On the Grid : Granja Canigó Rekons

"This is the place for Barcelona’s best Argentinean style pasties, plus amazing sandwiches filled the very best Catalan products. Open all day long and with a terrace that occupies one of the neighbourhood’s sunniest spots. A perfect Sunday morning plan would be, stop in for breakfast and then check out the old book market, which is right in front." - Malva Sawada & Enric Badrinas

Authentic and Flavorful – A Must in Barcelona! Rekons is a cozy, welcoming spot with some of the best empanadas I’ve ever had — crispy, generously filled, and full of flavor. The menu also offers fresh salads, milanesas, hearty sandwiches, and great desserts (3 leches 🫶🏻), all at reasonable prices. The staff is friendly and quick, and the relaxed atmosphere makes it easy to enjoy your meal. A true hidden gem in the city — highly recommend!

Google
I had lunch here with a friend. Empanadas were good, the taste was spot on however I don’t think they do the empanada manually in house because they had a very precise border. This obviously doesn’t take anything off from them, they were good, saucy and warm enough. The place was nice and the waiter very friendly

Google
I really enjoyed eating here. The food tastes great, and prices are genuinely cheaper than other places. Staff are nice either. I tried empanada and steak

Google
If you want authentic empanadas, this is the place to eat. Their spicy chorizo and caprese are a must try. Make sure to ask for well done if you want it piping hot.

Alejandro Perez

Google
They have one of the best chicken sandwiches I’ve ever had! Great place to have lunch and enjoy a cold beer!

Google
For me, all empanadas were the same until I tried theirs. The dough was actually light, which I appreciated because I have a sensitive stomach, especially when it comes to white flour. Their dough was crispy and well-made. The boniato filling was also delicious. I’m giving 4 stars because the waitress seemed a bit stressed. I understand they were busy, but a smile doesn’t cost anything and can make a big difference! They don’t have sin gluten but there are other options like boniato , salad , carne …

Google
Very nice staff, well priced drinks. At the end they ask if you want to give a tip while punching in the number on the card machine which is a little awkward.. bit still, nice place! Also when we first asked they said the vermuth was €3.30 but in the end with the bill it was suddenly 3.70.. still, nice staff!

First time trying Argentinian food and i was blown away! so delicious

Yelp
Friendly service - they were very patient as we browsed their numerous empanada selections, spanning two large glass cases. We selected a beef, chicken, and potato empanada. We took these on our train to Madrid, and politely declined the gracious offer to have them warmed up. Even cold, they were good! Soft crust, and flavorful fillings. Wish I could take a suitcase of these back home!

Yelp
My most favorite meal ever in Barcelona! Thank you twinsie Denise L. for your review on this as it was so worth the solo trek for me! Came at an off hour and had much of the place to myself! I decided on the two empanada and salad special that came with a drink and espresso at the end. Never did I imagine the salad to be HUGE! Fresh veggies, cheeses, etc. that was so so tasty. But of course the star was the empanadas! I started with a chorizo and cheese, which was flavorful and tasty. But then I bit into the leek and cheese, and I was in heaven! So buttery and flaky. Hot and piping, but the perfect temperature to enjoy it. These empanadas were actually smaller than I had imagined, so I asked the waitress to give me her favorite one which was the onion and cheese. That was very tasty too! I would've bought every single option available and bring them back with me if I could have!

Yelp
I ordered the chicken and "hot meat" (beef with salsa) empanadas. 2 empanadas was enough for me. I also had a glass of red wine. The food was ready quickly. There wasn't a lot of seating inside, but there was also seating outside. The staff was friendly, and the food was good!

Yelp
I had realistic expectations when I chose this place despite the great reviews. I left really disappointed regardless. Its unfortunate, but these empanadas just are not fresh. Its clear that the meat comes from a can. We tried four different varieties and all four meats has that taste that canned meat has. The dough was clearly a manufactured crust - which is disappointing when there are so many quality patisseries in the area. We definitely would not return to Rekons.

