean and organized. Plenty of parking. REI has everything you need, especially for camping. I already dropped a few $$$ for camping goods here. Definitely recommend you to wait for the sales. REI has a great return policy. Also recommend you to invest in that REI membership, it's worth it especially if you need camping essentials, hiking stuff, anything athletic etc.

Wow! This REI is awesome! I hadn't been to this location in years, so little did I know that they went through a major renovation. The store is huge yet impeccably organized. It makes you want to roam around and check out every single thing! Not too long ago, I had gone to the REI in Santa Cruz and thought that one was the best one I'd seen, but this Saratoga/San Jose store is equally as great. The staff here are also very friendly and eager to help customers, which we appreciate! Even though my hubby and I popped in to pick up our online order (new snowboard woohoo!), we ended up wandering around the entire store. Athletic gear, footwear, snow gear, camping gear, gear you didn't even know you needed or that it even existed...they got it all! They even have heavily discounted returned items or gently used stuff (kind of have to be lucky with scoring a good find in that section but anything's possible!). And don't forget to ask about their membership program if you're not already a member. There are some really sweet perks with that too. We couldn't believe it had taken us so long to jump on the REI bandwagon, but we're glad we did!

One of the premier stores for hiking and camping supplies in the Bay Area. Excellent customer service and a wide selection including bicycles. They sell high quality items so some choices can be expensive. HOWEVER, don't fret, there are many clearance items on sale. I've been going to REI for years and highly recommend them. Consider becoming a member for extra savings.

Hello today I bought a mountain bike at this store in Saratoga I bought it online to pick up at this store we were waiting from 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm for them to deliver the bike the girl who helped us served us rudely and she is with my children no kindness from her name is Kim fortunately the bike did not come with pedals she took my children to show them the pedals when she showed them she left and did NOT finish serving us or finish closing the delivery I upset I spoke with another colleague of hers who would finish serving me and I took the bike without pedals very very bad the service is not comparable to the store "Bass Pro Shops" they have good service from the moment you enter their store good kindness, terrible service I did not come to ask them for the free bike to receive this bad service With that attitude from your worker, leaving us there without finishing the documentation, she left us waiting there like idiots and decided to go buy the pedals at another store. The service is terrible. Remember that customers take care of themselves, treat each other well so that they come back to buy more products and that with those purchases they can pay the workers.

There's 20 staff in the area working even though there is not a lot of people and only 2 cashiers open when there are 9 of them. Because you under the assumption that there is not a lot of people, there are 10 people waiting in line. And when another person comes, and there are finally 3 of them open. One person leaves and it's back to two. But other than that, the staff are amazing, there are always great deals, and it's always a joy to come in! Just a little problem I noticed that made me a little upset

In general, I love REI and I love this location extra because they have the REI co-op store right next door. Before they used to have garage sales once in a while to get rid of returned items. Now, with this co-op store, it's like they always have garage sales but you don't have to wait in a long line or fight other customers for something prescious. They are used items that are mostly still in good shape at a discounted price. If you're lucky, you might get yourself a really good deal. The only thing is all sales at co-op store are final sales, no return so make sure to check your item carefully before buying it. The main REI store is much bigger though and has more selection. You just have to buy at full price. They do have the clearance section which has a big discount: you still can try it out and return if it's not the right fit. Or wait until they have discount 25% (for members) off like this time. Sales ends May 29th so hurry!! You definitely should get their membership. It's worth it. Sometimes they even have special promotion to get free membership too. Keep an eye out for it :) Another great point about REI is they have 1-year return policy (even if you use it already) and very good customer service. I feel safe buying from REI knowing if it's not right for me, I can return it.

Today I came in to look for new socks. I found what I needed plus some new trail pants. The store is clean and many of the employees interacted with me. In the past I did not have a great experience which I have emailed to the company. But today Carmen @ the register was very friendly and accommodating. She actually asked me for my membership phone #. She did not rush me or neglect to ask me for the number. We also looked next door @ the REI Co-op. My niece found boots and an insect repellant shirt. It was a great find for what she needed.

