"ENVY: Sinfully-Good Tapas on Prinsengracht If artful cuisine served in sleek yet homey ambiance appeals, it would be sinful to miss Envy, a chic pearl on Prinsengracht, honored for the sixth consecutive year by Michelin. You're not likely to commit gluttony at this Italian deli-inspired tapas bistro, unless you opt for a tasting menu by award-winning Chef Michael Wolf. Starring such delicacies as pig cheeks and lacquered eel, plus cold dishes, deli meats, cheeses and desserts, these feasts are great for special splurges. In Envy's narrow interior, a world of food preparation opens, with chefs preparing culinary masterpieces in full view of diners. Perched on high stools at a long wooden table, we lusted after sausages, cheeses, oysters, jams and wines showcased in 26 oak-finished refrigerators with gleaming chrome handles. While nothing is for sale besides menu offerings, the display inspired us to dive into Dutch raw oysters served with a shot of shallot vinegar and lemon garnish. A selection of Dutch sausages followed, seasoned with wine-preserved garlic, rosemary, lavender, black pepper, chili and fennel. The Envy concept came to owner Bert van der Leden after he visited many Roman delicatessens that offer samples of their products. In that tradition, Envy proudly serves sausages by Brandt & Levie, run by three former chefs who traveled around Italy searching for the best meat shops' secrets. The chefs-turned-butchers now make their own sausages just outside Amsterdam, using Dutch pigs and fine herbs."

We had an amazing dinner. We did a 8 course treat and every single one was wonderful. Starting of with a lovely cocktail going over to a nice bottle of wine. The wine prices are super fair and there is a great choice. The service was really friendly and took the time to describe every course in detail. We Were sitting on the big table next to the chefs, which seemed to have a great atmosphere and a lot of passion for every detail on the plate. Thanks for this great evening.

I’ll admit: reviewing Envy based on their re-opening weekend feels a little unfair. I’m confident it won’t be long until this place is fully up to speed, but today it’s not quite the well-oiled machine you’d expect based on the price point. So why four stars? Well, mostly because the food is simply very good. There are some teething problems, though. For example, it might take a while before you get your order. In addition, if you and your company ordered different dishes, don’t expect your food to necessarily arrive at the same time. However - and this is what matters - I had some great dishes (loved the cod and the lamb, as well as the burrata and steak tartare starters). I’m sure if you visit the restaurant in a few weeks from this review, the slight issues I encountered will have been ironed out. Also good to mention: the staff is super friendly and helpful (especially considering that I was there at the re-opening night, which must have been stressful). Did I mention the wine list was excellent, too? On that note - all wines are available by the glass, which is a nice touch. So yes - all in all, had a wonderful evening and would recommend although in some aspects Envy might be a touch on the expensive side (I’m looking at you, 8,50 bottle of water…).

My evening at Envy was fantastic! I did the 5 course taster, every dish was amazing! The staff were super friendly & great at explaining each course. The restaurant is beautiful. Highly recommend a visit!

Google
What a fantastic place for a dinner. We enjoyed the 7 course chef's menu with extra oysters and loved every single dish (seriously, was even hard to choose the favourite one at the end!). Thank you for your attention to details, team Envy! Special thank you to the Chef and Bravo! 👏

Google
WOW. This is the kind of restaurant that makes me want to go back and delete 5 star ratings I gave to others because these guys just totally redefined the entire scale. Mind blowing creativity and brilliance. So good that I almost want to actually move to Amsterdam so I can be a regular. We had the 4 course tasting menu, which was just incredible. Our only regret was that our vegan friend was not able to join us because this place makes vegetarian and vegan dining just as extraordinary as it is for the rest of us. No worries, we will bring him tomorrow! I could go back to this place every week and never get bored. Top of my list, globally, hands down!!

I came here to celebrate my first wedding anniversary. The meal my wife and I had was unbelievably delicious - it was a true gastronomic experience! Envy is a great place to celebrate if you are looking for an upscale restaurant. We tried the chef's tasting menu with wine pairings and it was truly a flavourful experience for the taste buds!

Erich Zirnhelt

Google
Truly an incredible experience. The food and flavor mixes were spectacular! I wished I had done the wine pairing, so I did it the second time!

Yelp
Excellent Food and Service. Everything was fresh and creative. A must try when in Amsterdam. Note the restaurant has changed its name.