Yelp
Empanadas were amazing. My husband and I got 4. Chicken, Spicy Chicken, 4 Cheese and Chorizo and Cheese. Just amazing. The chicken could have been heats up a bit more, but very good and worth the 1.5 mile walk!

Yelp
We decided to try this place out because we were in the mood for Cornish pasties from London. We had read that the closest thing to a pasty is an empanada. This place was recommended to us and had onion and cheese empanadas, so we decided to check it out. The employees were helpful to us in deciding what to order. I got two onion and cheese empanadas (they are not very big so if you are hungry, I would definitely get two, at least). The empanadas are good, but do not compare to pasties. I am happy I got to try them, but they are extremely different.

Yelp
It was a nice chill day and Robert M organized a lunch to meet up with Sharon E. Which was awesome and Thank you Robert M for doing that. Robert M. picked a great place. Right on the money and huge portion size. I love how BCN has set menu price where you can choose from a list of goodies and it comes with a drink and coffee after. I pretty much got the same as Robert M. salad and 2 empanada. But I splurged and got a extra one. The salad OMG it was delish. I love the cheese they put and the cheese on top of the veggies. OH gosh whoever created my plate THANK YOU for being alive. (he he he). The food was just perfect and made me full. A little extra full with my extra empanada which was the pumpkin one. Which was really good. My little girl got the hamburger and potatas bravas. I was thinking a 2 buns and a burger nope it was in a empanada form. Cute. Her potatas bravas was actually roasted and the sauce oh wow it was delish. I used it with not just the potatas but also my empanada and stuff. LOL. The staff was great. Especially since I was sitting next to 3 awesome Spanish teacher and 1 awesome cousin in law who spoke Spanish. Yay for me that is. They have a wide selection of empanada and dessert you can pick from. All you had to do was just look at the display. Awesome... Bathroom was actually very nice and clean. I will return again!!!!!

Yelp
My favorite food place while visiting Barcelona! Conveniently Rekons was down the street from where we were staying in town and we were there every day to eat their empanadas, sometimes more than once a day. There was one day where we went three times and never grew sick of the food! There is a great variety of delicious empanadas, there is something for everyone! My favorite empanada was the "Spicy Meat"! So good! The service is great too. The Spanish that I know is very basic and also Mexican Spanish but the employees were very patient and also knew some English! Whenever I look back on my Barcelona trip I know I will remember this place! Thank you!

Yelp
Super tasty empanadas, with a wide variety of choices. I really liked the spicy beef, mushroom, and chorizo empanadas. I wish I had been able to come back here more often, but will be returning when I'm back in Barcelona in the future!
google avatar

Yelp
This place has delicious empanadas! We went there this evening and it was mobbed. Loved their mushroom ones the most.

Yelp
VISIT Rekons if you're in Barcelona!!! My friends and I were on the hunt for some empanadas and were thankfully directed towards this gem. We got to try a lot of their meat empanadas, which were all delicious! I would highly recommend the chorizo empanadas. The chorizo ones were so delicious that we went back for more later on in the night. They are the best empanadas I have ever had in my life thus far. Also, don't be afraid to try some of their desserts!

Yelp
Last night I had a dream. Warm flaky crust stuffed with meat. Amazing empanadas! No wonder this place keeps winning awards for best restaurant of the year. AMBIANCE: ------------- Life is all about the simple pleasures, and if you practice this philosophy you've come to the right place. It's a small, unassuming cafe with a few tables. Nothing fancy. But it's got an entire caseload of what may become the best empanada you've ever had. SERVICE: ---------- When we arrived it was just about closing time, but the staff were still super friendly and accommodated us, even letting us eat in the restaurant while they cleaned up. That's great service right there! FOOD: -------- Just mind blowing! Every single bite was heavenly. Fresh out of the oven, each bite provided perfectly crisp, crumbly crust and just the right ratio of melty ingredients inside. The standout empanadas were the Carne (beef), Jamón y Queso (ham and cheese), and one leek & asparagus. So delicious you'll be dreaming about them too! TIP: Their cappuccino is excellent here too. DATE TIP: This place will definitely help them keep you in their thoughts and dreams. Well, it might just be the empanadas making an appearance. Ha!