Today I was in looking for a rain jacket that I had seen on their website, trying to get an idea of sizing. I found it, but I also found one that was from North Face that was on sale for half off. They didn't have my size, but Kathy, a sales clerk asked if she could help. Looking for a medium, I said. She looked it up on her phone and said the Santa Cruz store has 2. But don't go there without calling first. She looked up the phone number, and gave me the item number. She was so helpful. And yes, I got the jacket. For some reason, this is showing up as a review by my husband, but I am actually the one that Kathy helped.

Staff was super helpful. They happen to have exactly what I needed on hand in the store and I walked out with everything I needed within 10 minutes. Tons of parking. I was actually really shocked by their selection. I thought that there is no way that they're going to have exactly what I needed which was so specific. Bought: Two pairs of kids, climbing shoes. A kids harness I was really surprised that they happen to have the exact sizes of kids shoes on hand. I walked out of there, so happy they happen to have one last kids harness also. What are the odds? I thought I was going to have to order online and I was not looking forward to doing that. My kids love their new shoes and I no longer have to pay for the rentals. And the price ended up being really great especially since they accept gift cards. We are one happy indoor climbing family. Thanks to REI of Saratoga. The staff was ready to help in case we weren't able to find what we needed. They were ready to go online and provide what we needed.

This is a solid REI shop that we found. It definitely has an emphasis on bikes and repairs, so it's definitely your go to for that. There's a wide selection of items for all your outdoor needs. We always like to go when there's holiday deals or specific member discounts. I love their variety of different shoe wear depending on the outdoor activity. My husband found some nice running shoes that he really liked. The staff was super helpful and different team members would check up on us.

What a great day at REI! Stopped in to get a replacement buckle for my Osprey Backpack. Oddly, the pack was made with two female ends for the waist strap. James, one of the employees, was very quick to help locate the replacement clips in the store. He even pulled me to the side and helped replaceme it right then and there. I was originally going to remove the stitching and put the buckle on, but he repaired my bag without having to cut any strings! I was extremely impressed with how helpful he was. His colleague also informed me of ospreys great customer service. Both associates were very informative A quick $6 fix for a bag that is going to be very useful on my international travels.

I am Deaf. I shop at this store frequently. I was so happy that an employee knows sign language. I was sooo thrilled that didn't need to reply on my phone to communicate. She was able to answer my questions regarding promotions. That person's name is Abby. Regarding the bicycle shop, I brought my bike in for some minor work. The head of the screw came off. I was worried. But I had faith in the folks to get this fixed. And, they did! Many thanks to them. (I was not angry. Many folks comment that when I am relaxed I do look angry.)

Love REI and this location is great! The employees are super knowledgeable and helpful. They give great advice on any gear questions you have. Highly recommended getting a membership if you don't already have one. The Re-Supply, formally REI garage sale, is amazing. Before you would have to wake up super early and wait on a long line to be the first one on in hopes of getting something good. Now you can just drop by and see what they have anytime. You still got to be lucky to find the prime gear but they have great deals. Ive gotten a few basically brand new items super cheap here. REI is my go to shop for all outdoor needs.

"Get Out" vibes. My sister and I went into this REI and I felt weird vibes, like I was not welcome. 5 minutes into walking around, my sister stated that she was being stared at by someone at the register. When she looked at him, he continued staring right into her eyes. All the employees kept staring at us, and only some of them asked if we needed help.

I love and live this store. Especially the shoe department they are super reliable. I was help by a young lady who had dirty blonde hair and her hair. Tied up. She was knowledgeable about which shoes was appropriate to wear especially on steep hills for my first time as a hiker with a toddler. I just want to say love the shoe she picked out for me. I almost lost my kid if I hadn't had the right shoe to hike in. Went hiking with my daughter and she decides to walk a bit off the edge of the cliff but thank god I had her close to me before losing the crazy 2 year old. I'm jus thankful the gripe of the shoes saved the close fall of my kiddo. That's to the person who works in the shoe department also In the clothing department. And everyone there your customer service is top. The value of the camping gear and shoes is well worth every penny.

