Women Who Travel Podcast: How Other Cultures Care for Their Dead—And What We Can Learn From Them

"What I had read beforehand was that William Butler Yeats had done seances there to try to contact the spirit that allegedly haunted Renvyle House. And he felt he'd made success. He felt he'd contacted him, and I believe found that the man had committed suicide or something like that. And then allegedly the accounts were that after Yeats died, he haunted the Inn as well. So when I booked the reservation for the hotel, I asked for the haunted room. So the first night we were there, my husband decided he was gonna set up his camera because even though he's a skeptic, he wanted proof."

Renvyle House Hotel is a hidden gem in the heart of Connemara. The setting is stunning — right on the Atlantic coast, with incredible views, gorgeous walks and a real sense of tranquility. The sunsets were beautiful. ||The hotel itself is full of character, with a cozy, old-world charm that instantly makes you feel at home. Our room was comfortable with a window seat looking out at the gardens. The staff were outstanding — warm, attentive, and genuinely friendly.||Meals were a real highlight. Fresh, local ingredients - every dish was memorable, especially the seafood and house-baked breads.||Renvyle House Hotel is a fabulous base for Connemara, and a very special haven to return to in the evenings. We swam in nearby Renvyle Strand every morning. Visited Kylemore Abbey. Climbed Diamond Hill. Visited a lovely book shop/coffee spot called Book At One in Letterfrack, and enjoyed so much more during our stay at Renvyle. ||We were so lucky with a week of glorious sun, but whether rain or shine, there’s something peaceful and grounding about this place.||Highly recommended for anyone looking to unwind and soak in the beauty of the west of Ireland. We can’t wait to come back.

Everything about this hotel and resort is classy, efficient, gracious, and professional. I was there as part of a writers’ workshop. Every need was not only dealt with immediately and with courtesy and swiftness, but often anticipated. The food is delicious and breakfasts are especially enjoyable. The rooms are comfortable. The duvet was perfect. A walk in shower would have made it even more desirable. The location and grounds are beautiful. I am looking forward to returning.

Indeed. The welcoming sign says it all. Renvyle is the furthest west place you can stay in all of Europe, located on the "Wild Alantic Way", and your trek there is rewarded with everything a fine resort can offer. However, it's the warm, welcoming staff with their impeccable service that truly stands out. Airline delays made me a day late, but Mgr. Anne Marie encouraged me to relax and let her figure out my travel details. I was left to enjoy the beautiful walks, wonderful massage and fine dining that never disappointed. From nature to nurture, I highly recommend this gem of an historic seaside resort.

Renvyle House is an amazing experience. The house is quaint on the inside with its wooden interior and turf fires. The rooms were of a very high standard and very comfortable. The service was fantastic. A very special call out to the hotel manager Anne Marie and the maître d'hôtel Martin. They made us feel very welcome as did all the staff. The dinner was superb as was the breakfast. We will definitely be back.

This is one of the finest hospitality experiences you will ever have. The attention to detail is flawless and staff are always keen to go the eye mile to make guests welcome. The food is as always exquisite and the recent refurbishment has enhanced what was already a fabulous experience. The prices have remained good value despite increases and compare very favourably with elsewhere. The extras like a play, a free sherry, the pool and jacuzzi all add up to a wonderful escape.

A very unique experience. The manager Ann Marie is so friendly making every guest feel valued. Best management ever. I would give her 7 stars. Food fabulous. Breakfast fresh berries etc. no tinned food. Unbeatable experience for relaxation. Dog friendly too! 👏🐕🥂🫶

Stunning views, a gorgeous garden, and the best hospitality I've experienced anywhere in the world. The staff is friendly but not overbearing, and was happy to accommodate requests from my need for feather-free pillows to suggestions on where to shop for woolens. ||The food is excellent. Whoever is cooking the eggs back in the kitchen really knows what they are doing--they were perfectly softboiled, fried, and scrambled throughout the course of my stay. I had dinner in the dining room twice--exceptional service and food both times, from prawn to rack of lamb. ||Over our week there, we enjoyed harp music in the lounge and Irish music in the pub, even a one-woman play one night. in the evenings, the air was redolent with the unfamiliar scent of peat from the hearth.||Gorgeous views of the ocean and sunrise from my room, and I enjoyed walking along the rocky beaches and in the meadow. It's hard to imagine a more pleasant and peaceful stay and was a lovely refuge from the world for a spell.