Yelp
Great value for money and very nice food. My wife and I have been back a few times and we will be back again. Don't forget to order a salad they are great you can't go wrong.
google avatar

Harry K.

Yelp
Came to this establishment for some empanadas. We ordered chicken, meat, ham& cheese, and chorizo. They have a variety of different other ones we didn't get to try. We also ordered the pork loin sandwich and the papatas bravas. I really enjoyed the chorizo empanada and the potatoes.
google avatar

Shelly Z.

Yelp
Stopped by here to pick up some to go empanadas for breakfast/lunch. My favorite one was the chorizo one. There was some difficulty in figuring out what all the different flavors were, but you probably can't go wrong with whichever one you choose! I think the empanadas was slightly less expensive if you ordered them to go instead of just eating at the cafe? Def recommend if you happen to be in the area!

Yelp
Mmm, this place was so fab. A plethora of delicious empanadas made from fresh produce. Stellar service and opened late. The best deal around - a big ass salad + two empanadas of your choice + any drink (alcohol included) + coffee = 10.30 euros. Huh?? All of the empanadas we tried were delicious - eggplant, asparagus, mushroom + cheese, chicken, etc. But the unsuspecting star was the ridiculous salads. Words don't do them justice. These were the most satisfying salads ever. It was more like a bunch of wonderful stuff laid out on a plate for you. Fresh greens, slices of tomatoes, grilled zucchini, hunks of brie, dollops of burrata with honey drizzled over it, melon balls, orange slices, walnuts, parmesan crisp wrapped around grilled veggies...yes. It was nuts and we loved it! Definitely shareable. The staff rocks - all of them. If I lived in Barcelona, I'd be here nearly every day. Thank you Rekons for the wodnerful food and hospitality! And to the couple who overstayed their welcome at the outdoor table by making out and going up each other's skirt/pants - take that sh*t home and let someone else have a table.
google avatar

Luana Y.

Yelp
Came here on other yelp reviews and was not disappointed. We ordered the minikilombo salad which was huge! So much food on one plate! It also comes with 2 empanadas, a drink and coffee, all for 10.30€. Definitely get the prosciutto and goat/Brie cheese with the potatoes (Around €7), chorizo or cheese and ham empanadas. The service was also excellent as our waiter spoke English and basically went through the whole menu with us.
google avatar

Kareem A.

Yelp
The empanadas are really great and so is the vermouth. The decor is nice and it seems like it serves as a local spot during the day for students and others. Definitely a gem worth visiting if you're in the area. We made a special trip to Poble Sec just to eat the empanadas. I packed one in my bag for the plane ride home too. The capresse is my partners favorite and mine is the chicken. Everything else we had was very good too.

Yelp
Rekons is one of those perpetually busy places. And with excellent reason: This place has it all! The space is bright and airy, and the entire establishment opens onto a small number of outdoor tables and seats. In the early afternoon and late evening you can pass by and see a huge variety of people hanging out, enjoying a beer and and some excellent food while soaking up the sun....Perfect for people watching!! Everything about Rekons is inviting. Though quite busy, the staff is incredibly efficient and equally kind. Most important, though, is the delicious food! The massive displays of dozens of different empanadas! The enticing desserts! The menu overflowing with delicious options! You can pick anything from this place and rest assured that it will be extremely tasty! I'm particularly a fan of the vegetarian empanada offerings they have: eggplant, leeks, mushrooms, squash and tomatoes abound in combinations that are so good you'll want another...and another! One thing: as Rekons is so good, you might need to wait to grab a table--especially outside. There is always, though, the option of ordering some of those fabulous empanadas to go :) Trust me, I've done it many times! Visit Rekons, you won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Yelp
I'm still a fan, but today I was sorely disappointed by the food that they served. I ordered my favorite - potatoes and 4 cheese. Usually an ooey gooey mess of potato cheesey goodness. And I also ordered 2 empanadas. Everything came out COLD. the outside was warm, but the inside was stone cold. UGH!!! I love this place so much, and hate to think that their standards have dropped. Hopefully they just need to get a new oven. I will still be back for more, but skeptically.