Was just there looking for a pair of On CloudFlyer Road running shoes. First off no one in their shoe section greeted me or offered to ask if I am finding everything okay. 2 workers are working with an older women and one was just talking it up with an older man who never even bought shoes, rather chat the workers ear off. Right after the young kid walked to the back and never came back out. I'm standing there for 10 minutes waiting for someone to help and grab me a size for me. 15 minutes, 20 minutes. Gone! The fact of the matter I was willing, interested and ready to purchase the shoes from REI. They just LOST a $200 easy sale (shoe is $160 plus tax, easily $200 pair), just due to lack of customer service. So, I left and bought the shoes online. Today I went to REI in Saratoga around 2:15pm on 6/24/23 to pick up an online order that I purchased. After picking up the item, I put it in my tote bag and decided to browse the women's clothing, and found some items I wanted to try on. In addition I wanted to try on the dress I just picked up. I was askew by the REI staff working the dressing room me how many items I wanted to try on, and then they got me a number, but then was shocked when she asked me to leave my bag outside and not bring into the fitting room. This was my soft handbag and maybe 16 inches and made from soft fabric. Hmmmm she clearly was concerned I was perhaps going to shoplift and put something in my bag?!?! I was so taken aback by this and said - you just game me a number for 3 items. Then she said she might not be there when I came out of the fitting room. Hmmm again!! . I told her I wanted to keep my bag with me - it has my valuables in it as well as the dress I purchased that I wanted to try on. I love REI and have been a member and customer for 25-30 years, and have never had anyone ask me to leave my bag outside of the fitting room and not bring it in. It made me feel horrible - and I'm pretty sure not consistent with the how REI would want me to feel as a longtime and valued customer. I will stay away from this REI after this experience- maybe they're trained to do this but if so no thank you to shopping there anymore!!

Can't go wrong with REI... when you can afford things haha... This is a pretty big location compared to the other ones in the Bay. The staff is really helpful and not really pushy. The layout can get a bit confusing so you'll probably need a few minutes to acclimate yourself. It's located in a large shopping center so parking isn't an issue at all.

I rented a backpacking pack from here and they made it so easy to do online. FYI they don't do same day rentals so make sure to plan ahead. I usually go to the Sunnyvale one but this one seemed much more well stocked as well as being well staffed. They have such a big variety of backpacks compared to my usual store. When I went to pickup the sales person was very helpful with measuring me to make sure the bag fit and helped me adjust it as well as showing me the features of the bag. I feel that the staff here are really knowledgeable and helpful with finding the right gear you need. Will definitely be back for other rentals and gear needs. Parking is easy as they have a big lot in a shopping center.

My sister and I decided to go to REI so that she could try on some hiking shoes for a very belated birthday present. We went with my 1.5 year old, and it was going to be our "afternoon adventure." boy, was it! We went to the shoe department and was greeted by a salesperson by the name of Olivia. She asked what we were there for and my sister mentioned to get some hiking shoes. She glanced over at the selection and asked what she had in mind. My sister mentioned a good pair of hiking shoes. She was quite sarcastic in her response (maybe both of our interpretations?) and said "well, here they are!". It felt as though my sister had to spell out exactly what she wanted, when in reality, she wanted to figure out what she wanted with the help of the salesperson. My toddler was being a normal toddler and Olivia had mentioned "can you make her not do that??" when she was stepping over some rope that precariously held a tub of socks. Taken aback, I said "uh okay." It took me a second to realize that this is not what customer service should look like at all. Olivia had gone to find a pair of hiking boots for my sister and when she came back I mentioned "Hey, maybe you're having a bad day or something, but I was just put off by your comments and the way we were approached." Her response? "uh okay, then you should leave. byeee" and she walked off. yeah. we were shocked too. Of course, then I spoke to the manager (cassy? i think). who was quite friendly and even offered my daughter a woody toy (gotta love toy story). We felt more welcomed there instantly and my sister's search for hiking shoes was resolved. TLDR: avoid Olivia if you have children. All other salespeople seem kid friendly. Know what you are looking for if you need to get shoes.

