On the Grid : Reservoir Distillery

"You won’t find a more expertly crafted whiskey in Richmond than you will at Reservoir Distillery. Their philosophy? Age the finest ingredients in small barrels, then let the magic happen. By changing up the surface area of the wood the volume of the liquor, they’re able to age their wheat, rye, and bourbon whiskeys at faster rates--but with no compromise to quality. You can grab a taste, a craft cocktail, or a bottle at the distillery store, and while they don’t currently offer formal tours, they’re happy to walk visitors through the process and answer questions." - The Frontier Project

A must stop if in Richmond. Definitely doing a lot right with their whiskeys and looking forward to sipping some longer age statements as they progress. Tasting room is very good and staff is knowledgeable and enthusiastic. While I only had a short time to spend there; it was well worth the stop. Well above average whiskeys with Richmond character. Next trip is going to be a HazMat visit and some Ubers 😁

Great whiskey. Very pricey. Didn't buy. I didn't appreciate that there are so many tastings available for bottles that aren't available for purchase. I felt like the mediocre stuff was for sale. The good stuff was only available for expensive tastings. Some tastings are $19 for a half ounce. Staff was attentive and friendly.

10/20/24 Stopped in for a tasting while visiting from Charlotte. 100% Wheat, Corn and Rye flight. Hunter and Scott bourbon and Whiskey. Dara was super friendly, smart, beautiful and so so informative and the tasting was exactly what I needed. Came back a year later 6/20/25 , no Dara, customer service was more utilitarian than special. Bourbon good, cocktails good but not inspired to bottle a bottle. I always say it’s the experience that makes you want to buy. Our experience the second time was lack luster. Spent $50 plus for a simple flight and two drinks. May not be back. Too many “great experience” places to try.

When in Richmond you drink Richmond hazmat! Checked out Reservoir Distillery and got to try their Hazmat Wheat, Hazmat Bourbon, and Hazmat Rye they had on offer. Hazmat Wheat - 141.8 proof, lots of licorice, vanilla, slight creme brûlée and grain on the nose, palate had some brown sugar notes and a very nice finish. Hazmat Bourbon - 142 proof, this was a blend of their 10 year 100% corn and 5 year 100% wheat and it was incredible. Caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, some toffee, and sweet oak. Palate just about matched it with some additional toffee notes to it. I love this and I wish they had some left to purchase. Hazmat Rye - 144.2 proof normally I’m not a rye guy but this was nice, heavy baking spices, burnt brown sugar, earthy notes to the end with some rye spice, the palate was about the same but the finish left a lingering vanilla note that was really nice. I really suggest checking this place out if you get a chance to go!! Also shout out to our bartender Tyla they were absolutely incredible and did an awesome job taking care of us!

Google
I know I'm giving out way too many of these five star reviews here lately. This distillery is great if you like 'traditional' aged whiskeys such as wheat based, bourbon and rye. They have variations of each with different barrell aging, strengths, etc. They do a great choice of sample flights and cocktails so you definitely want to stop by here if you like these type liquors. Also be aware there's no food here but they do have a great little area to relax and have your cocktail.

Google
Cool spot. Lots of different choices, cocktails, flights etc... No food but there was a food truck outside. Not sure how often they are there. The "Holland" line whiskeys were smoother imo than the straight stick wheat, corn and rye. Good atmosphere and very knowledgeable staff. Made for a fun afternoon.

Hit this place with some friends while in town. We really enjoyed the founding flight. They also have cocktails available and a daily special. It is worth the time to check it out when in the neighborhood.

Visited in November, cool hole in wall distillery. Enjoyed their tasting and bourbon and would be back if ever in Richmond again

Yelp
Small and understated relaxing environment. Bartender very lovely and knowledgeable about all the whisky's in-house. Tried a whisky flight that was nice to try. The Blade Rummer was my favorite!

Yelp
Love Reservoir spirits and their tasting room. The tasting room has a large bar with ~7 seats and two community tables. You can see into the distillery from a couple of large windows. They offer both cocktails and flights Their founders series Wheat, Bourbon and Rye are single grain (100% wheat, 100% corn, 100% Rye respectively) perfect for sipping. Hunter Scott is for mixing and then they have their speciality Hollands series They have the standard versions of Manhattan and Old Fashions, as well as a rotation of seasonal specials Everyone who works their is super friendly and will take the time to talk about their spirits - Mike is our favorite!

Yelp
If you are a bourbon fan this place is awesome. If you are a Virginia bourbon fan this place is a must. A nice selection of bourbon for tasting and some really nice and creative cocktails to try. This has become my go to for making an old fashioned.

Yelp
Service was friendly. Tyla was great to talk with. We had 2 founders flights and one Hunter & Scott pour. Would definitely go back when in the area!

Yelp
I decided to swing by here yesterday before heading to my hotel and I'm glad I did. The spirits and drinks here were great, as was the service. I recommend getting an Old Fashioned and doing a tasting of their whiskies. The inside is spacious and very nice. Dare was the bartender and she was awesome.