Yelp
My mom and I booked Envy for their New Year's Eve tasting menu. The place was packed when we arrived for our 9:15pm reservations, but we were warmly greeted by the kind hostess who doubled as waitress throughout the night. Our waiter so sweet and was as attentive as he possibly could be given the chaos of the evening. Every table was full and the kitchen was working their butt off. I'll summarize each course: Bread and Butter: Amazing and we managed to finish the whole loaf by our 3rd course. Mackerel with Kale: This was tasty, especially the crispy roasted Kale Potato with Eel: The sauce was very flavorful, but there was only 2 small pieces of eel. Halibut with Fermented Mushroom: I enjoyed this, the halibut was so buttery and creamy. Deer with Cauliflower: I've never had deer before, but this was dIfficult to cut through. It was cooked medium rare and had a very slight gamey taste, but still good. The cauliflower had roasted macadamia nuts on top that was to die for. Cheese Plate: The server dropped this off without explaining what was on the plate. I'm guessing it was Brie, Bleu and some other hard cheese. I don't know what the other two dipping jams were, but they were good. Prickly Pear Sorbet Dessert: The presentation was beautiful, but I felt like there were too many flavors going on to really enjoy it. Envy is best reserved for a special occasion and I would definitely come back for a regular dinner to try their traditional tasting menu. It was a great spot to spend the New Year as the crowd was fun and friendly.

Yelp
We have been coming to Envy from the USA for over a decade now. Chef Derek has now taken it back to its glory days of exceptional food--and then some. His infusion of spices and creativity is exemplary and sensible. Some restaurants try to bolster the menu with crazy combinations. Derek really blends amazing combinations. The service under the direction of Patrick--who is on top of everything--is amazing, too! Photos: His pasta w/marscapone sauce is topped with ingenious several hours baked yeast crumbs creating an amazing crunchy and flavorful topping. Absolutely to die for! Polenta and portobello mushroom with mushroom gravy, balsamic vinegar, and egg purée. Amazing! Langoustine risotto with langoustines and sweetbreads. The best course yet. Incredible!

Yelp
Make rezo! Our dining experience for 5 course tasting was pretty darn impressive! It's dark inside and the layout is one long alley. Pork belly amuse bouche was so perfect.as well as the iberico ham and other seafood courses. The entire party must order. Last bottle of Sancerre was snagged, so we chose a bottle of Sauv Blanc. Dinner ran approx $80 pp, including service. Truly not bad at all!

Yelp
I can't say this place is a hidden gem because it's always popping. Very busy. Tables are always full. You won't be able to get a table just walking in. Reservations are a must. But I got lucky and was given a table at the hightop area. I had to sit pretty close to people but I'll take that for some amazing bites. The restaurant was located right next to my hotel, The Andaz. Walking by, I took a look at the menu and instantly decided this is what I wanted to eat for dinner. They weren't open for lunch but their staff could be seen through the windows already prepping for their busy nights. The restaurant is long and narrow but could seat many. Their menu wasn't small or big. Everything looked delicious. From the appetizers we ordered, down to the tapas small plates, everything was a hit. For around $50/person, we actually did get full! We started off with cold cuts - iberico ham and bread. Then tried a few other dishes paired with wine. We tasted their pork belly, beef tartare, pigeon, scallops, and short rib. EVERY dish was small but hit all the right taste buds. Definitely shareable. Just writing my review is making my mouth water. That's how good the meal was! The staff were impeccable. They provided new plates and silverware on each round. They cleaned the table tops and made sure they were watching your glass. Due to the small seating area I was given, I had to hold my winter cold the entire time but other than that, I was very pleased with this restaurant on my trip!

Yelp
We were running a little bit late to our reservation because our flight got delayed some how we manage to get to the place because somebody had highly recommended it to us. We had to try our luck. Even though the kitchen was already closing we talked to the manager and explain our situation he spoke with the chef and he was very nice and understandable and agreed to cook for us. We try the set menu even though I don't eat row food or eat non cow cheese I decided to give it a try because of the nice gesture of the chef and manager to let us in. I'm sure that if I had told them in advance of my poor taste for food they would had fixed me something else but I just didn't want to bother them even more. My husband enjoyed everything they gave us and I enjoyed the dishes that I eat. They have a pretty good wine selection too. We will definitely will be back to Amsterdam and we will definitely will come back to Envy.

Yelp
Although there had been a confusion and our reservation had been missed, the service team managed to turn around what could have been a bad experience into actually a very good one. We did have to wait however the team had all kind of caring details and making our decision to stay one of the best choices. The food is excellent, the team is great and the ambience fantastic. I recommend the place 100%.