This REI like all the others is clean, friendly, and employees are super nice and helpful! Special shoutout to Mark and Aubrey in the bike department. I brought in one of those Xiaomi electric scooters in with two flat tires because I'd spent hours trying to change the tubes on them myself to no avail except bruised thumbs. (And I used to be a bike mechanic too. These scooters are notoriously tough to change the tubes on.) The two of them were so nice and accomodating and - after a bunch of elbow grease, some huge tire levers, and a bunch of soapy water - managed to swap both my tubes for me and only charged the standard tube swap fee! Thanks so much, my thumbs are grateful.

This review is for the bike shop (Matt, Jessica, Charlie and the whole bike shop team) and long long long overdue. I purchased a bike from this REI store almost a decade ago and recently had some difficulty putting on a pair of new tires (don't get me wrong, I've been doing tire or tube replacement all by myself on all the bikes I owned - thanks REI for offering the free class teaching how to fix flat tire). So I called the shop and explained that I needed some extra help. I believe it was Jessica on the phone. She told me to just bring the wheels in and they could do it for me for free. I was super delighted (a moment ago I was still frustrated with wrestling with installing the tires). I brought the wheels in without appointment and they were able to accommodate me immediately. Due to the extreme user unfriendly design of the new tire, we went through multiple tubes to get things eventually worked out. I highly appreciate the work and time the team at the bike shop has put into to help me. It was almost a half day work without me paying anything for their time. They are the best team (friendly, patient, listening to customer and actually fixing stuff). Last year I brought my bike in for fixing some issues that were caused by another shop. They did a great job helping as well and demonstrated great customer obsession. I highly recommend REI San Jose and have been a member for over a decade. I have always been satisfied with the service I received from this particular store. By the way, if you own a bike, you should definitely join the REI membership. They offer quite a few free services to their members! ( This is the first time I've ever brought my bike in for tire replacement but they do this free of cost for their members!)

this rei is in a great location, convenient to both highways 85 & 280, located in the el paseo de saratoga shopping center. there is TONS of parking here, fortunately for me, i've always come at an hour where it's not too crowded so i get rockstar parking a few steps from the main entrance! the store is a single level, but it is massive, and the layout is clear, clothes in the rear, camp supplies towards the front. registers are also in the front/left of the store and well-organized. there are restrooms in the rear/right, which have always been clean whenever i needed to use the facilities. the few times i needed to interact with a staff member, s/he has always been very friendly, whether price-checking merchandise or directing me to the fitting room or answering general questions. definitely recommend coming to this store for all your outdoor and adventurous needs!

My friend just got me into rock climbing/bouldering. I was actually recommended by several people (friends and even random people at the gym) to go to rei to buy my shoes for climbing. When I first arrived I saw Mark organizing the shoes. He was very patient and helped me with the sizing and gave me great tips on finding the best fitting shoe. I ended up going with the black diamond (they look amazing). Best part is, they were on sale! I got them for $70 instead of the original $90+! Matt, another employee was also very helpful when I was picking a chalk bag. However, I decided to just buy one on amazon since there were more designs and it was cheaper online. Anyhow, Matt and Mark were awesome!

How do you not love REI? I frequent this location enough to know my way around blindfolded but not be easily recognized, but still haven't ever had a problem. I got a bike on clearance several years ago and still get work done on it; tune ups, replacing broken parts (I am way too heavy to ride such a light road bike) and it is always done quickly and correctly for less than any other bike shops around. We were fitted for new back packs and they not only got us the best for us, but helped us pick price and quality as well. We ended up paying much less than budgeted with the help. And camping food, best selection out there and plenty of stove options for any type of camper.

So impressed by this store! It is run so professionally. Everyone I spoke to who worked there was helpful, friendly, and took attention to detail. The store follows Covid protocol very well and is very clean and organized inside, so you won't have to waste time walking around and risk bumping into anyone. So glad I was able to use my gift card here and purchase a fantastic pair of hiking shoes!