Yelp
After returning to the area after playing basketball, I was wandering around the area at midnight, super hungry. I walked into the restaurant next door, and was told by the proprietress that they were closed. She apologized profusely, but then asked me to follow her next door to see whether Rekons would help me out. Though they were putting stuff away, I chose a carne (shredded beef) and chorizo con queso (sausage and cheese) empanada, both for €4.60. She heated them up for me in the oven and I took them back to my hotel and gobbled them up. Flaky outside, moist and tender inside, and the dough has just the right balance of salt.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is great. Full stop Great inexpensive empanadas and an AMAZING staff. Tip top!
google avatar

Laura C T.

Yelp
An absolute gem. Huge portions and excellent deal. For 11.30 you can get 3 empanadas, a huge salad, a drink, and coffee or tea. The salad itself costs 8€. The staff speaks a but of English and was extreme helpful translating the menu. These guys were do busy and non stop on a Sunday afternoon, we were impressed. Highly recommend stopping by if in the area.
google avatar

Jimmy P.

Yelp
Hip little bistro on a corner serving up killer empanadas for a very reasonable price -- flaky, buttery crust with savory, rich fillings. There's a small booze selection and quite a few selections (such as the tapas plate shown in my photo), but I would stick to the empanadas -- tapas plate was decent but left a lot to be desired. Particular favorites were the chorizo and bacon and goat cheese. Friendly staff, good for tourists with very limited Spanish vocabulary. Been here twice already and plan to stop by a couple more times during my three day tour in Barcelona just for the amazing empanadas. Free wifi and they bring you a bar nuts mix while your wait.
google avatar

Sarit S.

Yelp
Come here you guys! So good and its worth every morsel. A case full of goodness and I am so happy I found this place not to far from where I am staying. I got anout 8 different types of empanadas and dang yo! Get the carne picante so delicious! I wonder if I can smuggle these into the states? Amazing food yummy for this tummy!
google avatar

Noanya S.

Yelp
Great local experience...two people enjoying appetizers, beer, and meal for $21 euros couldn't ask for more. The server spoke enough English to help us read over the menu and the ability to people watch is an added bonus...the potatoes were so yummy and a must try...they are extremely busy and run out of certain empanadas but this place is definitely worth a visit while in Barcelona...I will be back tomorrow
google avatar

Irina C.

Yelp
The best empanadas in Barcelona! This place is super cute and has a great selection of empanadas and desserts. I could literally eat 10 in one sitting. The staff speaks a little English and are very helpful. Don't pass this one up!
google avatar

Eric C.

Yelp
Really tasty chorizo empanada and great priced wine/beer. Would recommend to friend wanting a tasty meal after long day of sightseeing
google avatar

Pat B.

Yelp
Great empanadas!!! We had dinner there last night and loved it!!! Try their mushroom, "hot meat", and sausage empanadas - also, try the local beer!
google avatar

Chris F.

Yelp
Nice, quick spot. Friendly people and a place to sit. Serves beer and wine. The pollo and Jamon & Queso empanadas were delicious (warmed).
google avatar

Linna T.

Yelp
I was excited to eat at this well known empanada place. There was an abundant amount of choices to choose from. Not limited to just empanadas but most of the diners did order empanadas to go and stay.

Eli S.

Yelp
Very nice people and delicious empanadas. Highly recommend for quick and affordable while being delicious. Also spoke English which helped as a tourist!
google avatar

Ritodhi C.

