Restaurant Gillis

Not to be missed especially for meat lovers and maybe even for those who like but not love their meat. I dally in the second category but I must say the tenderloin I had was perfectly cooked, very juicy and tender and I enjoyed every bite. It’s served with delicious crust fries, a very tasty tomato salad, potato tart and broccoli. I shouldn’t forget the starters which were a taste of heaven. My partner and I shared the pork belly (so tender), beef croquette (crunchy on the outside but so soft and flavoursome once you cut through) and because I love my pasta paccheri with ragu (nicely cooked Al dente). The staff were polite and helpful and the ambience was a quiet and relaxing one.

This was our first time at Restaurant Gillis and it blew us away. We came down from Amsterdam after reading about the restaurant. The service was very friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable. The wine list is extensive and gave us ample choice to make a match with our dinner. The food was out of this world. We started out with the beef tartar (with caviar and truffle) and bork belly. I had both dishes at other places, but the flavour on these was next level. For mains we all had our own choice of steak. I went with a dry-aged entrecôte which tasted like nothing I had before. We rounded off sight some nice desserts, coffee and some dessert-wine. It was an amazing experience, I would definitely recommend meat-lovers to come to this place. Our thanks to the staff for this wonderful experience! We’ll be coming back for sure!

The food, service, and atmosphere were all excellent. The steaks were of premium quality, while the starters were clearly prepared with care and well-seasoned throughout. However, towards the end of the evening, once most guests had left, a few members of staff lit cigarettes just a few tables away from us, before we were served dessert. Although we were seated outside under a tent, it still felt inappropriate and detracted from an otherwise first-class experience.

Exquisite selection of meat! We had the tasting menu which included multiple starters to share and a main meat dish. Wonderful! No remarks at all. The desserts were great as well, as was the service. 100% recommended!

We visited this renowned meat restaurant in Ghent yesterday — ranked 22nd among the best meat restaurants in the world — and had an absolutely outstanding experience. Our dinner for two was exceptional, with remarkable flavors and perfect preparation. We also loved that our dogs were warmly welcomed inside the restaurant. The selection of meats and wines is truly special, offering excellent options across all price categories. The atmosphere among the staff creates a pleasant and relaxed vibe that carries over into flawless service, complete with valuable explanations and recommendations. We will definitely return. A heartfelt congratulations to the hostess, the chef, and the entire team for delivering such a memorable evening.

Great experience. They have a wide range of meats in different price ranges. The staff can help you make a choice, they seem very knowledgeable and passionate about meat. We had starters to share which were really good and tasty. The staff created a selection for our group which was nice. The main dishes were fantastic. There was plenty of food which is surprising for the price point and quality. A nice plus. Desserts were good and again big portions. We had a great evening.

Exceptional! We managed to get a last minute reservation at Gillis and it didn’t disappoint. Excellent steak, delicious sides and appetisers and a warm ambience - highly recommend!

Gillis became our favorite restaurant in Gent! Their steak and wine game is off the charts. They really take pride in what they do, and I love the dedication that they put into every detail. We can’t wait to visit Gillis again! Lots of love Carol & Gregg

Really looked forward to eating here after reading the reviews. Make no mistake - the meat was exceptional and the server was super helpful! Our large group opted for the 4 different type sampler which was a lot of fun. The server explained each of the choices beforehand and again when served. As suggested we rotated trying a bite of each before the next and the differences were not subtle. We each had our personal favorite which I won't share as they were all great. Beyond the steak, service, and nice decor, the rest of the meal was ok. Fries were acceptable but not memorable. Go for the meat. You won't be disappointed.

Went here for my sister's birthday (her pick). We started with house champagne and then ordered starters. These took a while to arrive, but were very good in quality. I had the duo of pork croquettes, my dad had the laqued pork belly and my sister had the bone marrow. Now, while everything was very nice, the portions of certain items (the bone marrow specifically, 4 bones is a bit much as a starter) were definitely on the larger side of things. Meanwhile wine was ordered too and we had a nice Spanish red wine. I ended up getting the Entrecôte of Simmental as a main, which again was on the large side (managed to finish about half of it). It was perfectly cooked though. The fries and salad weren't much to write home about though (neither was the chicory salad according to my dad). Didn't bother with dessert as I was already full. One other remark I have is that the temperature in the restaurant was definitely on the warm side. I was sitting in a T-shirt and was still sweating.

Nice Italian aged meat, egg rolls, beef stew and salad. Nice wine selection. Service and ambience was perfect.

We were staying close by and so wanted to give them a try. We walked by and asked for a reservation later in the day. Staff was accommodating and helpful in picking cuts and breeds we would like, see photos. Truly a beef/meat place with the opportunity to try unique breeds and locations of meat. We got to review the cuts before preparation. We had the Goat Cheese salad which was excellent and the steaks could have fed two. Great service and wines.

This is one of this restaurants that you would travel from other city to enjoy the high quality of the food! They have meat speciality, so you would be able to enjoy very different types of meat (the owner was a butcher before so that's why all the meat selection is excellent). The service is great, and they take care of small details. I ordered a 'charcuterie' starter and afterwards a stake to share with my boyfriend, and they even brought 2 plates with salad and fries. Very nice atmosphere. Definitely a highly recommended restaurants, I can even say one of my favorites in the world !!

Tired from a long work day and driving to Gent for a first time visit, you just want to eat something easy and quick and go to bed. Advised by our airbnb host we went searching for a simple Italian, and instead we walked in Gilles... How fortunate we did! We sat down, when immediately a Belgian couple seated at the table next to us told us that we arrived 'at the right place'. 'The chef used to be a a very good butcher and started this place specializing in meat, the meat is excellent here'. The woman of the couple turned out to be a 'meat journalist'. We ordered the charcuterie to start with, and the french beefsteak... Because we weren't that hungry we asked if we could share a starter and main course; it was no poblem at all and the chef made two plates for the main course and two separate bowls of fries for each. Very hospitable! When my spanish girlfriend noticed there was some of the best spanish ham (jamon) on display in the middle of the restaurant, and I told the chef that we saw the jamon, he immediately cut of a few slices himself and brought us an extra plate. Free of charge, of course. Then, the beefsteak, ayayay, mouthwatering...Come try it yourself, together with the great typical belgian ambiance and hospitality.