Yelp
This is one of my all-time favorite meals, and I've been to a lot of fabulous restaurants. The restaurant has several Michelin-starred chefs doing very creative dishes. We had a half dozen or so small plates, an Amuse Bouche, along with wine and beer. The flavors of each dish were so amazing, ingredients were very fresh and unique with a lovely presentation. The dishes were a bit on the high side and we ended up spending much more than we had intended, but given it was one of the best meals of my life, it was worth every Euro!

Yelp
The Seven Deadly Sins were inscribed on the front door. Greed. Lust. Gluttony. Envy. Wrath. Pride. Sloth. It was ominous that I was going to commit a cardinal sin that night. But what would it be? Could it be lust? No, definitely not. Those tall, blonde, slim and gorgeous Dutch girls aren't my type. So what sin would that be? The cardinal sin that I was ready to commit that night was probably gluttony. But I wonder who would be committing the sin of envy. It wouldn't be you, would it? You wouldn't be envious that I'm dining in a Michelin rated restaurant halfway around the World in Amsterdam - in a restaurant called Envy - would you? No, I trust that you wouldn't. So let's take a look at my sins that night: Prosciutto di Parma: The menu claimed that they have been aged 16 months and I believe them. It was very flavorful but not overly salty. Just like fine wine, they were gentle to the palate. Dutch sausage with black pepper: The quality of the meat was good and it was not as chewy as I thought it would be. With the aroma of various herbs and a hint of black pepper, the flavor was rich but subtle. Carpaccio of roasted scallop with cream of peas and daikon: This was the shining star of the evening. The thinly sliced scallops were so perfect in both texture and taste. The flavor of this dish was complex, with the sweetness of the peas and daikon contrasting the richness of the scallops. Lacquered sea bass with pearl couscous: This is another dish with a complex flavor. The sea bass filet was so well lacquered that it had a shiny and tasty glaze. Topped with a nice serving of exotic enokitake mushrooms and pearl couscous, this dish offers a creative fusion with an Asian and Mediterranean twist. Braised beef cheeks with burrata and young vegetables: To many foodies, beef cheeks are some of the best cuts of beef for stews. And the cheeks here were amazing - melt-in-the-mouth was almost an understatement. Paired with fresh burrata - an Italian cream cheese made with mozzarella - it's a match made in foodie heaven. Greed. Lust. Gluttony. Envy. Wrath. Pride. Sloth. Which sin did you just commit?

Yelp
Amazing! Seriously this place is a total find for a refined palette. Before you even sit you are greeted with a amuse bouche, but order at least entrees as they are more like tapas (small plates). Everything is beautiful and unique, and a great break from the normal brassseries and street vendors. Just check the pictures!

Yelp
I came to Envy for the first time five years ago, and my second time paled significantly in comparison. Perhaps it was my naïveté that led me to be impressed with my meal, or perhaps Envy's standards has dropped significantly since then. I got the 8-course meal, which is a series of small plates meant to be playful, farm to table, with a slight modernist twist. For most of the dishes, the execution never really lived up to its appearance or description. Most of the dishes suffered from a lack of contrasting textures - there was a lot of foams and purees and gels, but not so much crisp and crunch to carry that flavor. I had an overcooked fish dish and a perfectly cooked one, very unappetizing looking white asparagus yet a colorfully plated beet dish. Which reminds me - beets were key features in two back to back dishes and that did not strike me as a very thoughtful multi-course experience. Service got exceedingly slower and slower as the restaurant filled up, and our last three dishes were spaced about 20 minutes apart - which is a while, for things that could be put away in a couple of bites. I hated the last few dishes for that reason because all I wanted to do was get up and leave. Be warned.

