I recommend Renato al Ghetto for those who keep kosher or halal, and anyone else exploring the Jewish quarter of Rome.
I was curious to explore (and taste) the enduring traditions of this culturally and religiously unique Italian Jewish community. (I suggest downloading an audio tour to learn the community's history of struggle and resilience.)
I also keep halal, so was really excited to eat at Renato after a week of foregoing meat in Rome.
There are a handful of kosher restaurants in the Jewish quarter- a couple with lines out the door likely due to mention in guidebooks. I'm glad I skipped those and went to Renato instead-- no line, and open during the afternoon siesta.
The famed carciofi alla giudea, or Jewish artichoke, was really tasty. Perfectly deep fried, crispy, and salty- it was one of the tastiest and most unusual items I ate during my trip.
The carbonara with beef bacon was a treat, in that it's hard to find a kosher/halal carbonara (pork being a key ingredient). The dish was a bit heavy for my taste, and the pasta a little al dente, but I still enjoyed trying it.
The bread basket was a welcome tablemate, though as with most restaurants in Rome, it left me wishing it were warmer and accompanied by olive oil.
The service was on point-- attentive, helpful, English friendly. The space was bright, and modern.
I hope to return to Rome, and when I do, I plan to come back for an artichoke and carne fix!
