How to Have the Best Day Ever in Rome

"Known for fried artichokes and zucchini flowers, this restaurant embodies Jewish-Roman tradition. The area also hosts a lively scene of kosher restaurants and bakeries." - Dan Q. Dao

Perfect service. Nice place. Delocious food. Good prices. Ask about fish in salt. Did it. And was very , very good.

Google
Wonderful dinner with the family. Nice variety of options on the menu. The fried artichokes were crispy and flavorful. We really enjoyed the fettuccine with truffle, mushrooms, and beef. We ordered the mixed grill platter for 2 and it could easily have fed the 4 of us. Lamb, sausage, chicken, beef and fried potatoes all cooked wonderfully. Desert with the lemon cherry tart was a great way to end the meal. Great service and never felt rushed. Highly recommend.

Google
Wonderful place for a lunch in the Jewish Ghetto area of Rome. Enjoyed fettuccine with ragu, fried artichoke, and humus with falafel. Delicious!

Google
Just ordered take away meatballs & they were delicious. The tomato sauce was to perfection. The meatballs were well cooked & soft - exactly how they should be. They came without rice … but maybe I was supposed to order that? It wasn’t needed though the meatballs were definitely enough for a meal. Will come back again

Google
Stumbled upon this place by accident and were pleasantly surprised. Israeli white house wine was very good. Atmosphere & service - outstanding. We liked this place so much that we came back twice during our trip. For people who like salty fishy foods. Favorites on the menu: artichokes, anchovies, salmon tartar, chicken cacciatore.

Google
A fellow Italian friend recommended this place and it did not disappoint. We were able to get a last minute dinner reservation and sat outside. Staff seems to be family, i couldn’t ask since there was a language barrier, but that did not matter. They went above and beyond to serve us and make us feel welcomed. Food was incredible, wine was great. I would recommend Renato Al Ghetto to friends and family ☺️

Google
45mn to get the appetizers after asking twice for our order that apparently have not been registered. Pasta al Renato were not good and the few and small pieces of meet were full of fat. Smallest meat skewers I ever saw and as well full of fat. None of our orders were tasty. The online menu is not the same as the one in the restaurant.

Yelp
I exclusively tried the Roman-Jewish speciaties. The fried foods (Fritto della Tradizione) was delicious and crisply fried. The antipasto Giudaico Romanesco was very good too. I was not disappointed. These appetizers are generous portions for appetizers, so you can easily combine too of them for a nice satisfying dinner. It appears the owner is also handling the guests and tables. The ambiance was pleasant, especially sitting on the promenade. The surrounding atmosphere is unique and different then elsewhere.

Yelp
Renato al Ghetto was a wonderful break from typical Italian foods. They specialize in Roman-Jewish food so I would definitely recommend trying those specialties. Our absolute favorites were the Jewish Artichokes (Carciofo alla Giudia). We liked it so much that we ordered extra! It's super crispy and flavorful. I thought the other dishes were all good too, but the Agnolotti all'arrabbiata was the second stand out. The agnolotti are stuffed with meat and the sauce really complements them. My mom thought the meat was too pink so if you have any picky family members beware! I would definitely come back next time I'm in the Jewish Ghetto.

Yelp
I'm not sure whether my stomach ache is from the vegetable pasta I had at Renato Al Ghetto or a jet lag side effect. Either way, I won't be returning. I didn't like the service worker making a hard push for a tip after we got the bill or the waiter dismissing our calls for pita instead of focaccia. The food itself was mediocre. There are other good restaurants in the area. Choose one of them.

Yelp
This was the worst dinner we had in our 2 weeks in Italy. We aren't kosher, but we decided to try something different. The meatballs were all right, but the chicken Saltimbocca was terrible. Overly salty with a gummy sauce and very dry. I understand what kosher is, but the salted beef they used just doesn't work as a sub for prosciutto. Better off trying a totally different dish. We were sorry we chose this place with so many great restaurants in Rome.

Yelp
Our family had just left the cat sanctuary over at Largo Argentina and we were checking out the Jewish Ghetto and found this restaurant for lunch. It was on the main street with all the others like it but this one stood out to us so we tried it. The interior is very beautiful with wooden semi circular beams inside and lots of old brick walls, We were seated quickly and had great service with good food here. I had a trio of traditional Roman appetizers, my wife had the Sea Bass that was encrusted with pistachios and my son had the smoked salmon appetizer. The Sea Bass was by far the favorite. Very delicate fish and a great topping. Renato al Ghetto is a great place to try when in the area.