Yelp
Review summary: The five-star restaurant where you can expect a gastronomy experience of both flavor and texture with whimsicality (molecular gastronomy) and importantly in peccable service and attention to detail. Compared to similar experiences in New York City very good value for the money! Drop ins are rare so better plan ahead. As previous reviewer's have noted it is a very trendy hip modern decor. The amuze bouche for the evening was a pair of muscle ceviche which of been fairly well Blanche following their cooking process of removing any fishing this flavor and leading a nice delicate texture. This was paired on the side of the coconut curry soup which was fantastically well executed! (As good as any Thai place I have been!). That being said two dishes did not hear very well together due to the different acidity flavor profiles (muscles very delicate flavor wow the coconut curry was robust and strong). Rating: 5/5 First course was steak tartare: The beef had been put through very smallest meat grinder setting and mixed nicely with herbs served with hot peppers and sour cream. There was a slight "gamey" aftertaste. Rating: 4/5 For the second course we go to molecular gastronomy with a combination of potato and dehydrated Evoo - The potatoes were full of flavor as they have been sold first and then smoke on the grill all sitting on a bed of puréed rosted shallots. Fantastic this all in all. Rating 5/5 Third course was a pan seared whitefish (but without crispy skin) served on top of the cauliflower purée, blueberries, and mixed berry compote. The berries were very overpowering versus the whitefish making the dish less successful. Rating: 3/5 The next course was a slow cooked beef served with a jue reduction of beef+port and sunchoke purée on the side. The beef was well prepared but the star of the dish with the sunchoke purée and the reduction! Once again the beef had a very gamey taste... rating: 4/5 The first dessert this evening was a whimsical mocha and a coda here with the hazelnut croquant powder and a foie gras ice cream - overall very whimsical and delicious - Great balance of sweet and savory ! Rating: 5/5 The second the third was all about texture and acidity versus sweetness: mix of yogurt yogurt ice cream and crumbles of chocolate, Caramell puff rice and popcorn. Another fantastic mixture of flavors and texture. Rating: 5/5

Yelp
To be fair, we came at the very tail end of lunch service ( the place was almost empty) so I would give it another try if I was in the area... It was a chilly day so we started with truffle soup (pretty good flavor but needed to be blended & heated a little longer), had the burrata and prosciutto (beautiful presentation), and cheese & sausage platters. Everything was good, but nothing really exceptional. Can see it being a good pre-dinner drinks/apps kinda place if it fills up a little more...

Yelp
I had a light dinner at Envy during my trip to Amsterdam in October. This place is all about small plates and tapa style menu. I had foie gras, jamon iberico, pork belly and their bread with truffle mayo sauce. On the scale of 5. Atmosphere: 5 - Excellent The restaurant has both regular table that you probably need to reserve in advance as well as open bar-like tables. All of it surrounded by huge fridges where you can see different kind of cured meats on display. Food: 4 - Very good Menu is very interesting and elegant. The foie gras with orange sauce was probably the most interesting variation I've tried so far. Pork belly, on other side, wasn't cooked that well. It was slightly chewy and I didn't feel this is the best I've tried, especially for the price. Drinks: - I had wine, it was decent and the selection is ok, but I don't think they serve any signature cocktails there. Price: 4 - Very Good It's expensive fine dinning place. The price was on point for a such establishment. Service: 5 - Great Service was really good and food came out relatively fast.

Yelp
Then on King's Day, I passed this little cute spot and reminded myself to be back here. And we made it. 3 course dinner tasting menu. The difference starts with truffle butter served bread. :)) 1st course: Quinoa salad. A good balance and not too light to begin with. Dressing is made to perfect - Vinaigrette, foam and olive oil are all of best amount. Four little dishes. Mushroom Soup, beef tartar, salmon roll and gambas. Beautifully presented. We particularly like the soup as it is probably most the longly cooked dish of all night. Time tell darling! 2nd dish is grilled mackerel with mushroom, overcooked rice in eggwhite foam. I claim I can't handle eggs, but the ingredient here tastes heaven. Dutch do love mackerel. 3rd course goes to the beef. No shame to deny this is our favourite. They display the steak as a rabbit, with pumpkin puree as the ears. Okay, it does not look that cruel. Trust me. The sauce was sweet and yet savoury, not sure if they played with soy sauce. Highlight for sure. We then had the cheese board and one friend went for dessert.

Yelp
The food here is Amazing. It's definitely on the pricey side, consider each dishes is quite small, if you order 4-5 dishes for each person, it'll be 50-65 euro per person. Not including drink. Besides the price, everything else is great! Love the modern trendy decoration, the chef greeted us right after we walked into the restaurant and gave us a small glass of tomato (or some vegetable) purée while we were waiting to be seated. The food here is really fresh and flavorful, some combination here are quite unique and unexpected. The presentation and the plating is awesome. When we were struggled which dessert to order (because they all looked amazing) the chef decided to make something new to surprised us. A wonderful experience! Highly recommended.

Chris D.

Yelp
Probably the best and certainly the most imaginative vegetarian fare I've ever had. The prix fixe was 8 courses of deliciousness, with balance and coordination throughout. A near perfect meal. Highly recommend!