This was a last minute booking on my part, but so glad I made the decision to stay. From old school hospitality to a beautiful setting, this hidden gem is a great place to stay close to Diamond Hill and Kylemore Abby. Staff and management a credit. Have already recommended to several people and will be back next time I'm in Connemara

Yelp
On the way in to this hotel there's a sign that says something along the lines of 'you are now entering a stress free' zone. So true. This is one of the most chill places I've ever had the privilege of staying. The rooms are small but incredibly comfortable despite the dodgy plumbing. We booked in for three nights on a bed, breakfast and dinner package with 3 other couples on the bank holiday weekend in June. We had a blast. The food is magnificent. The breakfast alone sets the tome for the day and dinner is a delight. Nothing fancy. Just good wholesome food, beautifully presented and with well drilled and attentive staff. Relax at any time during the day in several day rooms with coffee or booze more or less on tap. Live music at night in the bar after dinner leading to a sing song ranging from Irish ballads to ABBA ensure a relaxing, no hassle weekend. During the day, there is so much to see and do in the beautiful Connemara countryside within easy striking distance of the hotel. Must see tourist destinations such as Kylemore Abbey and chic food trucks such as The Misunderstood Heron in nearby Letterfrack have to be experienced. Experience also the grounds in the immediate vicinity for a bracing walk in the afternoon or even a dip in the sea right next to the hotel. For the less adventurous, the hotel, has a heated outdoor swimming pool as well. Given that it was an all-in package it was incredibly good value in my opinion. Highly recommended. Will definitely return. It's a minimum 4.5 hour drive from Dublin so need at least 3 nights to get the full chillax experience.

Yelp
Location is amazing. Pub is excellent. Rooms are small and tired. The suites in the back are recommended. Sometimes dinner is a cattle call type experience, but the food was always good. Not many hotel choices here, this is it. For the money, we find better value doing a VRBO.

Yelp
Gorgeous, historical hotel. Staff is absolutely amazing. Restaurant, bar, front desk, everyone was kind and helpful. Owners on site. Location is simply breathtaking. Surrounding area and drive in was beyond spectacular.

Yelp
(Food only review) Overall Value: This was by far the best food we had in Ireland, and honestly some of the best meals we've ever had, period. The breakfast is phenomenal, and dinner - in both the restaurant and the pub - were both on another level. We are super frugal, and the meals were splurges, but absolutely worth it. Any fish dish here is going to be amazing - it's all local. We didn't like our room at the hotel (kinda dingy) but wow, the food absolutely made up for it. The food: We stayed at the hotel for 2 nights, and got two breakfasts, one dinner at the pub, and one dinner at the restaurant. The restaurant meals are also available at the pub, but the pub-only food is a little cheaper, so we opted to do that one of the nights. Breakfast: -included with the cost of a room. Really nice buffet spread of fruit, breads, cheeses, yogurt, etc., plus a menu that you can also pick from like scrambled eggs, eggs prepared other ways, full Irish breakfast, vegetarian breakfast, various fish options, etc. They let us order 2 meals per person at no additional cost, which was amazing! Sorry, we have no shame. Everything is worth it - we got scrambled eggs, Irish Breakfast, and Fish Hollandaise. The star of the show is their brown bread. I almost didn't bother to try it, because I thought it would be bland (I'm not a fan of soda bread) - but it may just be the best bread I have ever eaten. We had this bread at every meal, and could not eat enough. The pub: We had fish & chips (€17.50) and Irish Goat Cheese Praline Wild Leaf Salad (€12.50) for dinner, as well as a dessert (I'm blanking on the name of the dessert because it was unusual and unfortunately I failed to take a picture of the menu, which changes daily). All very high quality. We were initially a little disappointed with the salad because we got it to get some veggies and it turned out to be mostly cheese. But then we tried the cheese and had no regrets - best cheese we had in Ireland, and just melted in your mouth. Excellent coating on the fish n'chips and generous portions. Dessert was also fantastic. Dinner: We ordered off the prefix menu - we got crab cakes and mussels for appetizers, Connemara lamb and broiled fish for mains, and two desserts (ugh, wish I took a picture of the menu so I could remember exactly what they were. They were unique and delicious!) The dinner at the restaurant is quite pricey, but absolutely worth it - every dish is so well cooked and every component so well put together. It really was one of the best experiences of our trip. Space and Pace: The pub is a bit sprawling, with both indoor and outdoor space. The restaurant for dinner and breakfast is a large space, and the first floor of the hotel and the surrounding area is just beautiful in general (unlike our hotel room). Service: The waitstaff in the restaurant for dinner and at breakfast were all amazing - great recommendations, really friendly, and excellent service. The bartender at the pub was a little short with us and seemed kind of annoyed at having to wait on us, although they were extremely busy at the time, so we let it slide. Whatever, the food made up for it.

Yelp
Stumbled across this hotel - last minute. The serving staff couldn't get our order right on multiple tries across two meals, several had difficulty with english; however, the meals were good. The hotel is beautifully situated on the western Atlantic shores and does have a nice view. I believe the hotel could use some updating a bit and feels more like a rustic, eclectic lodge. The receptionists were very accommodating and helpful though.

Yelp
Renvyle House is amazing! We stayed there recently for a wedding. Everything was perfect and we look forward to returning one day. The location is absolutely stunning - and Renvyle House is like no other place we've stayed. It's a beautiful inn, beautiful rooms, beautiful views, beautiful gardens, excellent restaurant, beautiful sitting areas - and so much more!