Yelp
Friendly service and phenomenal grub for less than €10 -- it doesn't get much better than that. This casual neighborhood cafe sells Argentinian-inspired tapas, sandwiches, desserts, and drinks. My suggestion is that you dive into as many of their empanadas, a baked pastry stuffed with deliciousness, as your stomach will permit. I tried the Bacon & Goat Cheese and Spicy Meat, both of which hit the spot with their warm flakiness and savory filling. Each empanada is fairly small, so I would do two or three per person.
google avatar

Jiah T.

Yelp
This place doesn't deserve less than 5 stars-- and the salad is as amazing as everyone says, and more. Ridiculously delicious. So were the empanadas. You just cannot beat the combo! Again, it lives up to the hype. Great value for amazing casual food. The only thing that sucked for us is that we were there somewhat late (10pm, not super late for Barcelona) and they were out of many of their empanada options, so we had them bring whatever they had. Didn't disappoint though. We ordered a ham, cheese & potato casserole on top of the combo and it almost made us take a nap on the spot, it was so simple and soooo good. Came straight out of the oven, piping hot, potatoes perfectly cooked and seasoned, and that HAM, for gods sake. THAT HAM!!! We initially tried ordering more food but service gave us a heads up that it was going to be a ton of food, and she was right. Even though I would have loved to try whatever else it was that I wanted to, by the time we were halfway done with the casserole, we were feeling stuffed to the brim. But we couldn't let that ham go to waste so we ended up picking at the rest until it was like half a crumb of potato left and we left the restaurant in good pain. We reminisced about Rekons for the next three days (and still going). Go here for a meal, trust me.
google avatar

Yelp
Best Empanadas in Barcelona. My wife and I visited Barcelona in November 2018 and found Rekons on Yelp.
google avatar

Sharon E.

Yelp
Really great empanadas! I came here to meet up with the fabulous Kat T. who was visiting from LA, on a recommendation from the equally fabulous Robert M. Our criteria for the day: something affordable, and delicious in a place that can accommodate a group of 5 adults and 2 kids. With outdoor seating if possible. And Rekons provided all of the above. Well, the 5 of us (and 2 baby strollers) crammed around a 4-top on the sidewalk terrace, to enjoy a table full of empanadas and salads and patatas bravas. What's recommended: get the salad and 2 empanada plate which comes with a drink and a coffee for just under 11 Euros. It was very filling, and I couldn't even finish my salad (when does that ever happen to me?). Service was friendly and in typical Spanish fashion, very slow - but that was ok since we were just chatting away and enjoying hanging out. There was a constant queue of people waiting for seating or ordering food for take away - so it's definitely a popular place. and judging by the food, I could see why.
google avatar

X-topher B.

Yelp
This is empanaderia is always bumpin'. 15-20 selections of savory empanadas, plus sweet empanadas and other desserts, and tasty-looking salads. This place has got some indoor seating, and plenty of outdoor seating. I got a clara, and a selection of empanadas. The service was great--the woman serving up the empanadas was really patient with my Spanish, even though it was really busy, and she even translated a few of the unknowns into English for me. After I selected what I wanted, they were put into an oven, and brought to a perfectly palatable temperature. The eggplant & cheese, the tuna, the caprese, and the Roquefort with walnuts are all excellent.
google avatar

J C.

Yelp
Came here as per the suggestion of our host. Lovely. Delicious. Super friendly. Affordable. We had the combo with the empanadas and the salad (one smart yelper took a pic of the salad and posted). Get the salad. It was a party in my mouth! Its got greens, roasted zucchini, eggplant, tomatoes, cheese, potatoes, oregano, balsamic glaze, a piece of ham, mine had cottage cheese (maybe) with a slice of pineapple, thin granny smith slices and watermelon. This is not like an ingredient list where there was more of the first and the least amount of the last ingredient. It was superb. The empanadas: delicious! We had the cheese and onion, mushrooms and chorizo. Favorite was the cheese and onion. If you get the great opportunity to visit you will notice that we were kind of boring with our selections because they have real delicious things and more exotic (to me) things on their menu. Bocadillo: we shared half a hot sandwich: Lacon with cheese melted. Heavenly... You could easily share the salad and empanadas and a full sandwich but we played it smart and only got half a sandwich and then had dessert... carrot cake: delicious.. not like I wanted to eat carrot cake there for the rest of my life, but it was solid and good and didnt have too much frosting and wasn't too sweet (its like they read minds) and the cafe solo (espresso) was excellent (I'm running out of good adjectives here...) Eat here....Our check was about 25euros (including tip). The server was so sweet and patient and attentive. Everyone was working: the dude making the divine salads and the servers behind the counter serving, etc. etc. The place is also very attractive and airy as mentioned by another fellow yelper due to high ceilings.
google avatar