Yelp
How can I describe the magic that is Envy! Upon entering you are greeted by smiling Chefs with an open kitchen creating all sort of deliciousness! After a small aperitif we were taking to a looong table in amongst other diners providing a unique convivial atmosphere. We the order the tasting menu which was to die for a series of small bites all thoughtfully made to engage all of the senses! Non pretentious, good food with smiles for miles what's not to like! If in Amsterdam go there and treat yourself! You won't regret it!

Yelp
Large plates, small portions. Not expensive, but you end up ordering a lot because each dish is basically bite size. Delicious. Creative. Space is beautifully designed.

Yelp
We walked in on a Friday night and had very good luck. A couple had not shown up for their 7:30 reservation so we were able to take their seats at the high tables. We selected a four course tasting menu without fish (my husband is allergic). The food was fantastic. It being April it is asparagus month so each course had asparagus. We started with an asparagus salad, moved on to a lemon risotto with spring vegetables, fresh baked bread with garlic butter and truffle butter, duck in broth with green asparagus, and ended with white chocolate topped with a walnut crumble, berry gels, and white asparagus. The tapas sized portions were perfect - enough to enjoy the flavors and feel full. The entire meal was wonderful. The servers describe each dish. Sitting at the high table was comfortable. I have a bit of a hearing problem and I did not find the place too loud.
google avatar

Tash S.

Yelp
Could this place be any cooler? No. No it couldn't. The whole restaurant is one long thin room, with tables in classy alcoves along the walls or on high bar-style tables. We had the chef's four course menu, and every course was delicious. The staff were helpful, the presentation was fantastic, and the atmosphere was cozy yet cool. An absolute gem in Amsterdam.

Yelp
Great service , beautiful ambience, good location, we tried the 4 course set lunch menu , all very small plates , decent but no wow, mini burger, lobster with a cherry foam, beef with miso ( the best dish by far) and almond ice cream based dessert, with 2 glasses of wine just over Euro 105 , good but not worth that price

Yelp
Great experience here the other weekend! Our group of six enjoyed the Envy's Chef Choice menu, which came with several deli meats such as mortadella, salami and jamon Iberico. They were each unique and so tasty. Next up was a selection of delicacies including steak tartar and oysters. This was some of the best steak tartar of memory. After that was a yummy sea bass and scallop dish. For the main event was a sliced steak and despite the lovely presentation it lacked any real flavour. The meal picked back up again with a delicious selection of cheeses and then ended with a bang with the most delicious dessert. It might have been the babaretto but I'm honestly not sure. This place had an amazing atmosphere and the dishes were so unique. Hope to return!

Yelp
This was one of the best meals we had in Amsterdam. Envy was on our hotel's recommended restaurants list, and we were not disappointed. We all decided to go for the chef's tasting menu; it seems the restaurant experience was optimized for that. They accommodated my husband's dietary restrictions (he is mostly vegetarian but does eat fish) with no problem or hassle. The entire meal took about 2 hours but it did not feel as painstakingly long because the experience was such an adventure. The wait staff was attentive and friendly. Would definitely eat here again!

Yelp
This is a great great simple restaurant!! Food is closer to Art- and - Sex ... I'm so speechless, this experience is one that you will probably will not have any other place in the World. It's young fresh and full surprises.

Yelp
After a full day walking through Amsterdam, we went for a dinner at Envy using a bongo-card we had received before (this bongo-card is a dinner voucher, which entitles you to a 4 course dinner where you only have to pay for your drinks). We thought this was a great opportunity to try Envy :) I really liked the way the place is decorated and regarding the food I can be very brief: it was just delicious!!! Unfortunately, there were two things that bothered me in the service during the evening: * After I received my wine I found it to be quite chilly, while the wine my wife had was at normal temperature. After telling our waitress about this, she told me that she could get me another glass, but that probably would have the same temperature. She advised me to just warm it up with my hands.... Fortunately, after some time she got back to me and brought me another glass and told me she put the wine in a warm glass. The result was that the temperature of the wine was a lot better. So I was really happy with this solution! * When visiting the toilet, I had to wait because it was occupied. After the person got out of the toilet, he went straight back to the employee part without washing his hands. Was a bit shocked about seeing this and started appreciating the sign they have in the US at pretty much all businesses: Employees MUST wash their hands before returning to work... Not sure what exactly the job of this guy was, but fortunately he was not standing in the open kitchen :)

Yelp
Five stars for the food. 3 stars for the 3:30 length of the meal. More attention between flights would have made it a much more enjoyable experience. After 2 hours you're just begging to be done. But the food was excellent. Had the 8 course chefs menu.

