"In a 16th-century former orphanage opposite the Sint Janskerk, this Relais & Châteaux jewel-box bolthole is done up in rich velvets, floral prints, and licks of chrome." - Chris Schalkx

Relais & Châteaux Weeshuis Gouda (Gouda, South Holland) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Yes, that Gouda, birthplace of the world-renowned cheese, and a classic example of the cobblestoned, verdant, walkable town squares for which Europe is justly famous. Weeshuis Gouda’s proprietors took their time renovating this 17th-century orphanage, carefully preserving antique details like stone scrollwork and cheerful, red-shuttered windows. Inside, the period architecture is contrasted with a clean, modern touch, a look that brings to mind the simplicity and efficiency at the core of Dutch hospitality and design. Fresh flowers and floods of light complete the charming picture, calming the mind before your next cathedral tour or canalside stroll." - Tablet Hotels

The hotel is charming, with gorgeous, cozy, comfortable rooms. The staff is great, the location perfect, and cleanliness is impeccable throughout. The only reason I give it a 9 and not a 10 is that the breakfast was somewhat disappointing in that the menu was promising, but the quality of the food was not quite up to it. Otherwise, the room in which it was served was spectacular and it was still an enjoyable moment, just not on par with the otherwise high standards of the establishment.

I had an unforgettable stay at I had an unforgettable stay at Relais & Châteaux Weeshuis Gouda. When I faced a sudden health issue, the staff—and especially Jose Anker at reception—were simply extraordinary. Their kindness, vigilance, and genuine care made me feel completely safe and supported. Weeshuis Gouda is situated at an excellent location. The decoration is warm and colorful. The director is passionate and leads a young team of dedicated staff. Everything was exceptionally well taken care of. Dinner was outstanding. We would be delighted to return.

Beautiful hotel. Room 3 had a little terrace/balcony at the back which was lovely to sit on in the morning sun. The room had a coffee machine and kettle. The shower was really nice and the products provided were very high quality. The bed was super comfortable and we both slept really well. The hotel is in a quieter place of Gouda, but only a short 2 minute walk to the main square if you cut down the side of the cathedral. The complementary syrup waffles on check in was a lovely touch.

No one who is physically challenged or a solo traveller should stay at this hotel. The reception closes at 9 pm with staff then no longer in the building including no security. The internal premises are left in the dark with low visibility. The entry door to be used after 9 pm is very difficult to open. I tried for 15 minutes on my first night of staying. Finally got assistance to open door from a woman walking her dog. She tried opening the door for 5 minutes before being successful. This was definitely a security issue for me and I felt very unsafe. I am mobility challenged so faced stairs to climb. The restaurant was also not open for dinner for me entire stay. I will never stay again at this hotel. I have been frequently visiting Gouda since 1993.

Definitely not worth the price!||On the first evening, there was a wedding on the ground floor. Loud music and voice until late at night. Really not what you are looking for when you book a "Relais et Chateau". The hotel could have informed the customers upfront offering them the possibility to chose another option.||Persistant smel of mouse pee in the room, sqeaking bed, dust bunnies on the floor, no intimacy in the bathroom as this is directly in front of the bed in open space: not the greatest experience, and this was a luxury room! The website indicates a seating area in the luxury rooms, this was not the case in our room. The choice at the breakfast was extremely limited, honestly very far from any standard breakfast buffet in any hotel. In addition, we had to wait 40+ minutes to get the only plate we have ordered from the kitchen for breakfast and, 3 minutes after being served, were told that we had to hurry as the breakfast would close soon. All in all, the experience was really very far from being worth the price! Disappointing...

The building itself is beautifully restored in the heart of Gouda. They offer parking- bear in mind parking is more than 300m away and costs €25 a day. They say hotel parking but it’s not at the hotel. That being said is not an issue by itself if it would be communicated but unfortunately it is not. Guests come (witnessed 2 more guests with the same problem), parked their car on the side of the road if they were lucky or had to block the small road while walking in to reception and asking where the parking is. Just sent an email up front and explain it to your guests,if you already take €25 a day for parking that is at least 5min walk away. Booked a junior suite, very small room. Around 28/29m2. On the website it says they vary from 29-40m2. I guess I was unlucky with the size of the suite. But it’s not really a suite, rather a nice room. Storage in the open bathroom is not existent. No space to put down your laundry bag, that’s poor design. Staff knocking on the door which says „do not disturb“. I find that a total no go… and in general the staff is not very diligent. From check in to waiting staff. They really need proper training. Unfortunately I am used to better service in a Relais & Chateau hotel and therefore would not call this on a RC level. Facilities are beautiful therefore not 2 but 3 stars

Beautiful historic hotel in a picturesque and quiet street of the beautiful town of Gouda. We arrived on a Monday when the restaurant and cafe are closed, and got super early check in. Hotel has a WhatsApp message system for pre check in and were responsive to a special request! Monday and Tuesday is a quiet time to visit this town as many restaurants are closed. Beautiful bike rides all around. As is common in historic buildings in Holland Hotel has lots of steep stairs so if you have mobility issues mention this for your room selection.
