Words cannot describe the absolutely incredible experience of Rekero Camp! My friend and I went on safari in Kenya not knowing what to expect, and we were amazed by the staff and overall experience at Rekero. We stayed for three nights and wish we could have stayed many more.
I can’t say enough good things about the staff—they were really what made everything so incredible. The managers Sam and Timothy were so kind and made sure everything taken care of for us.
Japher was such a great waiter throughout the stay, and Moses was the best housekeeper. We loved getting to know Isaac and Joseph, who made us feel so safe escorting us to and from our tents each morning before sunrise and evening after dark.
Best of all, our guide Saruni was EXCEPTIONAL. Because of his extraordinary knowledge of the animals and his years of experience guiding, we saw every animal we could have ever wanted to including the ones that are tougher to catch a glimpse of like the leopard and cheetah. He was so kind and funny, and we loved spending every day with him. We were so sad to leave him at the end of the three days—we really became friends over our time together!
A few notes in case they are helpful to others:
—I was worried it would be too hot without air conditioning, but we had no issues at all. There was a large standing fan in the room, and that, in conjunction with the breeze off the river, made it more than comfortable.
—We never had any issues with bugs or mosquitoes at any time at the camp or elsewhere in the Mara.
—My friend and I were a bit cautious going into this trip being two single female travelers, but we never once felt anything other than complete ease once we were at Rekero.
—Asilia (the company that runs Rekero) only hires local Masai guides, and this makes all the difference. The guides have grown up around the animals, and they are so knowledgeable about them. We heard from numerous people that other camps’ guides follow Asilia vehicles around because they know the guides know what they’re doing/where they’re going, and we witnessed this first hand.
—Multiple other groups staying at Rekero had stayed there before and were returning for annual visits. This shows how quality the camp is that people keep returning.
—The food was so delicious. This was something I was nervous about going into the trip, but absolutely loved once I experienced it. Great cuisine options.
—The camp is not fenced, so animals walk through at night! This is incredible because you get to hear their calls. We never felt nervous about this because the security staff was so top notch.
Prior to this trip, I thought going on a safari was a bucket list trip you do once in your life—I couldn’t have been more wrong! This experience showed me that safari is the most relaxing, amazing experience you can ever have. All of that is dependent on the people—the staff at every level of the camp make or break your experience, and the team at Rekero made sure our expectations were exceeded in every possible way. I can’t wait to come back to Kenya, and I plan to stay at Rekero every time I visit in the future!
