Service was quick and food tasted great. Our waitress was also very knowledgeable about the menu and friendly. Great cheese fondue with a fair portion of cheese, potatoes, bread, and other salty sides. The lamb shank was tender and well cooked. A good spot for warming up and filling up after a long day enjoying the outdoors. Access through the basement of Hotel Julien, reservation highly recommended if not fully required.

First time came to Switzerland so wanted to try their famous dishes. We ordered lamp dishes and shared a fondue. Tasted not bad. Can try if first time having Swiss traditional cuisine.

Absolutely tender and delicious lamb racks. There is no gamey smell however you can taste the distinct lamb meat. The side dishes were pretty good too. Service was polite and prompt. The ambience is cozy and inviting. Definitely worth visiting if you are in Zermatt. Do reserve cause it is a very popular restaurant here.

It’s the best restaurant when I travel with my wife in Swiss. The lamb filet is really soft and juicy. The knee cook by wine is really nice. I will come back to visits this restaurant next time.

The restaurant’s high rating is well deserved. The staff is very friendly, welcoming and cooperative. You may even see the manager walking around and thanking the people on each table for their visit. The food is delicious and there are some interesting offerings in the menu, for example, the orange and carrot soup. There is also a kids menu. The music is local and foreign tourists will surely hear something new and different. The restaurant is below the ground level and doesn’t have an outside garden. Do not confuse it with the hotel’s restaurant above it. The restaurant is kids friendly. There is a baby chair and your little one will get pencils to draw on the kids menu.

Tasty Food but a Bit Pricey / We ordered the lamb chops; the food was delicious, though a bit on the expensive side. The restaurant is located on the basement level with a cozy atmosphere. The staff were friendly and welcoming. We decided to visit last minute without a reservation, and arriving right at opening, we managed to get a table—though it filled up quickly.

Schäferstube in Zermatt is a gem that delivers not only outstanding cuisine but also an unforgettable dining experience, thanks to its extraordinary staff. From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed with a big, warm smile that immediately made us feel at home. Our hospitality professional was exceptional. She had extensive knowledge about the menu and answered all our questions with patience and genuine enthusiasm, even though we asked so many! Her dedication to service was heartwarming, treating us with the care and attention one would expect from a family member. A highlight of the evening was the surprise birthday celebration she helped prepare. I suspect my best friend coordinated this with her, but the thoughtfulness and effort she put into it made it magical. Having traveled to multiple countries across three continents, I can confidently say this was the best treatment I have ever received. I regret not asking for her name, but to that wonderful soul who made my day: I’ll carry this memory with me forever 🫶🏼. You truly turned a great evening into a cherished memory. A big hug to you! If you’re in Zermatt, Schäferstube is a must-visit, not just for its fantastic food, but for the people who make it so special.

The menu made me really happy because I love lamb. The raclette cheese was absolutely delicious, and you can also savor some Swiss wine. I highly recommend it!

Yelp
Very nice restaurant. Would highly recommend on grilled rack of lamb and the raclette cheese. The meet is very tender and the flavor is just about right. Cheese is a bit sweet and mild, become one of my favorite cheese. Service is also wonderful.

Yelp
This restaurant features local sheep with black face. We ordered lamb tongues with vegetable-herbs and garlic oil marinade as appetizer, tongue was very tender and tasty, I loved my grilled rack of lamb with potato gratin and vegetables as main dish, it grilled to the right moment that one can taste the smoky flavor and meat flavor. I was also impressed by my wife's Braised lamb knuckle in aromatic red-wine sauce, potato gratin and vegetables sauces, it was tender and delicious. I asked waiter about the cooking style at the checkout, I thought it was French, and the answer was local, and descendent from long time ago.

Yelp
What a cute little spot in Zermatt. The ambiance was great and our server was super friendly. We ordered the lamb knuckle (which was braised perfectly) and the salmon trout which was well seasoned (I usually don't like cooked salmon). Zermatt is expensive but for the food here, I would say this is one of the more reasonably priced restaurants in Zermatt!

