Walking in, I thought I had stepped back in time by about 45 years. The carpet, the art, it felt like something out of the 1980's. And most of the clientele looked like they were right at home, it was a decidedly more mature crowd, especially at the bar.
Our server seemed to be a little shy and nervous. Several times, I couldn't even understand what he was saying. Anyway, we started with the Brussel sprout halves, just a great appetizer. They're tossed with their own seasoning and a little parm. I would have had no trouble taking the whole thing down.
The turkey Reuben was a good sandwich, maybe a little more turkey would have been good though. Also it came out when we were still finishing the appetizer, so the timing was definitely off. But the Reuben had some slaw, Swiss cheese, and comeback sauce and with the toasted bread, it was a fine sammich. I got the side salad, really good as well. They did come together on a round metal plate, which I thought I would be more likely to see at a BBQ joint.
We were pretty much done at that point so we declined dessert...at first. The waiter asked if it would be separate checks or one. Since it was just past my birthday, my friend offered to treat. Then the waiter informed us that because it was my birthday, we got free mini donuts.
And that's about the time the angels started singing, I felt God's urging to indulge. And sure enough out comes a brown paper bag, with the grease stains showing through the bottom. The sugar was at the bottom, the hot donuts had been tossed in. Raspberry sauce and chocolate sauce. Wow. Amazing! Give me those over birthday cake any day of the week.
It wasn't my greatest dining experience in Raleigh, but it was certainly a solid one.