Yelp
Wow! I'm from NYC and I literally happened upon this place as I walked home from work In our Amsterdam office... Took a detour and decided to consult Yelp for nearby restaurants. I had no idea how lucky I was to be near Envy. Every single detail about my dining experience here was amazing: service, attention to detail, vibey atmosphere, and the food... Simply incredible. I've eaten at some Michelin gems, but this place ranks high on my list of best restaurants I have ever eaten at. I'm not super familiar with Amsterdam dining, but I can't imagine there is a place better than this. Highly recommended!!!

Yelp
Excellent! A gifted sommelier and server paired delicious wines with a 5 course tasting menu. Definitely worth the euros. Sleek romantic space in the heart of Amsterdam. Only meters away from their sister wine bar Vyne. I will most definitely return first chance I get.

Yelp
I found this place while walking back to our hotel the first day of being in Amsterdam. It was a rainy afternoon, walking on Prinsengracht. We noticed a group of people going in/out of this restaurant. We actually stopped to look through the glass window and said to ourselves: "food here must be an amazing place; it is busy and the chefs cook with passion". After reading the menu - which was posted outside the entrance - the decision was unanimous: we needed to eat here. One night later, the 'experience' was on! As you walk in, you are welcomed with the 'open-style' kitchen. It is located right after the main door and immediately to the right. I love being able to see chefs at work. To me, their job is a work of art. And I appreciate art very much. Seeing them prepare beautiful food incredibly enhanced our dining experience. Each plate is prepared with intense carefulness and finesse. They take their time to make sure everything that comes out is absolutely perfect. I praise them for this. Back to the food, Envy was offering two menus that evening: à la carte or chef's tasting menu. We chose à la carte and ordered 5 different plates. * Scallops with curry and cream of lemon verbena * Rollmops of Dutch herring, served with a cream of arugula * Creamy risotto with shaved lettuce and salmon * Foie Gras served with apple, puffed rice and a merengue of cabernet sauvignon * Black Angus in port sauce, served with creamy potatoes, roasted tomatoes and asparagus. Everything, and I mean E V E R Y T H I N G was exquisite - each bite heavenly. The food quality = phenomenal. Service = great. Wine =divine. I would say this was our absolute favorite restaurant in Amsterdam. I highly suggest stopping by when in the area. The price/cost is not cheap, but totally worth it in my opinion. As one of my favorite people would say: I bid you good eating.

Yelp
Wow, I absolutely loved this place. The service was great, the drink was great, the food was fantastic! We got the 6-course tasting menu, and everything was superb. They also brought us mini dishes between our courses. The portions were pretty small, so I'd recommend doing at least the 6-course tasting. I was comfortably full at the end. I'd probably try an 8-course menu if I went back, and I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Yelp
Friday night, it's not so filled... Hmmm... I walked by the restaurant one day and it seemed interesting. The kitchen is in front and can't see inside of the restaurant at all. That made me want to try Envy. I made a reservation and went for the special night. We had the "chef choice" for 2 - with a little adjustment of 1 regular and 1 no-meat. The food was not memorable but it was fun to go there. I feel like that It's a kind of restaurant that sells more of "experience" than food... Pros: - Stuff members are very attentive. - Their decor is stylish and modern. (All black and chrome. It's really dark, though...) - They were flexible and nice to make some adjustment for my husband's "chef choice" to non-meat dishes. Cons: - Their food is not too special... I didn't find so much originality. - The price is pretty high for that... - Not so many choices of beer on tap. (I guess this is a wine restaurant...) - We made a reservation online about a week before the day. But when we called for the confirmation the day before, we found out that it didn't go through and we had no reservation... So we had long, communal table seats with bar chairs. - The bathroom is on the second floor and you have to climb up very steep stairs. People with leg problems and on wheel chairs will have a hard time... This is normal in Amsterdam, though...

Yelp
The decor at Envy is quite beautiful. There are small tables next to each other on the booth side and then high top tables with clear glass refrigerators containing locally sourced produce. I did not like how close my table was to the person next to me as he decided to jump into the conversation because he heard everything we were talking about. I felt Envy tried a little too hard to make their tasting dishes sophisticated. Less is more in my opinion. The only dish I walked away from really enjoying was the Jerusalem artichoke dish with a long cooked egg and caviar. Otherwise I felt the other dishes were mediocre and not worth my money. Finally, the service was extremely poor. While the waiters were good looking and nice, they took 20-30 mins to bring our wine and over an hour before we received our first "course." (We did 4 courses) The description of each dish was a bit over the top and pretentious to be honest. No one apologized for the wait and we ended up spending 3.5 hours eating on a Monday night where we were the first people in the restaurant. (Maybe because a party of ten came in right after us that they could not handle?)

