Relais Casamassima, Near Perugia, Umbria, Italy - Explore & Book

"Tinkling bells, chirping cicadas and a swathe of hillside covered in olives and vines - happiness on the outskirts of Perugia. From the bottle of wine on arrival to the organic toiletries from Spello, all is simple, beautiful, and run with great kindness by owner Anna. As well as welcoming overnight guests, Casamassima is a working farm with a little on-site shop selling its very own extra virgin olive oil and wines. Breakfast is a spread of fresh cakes, homemade jams and eggs from the hens, then lunch and dinner feature lovingly home-cooked delights from the garden: stuffed peppers, spinach souffle, fluffy gnocchi. I'm still dreaming about it. Wide brick arches span the renovated stable, rugs lie scattered on sloping brick floors, and there are drinks you can help yourself to, plus cards, chess, music - Anna has thought of everything. The suites, a meticulous mix of antique and contemporary, will enchant you with their pretty stone balconies and romantic bedrooms. Working fireplaces ensure winter is cosy, and summer brings idyllic swimming amongst the lavender trees and finding secret reading spots in the gardens that cascade down the hillside. With Assisi, Perugia, Montone and Gubbio nearby, plus an ancient tower with nesting doves and rambling pastures with sheep and chickens, this is a perfect slice of rural Umbria. Highs A tranquil retreat in the rolling hills of Umbria - Italy’s ‘Green Heart’ - yet just a 10-minute drive from bustling Perugia Anna is a warm and dedicated hostess with meticulous attention to detail and a wealth of knowledge about the local area Deliciously luxurious and seductive suites, all with private living rooms and romantic fireplaces We were blown away by the beautiful food, mostly produced within the grounds - fruits, vegetables, eggs, wine and olive oil; truly some of the best of our trip If you can find a group of friends to share it with, it would make a blissful holiday house for weekly rentals (sleeps up to 12) Lows Although Perugia is only 4km away, you'll really need a car to make the most of the region Lunch and dinner are only available on request, and the owners can't always oblige, but it's well worth an ask With so few rooms you may be obliged to be sociable - a plus for some people The pool is small and unheated, but it's a blissful spot to while away an afternoon" - Ben Reed

Such an amazing place. A little off the beaten path but easy to access Perugia and all of the surrounding medieval towns, the house has all the historical charm you could want (but all of the modern comfort and convenience that you need!). Anna, the owner, and Elizabeth the manager were warm and helpful. They arranged a very fun truffle hunt and wine tasting for us and provided great recommendations on the surrounding areas to visit. 💯 recommend. Will definitely return.

Thank you Anna and Elisabeth for your warm welcome and hospitality! We really felt like we were staying with family. Delicious home cooked breakfast and our special dinner was amazing. We were spoilt with local wine, (Anna’s Merlot is delightful, we look forward to tasting the chardonnay), breads and local meats! The rooms are well appointed with everything you need and are surrounded by a beautiful garden. Next time we would love to make the time to sit by the pool and admire the views.

Casamassima is a paradise. I went with four girlfriends for a long weekend. We arrived late into Perugia, but Anna waited up for us and had a most glorious feast prepared, all washed down with their own homegrown red wine. The rooms are large, comfortable, clean and quiet. The grounds are gorgeous with beautiful views. There is a lovely breakfast every morning with lots of nice chat with host and staff, as well as excellent suggestions for things to do. There are options to have a cookery course on-site, and after tasting Anna's cooking, I'd most certainly opt for this option when we next return.

We had a nice stay at Casamassima, but we think the price level is a bit too high: would expect even higher quality when paying 250e/night.

After a few very hectic days sightseeing in Pisa and Florence, it was a joy to spend time in this lovely tranquil hotel nestled in the hills above Perugia.||Anna and her team are excellent hosts , nothing was too much trouble and they were very attentive at all times. We had breakfast each morning on the terrace surrounded by lemon and orange trees, then a short stroll through the garden to the pool with it's deck overlooking the vines and olive trees .| Sitting on our own private terrace in the evening listening to the crickets and watching the fireflies while enjoying a glass of wine - magical.

This was one of the most relaxing, beautiful places I've ever stayed. It's a 20 euro taxi to Perugia where I attended a conference, but coming home to Relais Casamassima was a whole different world -- wandering the olive groves, picking lemons for tea, warming fires in the stone hearth on chilly evenings...it was absolutely lovely. The owners told wonderful stories, the whole staff was helpful, and you can't beat homemade yogurt and local eggs for breakfast! Wish I could have stayed longer.

Stayed at this beautiful old olive farm for five days in early June. Anna, the owner, made us feel so welcome with her warm hospitality and her delight in sharing the many interests and attributes the rural area offers and seeking to align her visitors’ interests with local availability. In this respect we visited the most impressive Perugino art exhibition in Perugia as well as the astonishing array of frescoes in the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi. Anna was a mine of information, recommending a wide variety of activities and places to visit. The setting for the farm is in very peaceful and luxuriant countryside with an abundance of plants and trees all adding to the sense of calm tranquility. The accommodation provides for every need , very comfortable and spacious, a place to relax and enjoy restorative time at the side of the pool. Meals are a delight-an excellent breakfast with many choices including fruit in season together with home baked cake whilst Anna, who is a wonderful cook, will provide some evening meals introducing us to simple and delicious local cuisine accompanied by some of the wine made from the vines grown by her and her husband. Much of the produce comes from their vegetable garden. This is a quiet area, “off the beaten track”, but within easy reach of the airport at Perugia and an excellent place to stay to explore the ancient hill top cities and towns in this region or the surrounding countryside. I came here with my daughter and her partner and we wholeheartedly recommend and thank Anna and her staff for their kindness and sensitivity in making this such a welcome and refreshing holiday break- many thanks.

I spent 9 days at this charming rural escape with a friend. Anna the owner and her staff were very welcoming, friendly and gave helpful suggestions and reliable recommendations about the local area. The breakfast and evening meals were delicious as was the wine from their oiwn vineyar. Our twin room was very comfortable. There is a beautiful wild garden full of birds and butterfies a sun terrace overlooking the valley towards Perugia and walks nearby. I recommend it for a peaceful getaway and base for exploring providing you have a car.