Yelp
Came here for the fondue and was certainly impressed with the experience. We tried the (all you can eat) Chinoise fondue, which come with 3 types of meats to cook in broth. The meats were all tender and tasted great once cooked but came out frozen around some pieces. You receive a plate of 5 different dipping sauces, pickled veggies, and fruit. We orders a couple more plates of meat. One business model that should change is the 1 hour time limit. We were basically booted because the next seating was arriving at 8:30. I don't like being rushed through my meals, but also we waited almost 15 min in the begining for someone to actually take our order so much of the ordering/tricking can occur during broad daylight.

Yelp
I came in to town as a single traveler. I walked in at about 1530 and inquired on a reservation for 1. She cheerfully accommodated my request and found me a small spot corner table that was not needed for a larger group that frequents this restaurant. Every SINGLE COURSE WAS HEAVENLY!!!! Service is absolutely 110% Food and presentation- 125% Price (for the area) ON POINT!!!

Yelp
The food was amazing and the service even better. We shared but easily we could have eaten one each of the Ribeye. It was cooked to perfection. We had the white chocolate mousse for dessert. Make reservations

Yelp
Sheep grazing on Swiss grass is a scene so ideal, that a fragment of imagination translates into reality. From the beauty of bright green Swiss grass to these gorgeous animals, these sheep get something right. And, so do the people who raise them. Schäferstube is heavily focused on local sheep farms and indicates that upon getting the menu. And, admittedly, the lamb is pretty good. It is very tender, but has zero flavor of lamb. Frankly, it could have been any other meat I've been eating and not knowing it. For those who are not big lamb lovers, this might just be the perfect entrance. It is my suspicion that the way it is marinated may be the reason for it. Also, it is extremely tender. It just happens to be not the way I enjoy lamb: fresh from the animal and flavorful. The fondue was very nice and tasty, but also can't say the cheese blend was a favorite. Extremely mild, no zesty flavors. Again, nothing wrong, just for a certain palette. The interior is cozy and classic for the region. I can't say that anything about the meal here was really memorable, but nonetheless enjoyed it. It is a matter of personal preference for us all and I think that's what it ultimately comes down to. Good restaurant and specialization in lamb is an exciting one.

Yelp
Best in town. The lamb clearly is some of the best in the world. You had me at Hello.

Carlos A.

Yelp
One of the best meals I have ever had. The lamb dishes were phenomenal. I had the BBQ platter which had three lamb options. My wife had the main lamb dish which was excellent. The meat was so flavorful and tender. I also enjoyed the raclette. I can't emphasize how much my wife and I enjoyed this place. Our server Tamara was very nice.

Yelp
Amazing all around. Best lamb I have ever had. Got indian dumplings and indian lamb. Both amazing. Great restaurant.

Yelp
This is a gem of a restaurant underneath the Romantik Julen Hotel. Reservations are a must, as everything related to Romantik Hotel is in high demand. Still, we lucked out and upon arriving, and being informed that the restaurant was full, the manager scratched her head and told us that they had been waiting for a reservation for almost thirty minutes and they could seat us. Glad they did because it was a memorable dinner. We started with a Valais Syrah wine, relatively heavy but an excellent accompaniment to the Raclette and salad. My partner had a wonderful Valais organic fresh water fish cooked to perfection, and I had a most delicious Entrecote of Valais Lamb, stuffed with wonderful garni. This was probably the best lamb dish I've had in over 20 years. Superb. No... Outstanding. Delicious. We ended the dinner with sorbet of peach and lemon. Besides impeccable service, it is obvious the staff here knows what they're doing in terms of pleasing their customers. A most memorable evening.

Jason N.