Yelp
Skip the brewers and run to Reservoir Distillery. In a neighborhood with 10+ breweries, two cideries and a meadery, Reservoir stands as the only distillery. Here's why you should go: 1) Spirits: They distill small-batch bourbon, whiskey and rye and it's mighty fine. There's a small bar inside where you can do $15 tastings. We left with a large bottle of their whiskey for $80. 2) Space: Located inside a 100+ year old warehouse that was once a Canada Dry and Schweppes facility, a small tasting room is in the front with production in the back. They offer free tours by their head distiller. 3) Neighborhood: Scott's Addition is an industrial neighborhood now with top restaurants and bars. Murals, including one on Reservoir's building, color the entire area.

Yelp
I've tried most of the breweries in Richmond, so on a day trip, I went a little different direction. I was the only customer in the bar on an early Sunday afternoon, and the bartender was really cool, we chatted about a bunch of topics. I had a very nice tasting sampler of three whiskeys, and the Summit cocktail tasted refreshing and well balanced.

Yelp
Great tastings here. I didn't know I was a fan until I went here. Very friendly staff. Must stop in if whiskey/bourbon lover for a flight.

Yelp
Really cool spot, a novelty if you love the stuff. Go with the bartender recommendations for flights and sampling's to find what you like best. Food truck on site almost every week, and they can make you cocktails if you don't enjoy neat.

Yelp
Such a cute little spot! If you like bourbon, this was an awesome bourbon whiskey spot. It was my 38th birthday weekend so my husband figured we would check it out before dinner with the kids. I have only started living bourbon the last 3 years or so. Well, ever since my husband and I went to Louisville Kentucky to visit one of my girlfriends and did a bourbon trail tour... I've fallen in love with Bourbon. The tastings were very affordable. Three tastings for $10-$12 per person.... we did try a speciality one the Holland's ghost... super smooth, that was our favorite... supposedly they created that to mimic pappy van winkle. I've never had that before... but the Holland's Ghost was legit so I can imagine how good Pappy would be. Do make sure you eat something before you do bourbon whiskey tastings... it hit me super fast! Definitely strong! My husband ended up getting the Hardywood mashup since it was made from gingerbread stout barrels. It is a small little spot but it had a good amount of tables. No kid games or anything... so if you bring your kids be prepared! The bartender can also make a few cocktails with the bourbon.... we didn't do that since we were heading to dinner, but I think it would be a cute spot to hit up before dinner next time for a cocktail!

Yelp
Great atmosphere! Good music and fun vibe. Sadly we didn't love the spirits. Tried a flight of 3. Wheat whiskey, bourbon and rye. We didn't love any of them. Prefer McClintock (MD) and Sazerac. Would come back for a cocktail since it's a fun place.

Yelp
This place is fine. I can't speak to all of the choices but we found the ghost flight to be fairly rough and raw. Not smooth at all. Pretty much the definition of fire water. The bartender didn't seem very knowledgeable and described alcohol based on other brands (which I haven't tried so can't compare). The menu didn't describe any of their choices. It's a fine place. But I didn't buy anything after the tasting and wouldn't recommend.

Yelp
Getting frisky with some whiskey! Reservoir is not for the faint at heart! This 90-100 proof whiskey will knock your socks off. They off 1, 3, or 4 samples of their whiskies. I've tried a flight and let's just say it was a wild ride. Many of the drinks are smooth, but they are also very voluptuous and strong. The ginger & whiskey is a go to if you are an amateur. Get the mixed drink and calm your nerves. It's a mixed of ginger ale and 90 proof whiskey. The whiskey-tender is friendly and carefree. He is definitely the life of the party in this cozy little space. I wouldn't recommend large groups mid-day the space is pretty tight. They have 3 communal spaces but the space is very limited. Maybe groups of 5-7.. If you're looking for a cute mid-day date try them out. If you are looking for an outing with friends try them out.

Yelp
Love the updated tap room with more flights and sampling options. They have done a great job of rotating in great food trucks. Bartenders are extremely knowledgeable and friendly.

Yelp
Honestly this business is a hot mess. A read a local magazine article wrote about their newest release of a cognac inspired bourbon produced in collaboration with a French distillery. No date was given in the article for the release but it sounded right up my husband's alley for a Christmas present. I called three days ago and talked to one of the owners and inquired about the release date and was told Saturday the 18th. When I showed up, and waited 20 minutes for the bartender to serve drinks, I was told they weren't releasing it because the labels hadn't come in. But on their website it looks like you can buy it with the promise of curbside pickup. This is very sketchy. Buyer beware. Also I don't appreciate driving 50 miles round trip for the business's incompetence. How can you have a release date three days out without having the product complete? Very over hyped.

Yelp
Had a great time at Reservoir Distillery tonight! First time ever being here and the owner was hanging out at the bar. We had a lovely chat about start up, production and sales. My boyfriend tried all 3 whiskeys and said they are wonderful: wheat, bourbon and rye. They serve them specifically in that order when you get their sampler pack. His favorite was the wheat. I am not a huge whiskey drinker outside of a cocktail which thankfully they had on menu. I got their Southern (something??) Which had mint and lime in it and was really really good. I could drink several of those! Also tried their version of an old fashioned but it was a little bit too strong for me. The atmosphere is chill, its a small tasting room with bar and very chill. We got a bottle of the Reservoir Wheat to go. Very resonsbly priced.