Yelp
Envy is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. The dishes were creative, out-of-the-box, and delicious. I highly, highly recommend it. A reservation is a must. Try to eat outside on the terrace if you can so you can people watch and enjoy the weather. We only got a seat outside because we went on a Tuesday night (and it was still crowded!!). The dishes are very small but filling. We each ate 4 small plates plus desert. Every single dish was incredible. It was an expensive meal but 100% worth it because it was was an EXPERIENCE! I will recommend Envy to all of my friends who visit Amsterdam in the future.

Yelp
Sat at the chef's table and did the tasting menu. While not all the food was a hit out of the park. The egg was one the most delicious things I've ever eaten in my life ... Buttery salty goodness.

Yelp
Terrific chef tasting menu and wine pairings - stylish and tasty. Particularly like the pork belly with very delicately prepared vegetables and the complex banana desert Great service and very friendly

Yelp
This modern restaurant was the last place I tried during my trip in Amsterdam. Nice welcoming, choose your table wherever you like. My preference is to seat in front the kitchen, but, you to be in more in a quiet table go to the back. Pretty dark inside, make it a good choice for a quiet dinner with your lover. Lunch menu is 35 euro each including 4 courses. Firs course was composed of three small tasting portion of crackers, Herring and a nice cauliflower soup. Then they prepared a beautiful mussel plate, fresh veggies nicely presented. The 3rd course was a piece of meat: entrecôte. Tender and topped with mushrooms. great. For dessert, I got the mango and banana plate. Perfect sweet touch to end a classy lunch. Fast service, good seating make it a good choice for Amsterdam. Very good quality of food, cannot be more fresh.

Yelp
Before leaving Amsterdam, I wanted to find place that would rock my taste buds and food experience. And here it was. Envy. How fitting of the name. You all should be. This is a food art at it finest. Enter - if you have reservations, you can get a booth, if not, you can sit at long communal bar-table, and it is kinda better experience - the never ending table with spectacular round reflective lights is beautiful in it settings. Drinks menu is simple, classy, and creative. It gravitates heavily towards gin-tonics, and I really enjoyed their creations. They are refreshing, complex and clean. Sipsmith & Fevertree was great choice. Wine menu is available as well. Now, to the food - the idea stems from tapas, but it brought to another level here. Each course is unique and presented as art on a plate. It's art the way you see it, and art in taste. Start with bread and one of their dry cured goods - lavender dutch sausage for example. Smooth and subtle. Next, to small dishes - herring with rich crab salad & turnips, balancing herring slight acidity. It was divine. Steak tartar, with little quail egg on top, beautifully garnished with radishes & cucumbers and perfectly seasoned. Fresh scallops - this is as fresh as they come, I assure you. Perfectly seared just on outside, topped with turnips and presented with beer meringue and lime shavings. Delish. Portions are small - which I like, since I can still have room for coffee and dessert. Espresso was really good - I mean most coffee in Europe is; and White mandarin cake with avocado ice cream was perfect sweet ending for a perfect meal. Definitely try it if you in Amsterdam. But for now, envy me for being there and enjoying all that beautiful food.

Yelp
It was really dark inside the restaurant; could be a good place for a date but the tables are pretty close to each other so you could potentially overhear other people's conversation. Recommend the tasting menu if you don't know where to start!

Yelp
Food amazing. Service meh. Bathroom completely unacceptable. Also; We asked twice for our table to be cleaned (the food was so great we ate like pigs). We heard a server complain to his colleague about us and our impatience regarding the cleaning. I asked this colleague to bring me the manager. Turns out the complaining waiter was the manager. I then asked him to ask the manager to come see us. Manager avoided us for the rest of the night. At the end of the night (and 400€ later) I walked up to the manager and asked him why he bad mouthed paying customers to his colleagues within hearing distance of said customers -- if you bad mouth us; fine but do it where I can't hear it. He said that we asked for our table to be cleaned twice within ten minutes while he was busy and thought that was pushing it. He continued to argue with me on this to the point that we were raising our voices. We left feeling upset and disappointed. Must suck for the guys in the kitchen doing amazing work and having such an ass for a manager. Luckily for mr. Manager I will never return (after being a regular, singing their praises and writing on yelp this was the best Amsterdam has to offer -- it is not anymore)