Tracy F.

Yelp
The salad + 2 empanadas special is plenty to share, and very delicious! The salad includes a cheese filled zucchini, wild rice salad with tuna on tomato, carrot and sweet potato slices, cubed mozzarella, dried cherries, asparagus, and sprouts on a large bed of lettuce. We chose the ham & cheese and capresse empanadas. Both were savory, flaky, and toasted to perfection. There is a reasonable amount of indoor and outdoor seating Sit first to be served or head straight to the counter for take-away.
google avatar

Crystal G.

Yelp
My partner and I traveled to Spain from California and we loved these empanadas! Especially the chorizo with cheese. In fact, I'd say these are the best empanadas I've ever had. We stopped by once more during our return trip to Barcelona before heading back home... will definitely stop by if we're ever in Barcelona again!
google avatar

Yelp
What can I say about this freaking fantastic place? I came here because of Yelp's reviews and I came on a Wednesday night thinking that it wouldn't be very crowded. Every single table outside and inside was full to the max and there were people waiting for a table. I put down my name for a table outside and after I waited for about 25 minutes the waiter asked me if I would be willing to sit with a couple of guys that were already seated at a table. I was happy to share a table with them, their names are Steve and George. We talked about everything you could possibly talk about for two hours. Finally the bartender told us we had to leave because they were closing the place. I had the most delicious mushroom empanada and a delicious vermouth. The company was wonderful, the waitstaff was excellent, and the ambience was perfect. Come to this place.
google avatar

Maria L.

Yelp
I was craving a salad and came across Rekon. My husband and I shared one of the featured dishes. We had a salad, 3 delicious empanadas, a drink, and coffee for under 12€! The sandwiches looked fantastic. They were huge, but we were too full from splitting our meal to try one.
google avatar

Alex R.

Yelp
LOVED this place! Was visiting Barcelona with my father who is Argentinian and we were looking for a good place to eat some empanadas. Rekons is very casual and it was full of locals - always a good sign! They have an incredible selection of empanadas - we both got the deal where you get 3 and a salad plus a drink. The portions were very generous and the food was really tasty! Great to be able to drink Argentinian beer too :) The staff were super friendly and we had a good laugh with them. Would love to go back here next time I'm in Barcelona!
google avatar

Kathe C.

Yelp
Believe the hype!! Empanadas to die for but the potato, jamón + brie casserole is dare I say - EVEN BETTER. A great alternative to tapas + the perfect spot to have a low key, casual lunch or dinner.
google avatar

Luiz F.

Yelp
It's a nice place, with a good sound track inside, delicious empanadas, there are tables at side walk to enjoy a beer.
google avatar

Alejandro S.

Yelp
Ate here fives times during my trip to Barcelona. The food is pretty amazing. One waitress is a bit aloof and so service can be slow. Free wifi, and you can order at the counter if you want to take the food to go.
google avatar

Art S.

Yelp
Pretty much what everyone else has said - great food and lots of it, all for less than 12 euros. I enjoyed my first introduction to Vermouth and my sweetie and I both highly recommend the patatas bravas.

Jeff K.

Yelp
I left there stuffed. 1st time trying Argentine food and it was amazing and well priced.

Yelp
Great empanadas at an amazing price! The staff are incredibly friendly and always know what to recommend!