Yelp
A must-experience spot in the heart of Scott's Addition. Cool vibe, great spirits, friendly staff.

Yelp
I'm a big whiskey lover but don't let that turn you away from this distillery as they make cocktails as well, they aren't just serving straight whiskey. I lived down the street from this distillery since May and finally ventured in here over the weekend. It was great service and great whiskey, I can't emphasis that enough. The bartenders are VERY knowledgeable about the whiskey that is made and sold there and will gladly answer any questions you may have and will give you a quick introduction to what you order in terms of what it's made of and it's percentages. I got the sampler for $13.00, I was able to get about half a shot of the four whiskeys they make there. It was a wheat, rye and 2 bourbons. They were all great but I particularly liked the wheat and the rye, the rye was really smooth. I ended up buying a bottle of the wheat to take home for around $42.00 for a 375 ml bottle which was definitely pricy. For a 725 ml bottle it was around $84.00 which I think is a standard sized bottle that you would buy. It is some of the more pricy whiskey I've bought but it was worth it. I will buy another eventually, just a matter of if it's in the budget. But of course the price is higher than average, its handmade right there and tastes phenomenal. So you're getting what you pay for. The tasting area itself was pretty small though, if there is more than 20 people than it would be crowded. I was able to drink comfortably though as there was about 10 people in there with me. And there was no where to sit either, there's a bar and a place to stand by the window but nothing else. It's more of a tasting room than a bar so Be forewarned. And I think that's the point so im not going to put that against them and degrade a great establishment. That was really my only complaint though. The space available to try and relax there should be improved to attract more people.

Petros D.

Yelp
Not usually a bourbon/whiskey dude. This place could help change that. Had the taster, big fan. The bartender Mike (I think it was Mike) was really cool. High recommend this spot. Great walking distance to tons of other cool shit and the aromas inside will keep you longer than you planned.

Yelp
Found this on a recommendation from a local. Small quaint with all small batch whiskey. The wheat is very smooth with a hint of sweetness. The bourbon is 100% corn and a tad hot but that's a characteristic of corn liquor. It is mellowed out due to the aging. They do age in 5 gallon barrels and that does give a quicker aging so I'm impressed with that. The rye is a rye with the spice that tends to follow a rye whiskey. It is very smooth and drinkable and even as someone that's not a fan of Rye it's still drinkable for everyone. The Hunter and Scott is a blend of all three and is 90 proof instead of 100 and it's aged for a year instead of 2. As a blend you defiantly get all three flavors so it truly is a blend. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and very personable. This is apparently a local hot spot as it's full of locals. Pricing is in line with most boutique distilleries.

Yelp
Great spot. We hosted a client event here The staff were great hosts and the whiskey is top- notch. Lots of character and a great back story. Excited to see what it grows into. I really enjoyed all the whiskey, particularly favored the wheat whiskey.

Yelp
I've never been to a distillery before, but I stumbled upon this place while bar hopping in Scott's Addition. I loved the decor inside, and the vibe. The whiskey was also great. As someone who isn't a huge drinker I ordered a whiskey ginger, because I knew I wouldn't be able to handle it straight. It was really good! I rated 4 stars because they don't have a bathroom.... which is not the best when you're drinking. Be sure to be prepared for that!!

Jenna N.

Yelp
Great tasting, fun, mellow atmosphere. Highly recommended for a drink before dinner or stop by hopping around Scott's addition bars and cideries. Sabrina was very welcoming, great host. We'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Granted I had never been to a distillery before so I have no comparison, but I really enjoyed my time at Reservoir! It's situated in an ideal location in Scott's Addition, making it a perfect stop on a weekend tour of breweries of the area. Walking in, there are about 5-6 stools at the bar, a couple lounge chairs, and two bigger tables. Overall, it felt really small, but intimate. A tasting of 3 (wheat, bourbon, and rye) whiskeys was $10 which seemed super reasonable. My favorite was the bourbon, but all three were smooth and solid. Our host was very friendly and welcoming; he was very knowledgable about all the whiskeys and even let my group have a couple extra samples of his personal favorite mixes.

Yelp
A delicious Virginia Bourbon whiskey. Sweeter and smoother than the common Kentucky Bourbons. Bottled at 100 proof. Hard to find, and spendy, but worth the effort. Corn is the main ingredient in Bourbon, Reservoir also makes a Rye and a Wheat Whiskey, that I have yet to taste. Will update this review once I've tried them.

Cynthia D.

Yelp
Recently bought a bottle that I didn't love and the owner said to stop by so we could find something better. Nicest owner EVER. Not only did I get a great bottle of bourbon, but I got a tour of the distillery (during their non-open hours!) a hat, and got to try a few new things. Definitely recommend this place for a tasting if you're in the area. Thank you Reservoir!