Honestly I've never had a bad experience at a REI. This location is in the San Jose/Saratoga boarders. Gets busy because I don't know where the next one is going southbound? Always someone at the front to greet you, and people working throughout the store. Kind cashiers that love the outdoors. This shop is a tad smaller than other REIs I've been too, but still great service. Glad to be a member. Oh and if you second guess becoming a member, don't! All their items are backed up guaranteed. Not going to get that from other stores.

I bought a $3k bike. The email said the purchase included a 1 hour setup and tuning of the bike. When I went to the store I said I wanted to order pedals too but they wouldn't help with them. They also did not help with saddle adjustment or anything like that and shooed me out of the store after signing a 'you're responsible now' waiver. When I got home I take it for the first ride and the front shifter doesn't work and the chain grinds against the front derailleur. The most disappointing purchase I've ever made and the end of my relationship with REI.

This is a big carrier of patagonia. I was willing to go out of my way to drive to sf just to transition to the brand off The North Face but I'm glad I stumbled upon some of their product here. This is right across the way from the Westgate stripmall along Saratoga. If you know where AMC 14 and PetCo is, you'll arrive at the right place. So jumpers/yogamom stuff in the back, bikes in the middle and snow gear to the front right as you enter. Those are the main sections of the store. You'll find some friendly help at the Customer Service hole by Snow, as well as any smiling face with a green vest throughout. A good amount of mirrors too--you can try on just about everything to your heart's content. Gonna be back next week.

Came in looking for a shirt for Wifey but they were out of stock on her size so we went to the customer department. The lady behind the counter had an attitude because we wanted her to order one for us and have it shipped to the store. She told us they were completely out of her size in the color wifey wanted and only had one in lavender gray. So wifey said ok order it. "Customer service" credit card please. "Me" I want to pay cash "customer service" you can't pay cash, you need to buy a gift card and pay that way. "Me" What??!! Ok what ever. "Customer service" it should be here in 6 days "with an attitude" "me" ok thank you. 2 hours later I received an e-mail stating my wife's shirt is in "whaaat?" As I looked at the e-mail I noticed it was the wrong color and wrong size.. argh just shoot me. I called customer service and spoke with Andy "nice guy" told him everything that happened "even he was confused" after A lengthy conversation he stated that the color that my wife originally wanted was in fact, in a bunch of other stores and he could get it for me in her size no problem. He then said can I please have your credit card # so I can order it for you? "Me" what!!!?? I paid for it already!! "Him" what? It's not entered in our computer. "Me" I got the receipt. "Him" let me look deeper in another computer, I'll call you back in 10. 10 minutes later phone rings "him" Mr. Henry I got you squared away you should get the shirt by the end of next week. "Me" thank you Andy. I'm giving Andy 5 stars!! But that other lazy Azz!! Chick gets -10 stars I think her last name was Arnold "So if REI is Reading this please take note"

I wanted to write this review for Andrew that works in the Saratoga REI. I brought a few camping chairs on REI.com on July 4th sale. They were supposed to arrive on July 8th for camping trip leaving July 9th. Found out there was a delay at 8:30pm, where am I going to find 3 camping chairs when all the stores are closing soon? I called the closest REI store to me, and Andrew picked up and told me he will take care of me. I finished the call at 8:45pm and tried to get to store before it closed at 9pm. Andrew was standing at the door when I arrived, because he was worried I get there a bit late and his colleagues closed the doors on me. What a warm and kind gesture, then he told me there is one kind of chair that had a lot of stock, even though it was more expensive than the type I brought, he still marked it down for me so it matches with the sale price I brought it for. He carried all 3 chairs in the store, and asked me if I need help delivering to the car. He walked me out of the store and told me some tips about the camping site I am going. He was so willing to help, understanding, and thinking from my perspective. Amazing customer service!! He totally sold me and have my trust, I will be buying everything in the Saratoga REI from now on in support of his awesomeness!
