If you wish to eat anything that resembles French cuisine, this place is not for you, even though the decor is very beautiful.
The waiter steered me toward ordering the Turbut fish fillet that was to come with cauliflower and tarragon sauce. I received a re-heated piece of fish that was swimming in butter and the only spices I noted were sugar and salt. The fish lied near a ragout of spinach. The spinach was swimming in butter and seasoned with salt and sugar. Near the spinach there was a potato puree. Like the rest of the food, it was swimming in butter and spiced with salt and sugar. To my surprise the cauliflower, undercooked, was not seasoned with anything. Nowhere could I note any hints of tarragon. Other herbs would have probably been beyond what the chef can imagine.
What can I say? For this kind of disaster I can eat in a Polish home-style restaurant . I must add here that as much as I enjoy visiting Poland, I'm completely revolted by the sugar and fat added to everything, from salsa to gulash in polish cuisine. For sure, a mom and pop Polish restaurant serving this food won't cost 150 zloty per person (without wine or beer).
The cafe latte I ordered came as mainly semi-cold milk with some diluted coffee probably made from al-cheapo beans. The espresso at the end of the meal tasted the same, water colored in brown.
The only plate that might have resembled something French was the cheese plate. I'm glad the chef did not put sugar on the cheese. I also requested salad vert to go with it, in the hopes that the fresh greens will help me digest the incredible amounts of butter. The greens were very tired, quite wilted.
Aside from one kind of bread roll, all the bread that was served was not fresh, and no one even bothered to re-heat it the same way the fish was re-heated and supposedly improved with copious butter and sugar. The olive oil that came with the bread was reasonable.
The service was very slow, yet the waiter was kind enough to lower the volume of the kitschy french musac.
At this point you are wondering why I haven't returned the plates to the kitchen and requested to be fed with the French food for which this restaurant is oh so famous - Michelin stars etc.
I came for a mid-day lunch. I erred by not eating breakfast. I was hungry, so I figured out that I'd better eat this crap rather than faint from hunger until the chef concocts something that has some semblance to French food.
I paid. I left a 15% tip. As I was walking and enjoying the fantastic weather, I started having palpitations. I usually get these as I digest food with MSG. Perhaps this MSG explain the super saltiness of the food. Two and a half blocks from the restaurant, I threw up the whole lunch. I don't know whether this was because of the copious amounts of butter or because I was so deeply disgusted by the sugar in the fish, the sugar in the spinach, the sugar in the potatoes etc. Luckily, I had dog poop bags to collect the mess, and Krakow has many trash cans to keep the city clean.
I must add here that the French restaurant at the other edge of Krakow's old town does serve something that reminds one of French food. For sure they use spices other than sugar and salt for their main dishes. They are about 30% cheaper than this sham.
