"Whilst you've probably heard of Portofino and Santa Margherita (coastal playgrounds to the glitterati), you might not be so familiar with Liguria's hinterland. So let us fill you in. A peaceful, mountainous area layered with larch forests, olive groves, vertiginous footpaths and old stone houses, it's a far cry from the bright lights of the Italian Riviera, yet it's an easy drive from beaches for relaxed day trips.Borgomaro is the main village in the area's Maro valley - population 884 at the last count. Pastel houses line the river, there's a lovely 17th-century church, and children play barefoot in the square; it's an enchanting slice of rural Italy. Relais del Maro has a plum position in the centre of everything, and is run with big smiles by owner Elena and her mother. An albergo diffuso, it's spread over 3 ancient buildings which were once home to their ancestors and premises for a butcher, barber and baker. Now beautifully restored, they house 14 immaculate bedrooms, a breakfast room and a library-lounge. There's also a flower-filled garden overlooking the village, with a tranquil pool and a bubbling Jacuzzi. If your idea of luxury includes lazy siestas, relaxed walks and time to read, this place will top your wishlist. This is the best Italian hotel I have ever stayed in. I have visited three times and no doubt will be going back again.|The staff are superb and ever helpful, booking taxis and restaurants on request.|They do look after you like you are a member of the family.|The rooms are excellent and the way they use village houses as part of the hotel to help boost the local economy is a great idea.|The village itself is pretty and off the beaten track, so not many tourists. You'll definitely get a very authentic Italian experience.

Sept 24 The most beautiful place with the best hospitality. Everything about Relais del Maro is special and the team are wonderful. They have exceptional knowledge about food and the region too. Great breakfast and lunches plus a lovely afternoon tea each day. Gorgeous and comfortable room. The most wonderful garden and pool. Overall superb. Thank you for a truly memorable stay, we will return.

Without exaggeration this is one of the best hotels I’ve ever been. The rooms are clean and spacious, the service is superb and super friendly, and the breakfast is amazing. Everything, from the tiniest details, is thought through. On top of that, the hotel lies in a beautiful village with a great restaurant right across the street, tipped by the hotel staff. There is absolutely nothing I can think off that should have been better. I loved it here!!

This boutique hotel is a real gem! The decor is stylish and elegant the staff are friendly and attentive (nothing is too much trouble) the breakfasts and lunches are delicious (fresh fruits cheeses and local produce) Elena and her staff were really helpful to our group of friends on a Pilates holiday providing a venue for our classes and suggesting many other activities in the area. I cannot recommend them highly enough

Superb location in the forested hills 10km or so from the stunningly beautiful Italian Riviera. The Staff at this gorgeous hotel are quite easily the most Professional and welcoming team I've ever come across.|There's plenty of lovely countryside to explore with rivers to swim in and olive groves in abundance. The coast is a 20min bus ride away.

Relais Del Maro exceeded our expectations. It was elegant, well run and convenient. The staff is top notch and completely fluent in English. The food is excellent. The village is charming. Comfortable bed with quality linens. We plan to return.
