Reserva Nacional Coyhaique

For a park so close to the city it's very good, and it's well worth arriving before 10am so you can climb the mountain, the views were stunning although it was rather a tough climb and took me about 6 hours there and back. I didn't see any humans for the whole 6 hours and i had the whole place to myself. If you climb the actual peak which is just off the trail (which circles the peak), it's better to ascend and descend from the west, as the east is very steep

It was a cool cloudy afternoon. I only passed four people in for hours. Such a peaceful, beautiful place to be alone with your thoughts.

Easy 8km round trip hike to the Laguna Verde through deciduous pine forest and meadows. Path is very even, well maintained, easy to follow and has a steady mild grade except for a short climb near the viewpoint and so is suitable for all ages. Witches Hut was closed when we visited. Lake itself is very pretty and there are picnic tables in small huts and clean bathrooms. The Mirador has a couple of benches to relax and stare at the lake. There is a lot of maintenance work being done in the park, so the park drive was closed to us, but we did see buses using part of it. Keep your eyes and ears open to spot the local flora and fauna. Online reservations were required, but you pay by card only at the entrance. The drive from 240 is a few kms up a very steep, very rutted road.

We did the large loop hike from the entrance up to the top, and it was a great hike! The ranger station said this is about 14 kms, but our tracjer placed it closer to 17 kms, so plan for a,big, long steep hike over the whole day. It was uncomfortably windy at the top, but the views and landscape was spectacular and worth it!

Perfect place for an easy walk. animals are hard to spot so if I go again I would take only wide angle lenses and leave all tele lenses behind. depending on the weather the light is very tricky but its usually dark in some places. but they are good for dramatic photos. consider that it rains a lot so take something to protect you and your equipment.

Great walk to do on a short day trip from Coyhaique. Worth getting a cheap taxi to the start, as the road from town is not so safe to walk due to traffic. Two options for hiking - the lower route should take about 4 hours. Leave early if attempting the high trail, which goes to about 1200m.