Yelp
This was our favorite meal in the Jewish Quarter. Started with bread and a couple of appetizers. The Carciofo alla Giudia, the Jerusalem artichoke, was fried perfectly. So delicious. We also had the Giudia Artichaut à la façon juivlos e Fritto della Tradizione. This was a traditional fried food with a fried Giudia (Jerusalem) artichoke with a cod fillet and courgette flower stuffed with cod. So unique and so tasty. For our first course, Primi, we had the Paccheri con pomodori datterini, spigola e polvere di bottarga. The paccheri was mixed with datterini tomatoes, sea bass and bottarga powder. Paccheri is a large tube pasta. Such a great pasta dish. For our second course, Secondi, we had the Spigola in crosta di pistacchio. The sea bass in the pistachio crust served with cicoria ripassata, sautéed chicory, was amazing. So hard not to come back the next day and order the same meal. Service was great. Nice to be able to sit outside shaded by an umbrella and just enjoy a relaxing late lunch with family.

Yelp
The Jewish artichokes are so good!!! The staff is friendly and the food was exceptional. I had the land while the wifey had the chick schnitzel. Served up some wine and it was well worth it. Came her on a separate day and we both had pasta. All real good

Yelp
We stayed near the Vatican and the food was mostly meh. A group of us took the Jewish Ghetto tour and that was worth the time+money. At the end of the tour, our excellent guide (Micaela Pavoncello) suggested we eat here, at Renato. Great choice. We had fun with the owner and staff and tried a host of foods and beverages -- all kosher. The food was great. It was a very hot day, however, and faded fast. But, I would definitely eat here again. Try the gnocchi. -- workingman's gourmand

Yelp
We stumbled upon Renato while exploring the Jewish quarters of Rome. While there were a bunch of similar restaurants within the vicinity with lines out the door, Renato didn't have one. We were instantly seated for lunch. I'm glad we chose Renato to have lunch as it was my first time having Roman Jewish food was it was delicious. I ordered the Jewish fried artichokes and meatballs with polenta. Both dishes were great. The artichoke was perfectly fried and crispy. It was not oily or greasy. I never even knew artichokes could taste so good! I do wish there were more Italian restaurants in the US that have the same dish. It did take at least 30 minutes (if not longer) for the meatball dish to come out once we were done eating the artichokes. But once it did, I really enjoyed the dish. The meatballs and polenta were also very good. The meatballs were perfect, bursting with flavor. The polenta was also seasoned well. If ever in Rome again, I would love to come back again to try other typical Roman Jewish dishes.

Yelp
I recommend Renato al Ghetto for those who keep kosher or halal, and anyone else exploring the Jewish quarter of Rome. I was curious to explore (and taste) the enduring traditions of this culturally and religiously unique Italian Jewish community. (I suggest downloading an audio tour to learn the community's history of struggle and resilience.) I also keep halal, so was really excited to eat at Renato after a week of foregoing meat in Rome. There are a handful of kosher restaurants in the Jewish quarter- a couple with lines out the door likely due to mention in guidebooks. I'm glad I skipped those and went to Renato instead-- no line, and open during the afternoon siesta. The famed carciofi alla giudea, or Jewish artichoke, was really tasty. Perfectly deep fried, crispy, and salty- it was one of the tastiest and most unusual items I ate during my trip. The carbonara with beef bacon was a treat, in that it's hard to find a kosher/halal carbonara (pork being a key ingredient). The dish was a bit heavy for my taste, and the pasta a little al dente, but I still enjoyed trying it. The bread basket was a welcome tablemate, though as with most restaurants in Rome, it left me wishing it were warmer and accompanied by olive oil. The service was on point-- attentive, helpful, English friendly. The space was bright, and modern. I hope to return to Rome, and when I do, I plan to come back for an artichoke and carne fix!

Yelp
I arranged for Renato's to do a kiddish (celebratory light meal) after my son's wedding at The Great Synagogue of Rome. All negotiations were through email (aided by google translate), so I wasn't really that sure what we'd get. It was SO MUCH NICER than what I expected. Just fantastic! Great attentive staff, very good food (and a lot of it), set out beautifully. I couldn't have asked for better. The restaurant treated our event and all of us like we were special and the whole event was wonderful. Kudos to Renato and his entire staff!

Yelp
This is for price fixed, prepaid Friday night. I don't like to give bad reviews, so I'll say this place is way better than the other options. 5 real courses. An actual fish course, with a real piece of fish (you'll understand). Didn't feel like they were nickel and diming me. They were a little wonky on confirming my reservation, but no problems once I got to restaurant. They even substituted because someone in my party was allergic to pine nuts, and gave an alternate dessert. I don't know if they do Saturday, but next time in Rome I'd do both meals here.

Yelp
I got the pasta carbonara and the artichoke. The artichoke was ok. The pasta carbonara was hands down the absolute worst I've had in my life - and considering how much I love this pasta, this is quite the statement. Stay away from this place. With so many great restaurants right around it, it's amazing how they are still in business

Yelp
Best pasta with anchovies in the world! The place is nice and the staff friendly. Highly highly recommended