Yelp
This is an expensive restaurant that actually serves cuisine, so I'm actually going to type quite a long review since Envy deserves it. Went here on a date during Restaurant Week and thoroughly enjoyed my meal. We ordered the chef's tasting menu and received 5 courses. First came a delicious cauliflower flan with truffle oil. So savory, silky, and salty. I think this was my favorite dish in the menu. Next was the white asparagus with pork. Again, so salty and delicious. The asparagus was super tender and not bitter at all. There was also a rich sauce decorating the plate, which I made sure to sop up as much as I could. Our last savory dish was an Angus steak with some sort of grain underneath it. It was very good, but since I'm not a huge steak lover, I can't rave about it like some others could. Next came the desserts. The first one we received was a sort of Pina Colada in a martini glass. It had red bell pepper, mint, and cilantro atop a coconut foam, all of which rested on top of an icy pineapple slush. The foam was rich and tasty, but I really didn't like all the spice flavors in a dessert dish. Then ANOTHER dessert came (at this point, I was actually quite full, and I'm a big eater) which I liked much more. In the center was a rhubarb ice cream, accompanied by rhubarb chunks, cake, sweet wheels of pink gelatin, and tiny dots of vanilla pudding. This dessert was much more appealing to me even though the sweet was cut through with plenty of tart rhubarb flavor. Ok, so we know the food will be good at a joint like this, so let's talk about the environment. First of all, this place was very loud. The design is dark and sexy, but there's nothing sexy about yelling to your dining partner. Mood killer. The seating is divided into a long communal table on the right and small booth/tables on the left. My partner and I were in for a long haul with our tasting menu and both wished we had sat at the tables because the chairs at the long communal table are only back less stools. If you need back support, be sure to request a table in your reservation. The overall ethos of the joint was surprisingly casual. I wouldn't wear sneakers here, but even jeans would be acceptable if dressed up sufficiently. Overall, great food and attentive staff. Definitely great if you're in the mood to celebrate and splurge on a delicious meal, but not so stuffy that you'd have to bust out your finest jewelry.

Yelp
I must be missing something. I wasn't really impressed by the food! It was a disappointment cause I expected so much. Ordered several dishes and a bottle of red wine. I thought the food was lacking taste. Now I have to say I enjoy foods with very strong and intense tastes but for some foods simple tastes are ok, e.g. A steak. For some reason I thought the presentation didn't match the flavors. Shame shame, was a nice evening and nice atmosphere but won't be back.

Yelp
There was a dinner in planning for a long time. My husband and myself got a Bongo restaurant voucher and decided to go and try this place. The voucher was for a 4 course chef menu dinner. We started with a great selection of Italian cold meat cuts with some bread. Afterwards we got a combination of 4 small amuses - pumpkin soup, tartar, salmon and shrimp. My husband stated that he didnt eat fish and the last 2 options were vegetarian in his case. I am sure he would have enjoyed meat option a bit more. Our first course was fish with some young garlic foam and on a bed of fennel (me) and tomato risotto with some burrata (husband), afterwards followed by beef as a main course. For the dessert we had an option of cheese platter or poached pear with mascarpone. we both went for cheese platter. The list of good and a bit worse: Good 1. Food is very good. The portions seemed small but in the end we had enough..not like I cannot move anymore enough..but it was a good portion 2. Friendly service. 3. They have tap water. 4. Decor. a bit worse: 1. Prices for wine - expensive.. 2. Wine glasses are pretty simple and I expected a bit better to match my 6.25 EUR glass. 3. My hubby's wine was cold and the waitress didnt do much..except telling him that it will warm up - unacceptable..Later she came with a warmed glass and a bit warmer wine - uff. 4. My hubby noticed that one of the kitchen employees didnt wash his hands when leaving the toilet....gross... In general I give this place 3.5. Great food, atmosphere, but a bit expensive for what you get.

Yelp
So sad to be at a place w/ good, maybe even great food ... but with horrible ambiance and service. Ambiance: led spotlight on each table ... hit and jail like. Service: It shouldn't take 2.4 hours for 4 courses and it's super sad when wine sometimes comes after food but worse when before course but so long a wait before food they had to refill. Then, second server re-poured same wine each course. Not cool when paying for dinner w/ wine. This was our splurge meal. Wish we had gone to a cafe for soup and spent $ elsewhere.

Yelp
Oh my, oh my... This was one of our favorite gastro-experiences while in Europe! We opted for the tasting menu and got a chance to sample several exquisite dishes that not only tasted absolutely delicious, but looked like masterpieces as well. Highly recommended and truly enjoyed!