Yelp
Below the Romantik Hotel Julen you'll find some very good food that is just what your hungry stomach will be demanding after a day on the slopes. We stayed in the hotel and and so we enjoyed getting food delivered to our suite. Back-to-back nights of having the grilled lamb chops proved their spectacular flavor is not an accident. They are from the restaurant's farm and run approximately $50 for the entree but they are delicious. They are cooked perfectly and are plump and succulent. Other favorites we found were on the starter menu: 1- a large fried "ravioli" (looked more like a huge empanada) stuffed with sauerkraut and chunks of bacon atop a zucchini doused with a delectable brown sauce, and 2- a cheesy spinach-y "dumpling" atop a gentle tomato sauce (this dish was a special for one of the nights we ate here and is not on the regular menu). Both of these were wonderful and were prime examples of elevated comfort cuisine. The soups were a bit hit or miss- one night was delicious and the other mediocre. The dessert we tried-- the slice of raspberry quark- was good but not great. Note that if you stay at the Julen, you have the option for rolling a prix fixe into your rate and it is a good deal in terms of price; however, we did this last year when we stayed here and we found the food mediocre and the service a bit not so good. This year, we skipped the prix fixe and enjoyed the food we ordered (a la carte) much better. It was more expensive but much more enjoyable to eat. As I said, we enjoyed our dinners upstairs in private, so I cannot speak about the service; however, if it is on par with the morning crew who serves breakfast, you'll have no complaints.

Yelp
We ate two nights in a row here because once was not enough. We ate from the menu of local specialties prepared with local ingredients and it was, quite simply, stunning. The hay soup with air dried meat tasted like Switzerland itself -- pasture, stone, snow, rain, sun. They let us split the main course between us -- first night we had the rack of lamb, second night the leg. Both were prepared on a wood fired grill and I have never eaten such complexly flavored lamb (but not a hint of mutton). Exquisite. And drinking local wine was such a delight. According to our waitress the Swiss keep all their wine for themselves and I can see why. Then we ordered an apricot schnapps to share but it was so good K drank most of it herself! A total dream of a restaurant, and the family working there together all clearly love and are proud of their beautiful little stuebe.

Yelp
I am ba-a-a-a-a-a-ankers for this lamb dominated restaurant! We had the Raclette for an appetizer, but subbed the potatoes for bread and it was really delicious. A pretty mild cheese with a great taste and texture. For our main dish we ordered the Lamb Grigio, which was literally the best lamb I have ever had. Tender, well seasoned, and perfectly cooked. The service was good, though I was not a fan of the Sommelier's suggestions. We got our food super quickly and had the chocolate cake with berries for dessert - small portion but very tasty.

Yelp
Excellent service and delicious food. My kids grew to love fondue while in Europe and this place was a highlight. Their family story is a bonus to how well they do things in all of their establishments. I also so appreciate the focus on children and always providing a kids menu and choices. Traveling with kids is complicated and having a restaurant that caters to their tummies is awesome.

Yelp
Amazing local family owned restaurant. Farm to table. Fondue, Rackette, venison were sublime.

Debbie H.

Yelp
Best Lamb I have ever had!! They bring it to you in 2 portions so your food doesn't get cold. Talk about service!

Kris Y.

Yelp
I highly recommend everyone who travels to Zermatt to try this restaurant. Paul took very good care of us and so did our waitress Daniela. Each table has a little book about the history of the hotel and restaurant. It is a family owned business which provided the personal attention one would only find from a family owned restaurant. Our first visit to Schaferstube (correct spelling) we tried the Raclette and Cheese Fondue which we're both delicious. The Cheese Fondue was 25CHF for a very large portion. The Raclette was all you can eat for 40CHF. The Raclette also came with a cured meat plate and a very nice fruit plate for dessert. We liked it so much we went back to try the lamb which is what they are known for. Paul raises the sheep up the hill in Zermatt. I sampled each plate from our party of six and enjoyed each one. The plates I sampled included the lamb sausage, lamb chops, lamb knuckle and lamb burger. All of which were excellent.

Yelp
We wanted cheese fondue, so asked few Swiss people for good restaurant, and this place was recommended. We ordered Salad Composition with cheese fondue. Salad was tasty and filling with assortment of cucumber, red onion, celery, pear (could be pineapple). Cheese fondue was good without overpowering cheese taste. I was too full to finish it, but they gave us more than enough bread pieces. The place was booked with reservations, but we got the table without reservation as we arrived 10 minutes before opening. I heard people coming back for more of good food. The place is very cozy and welcoming. I can see why the place gets booked out.

Yelp
Family favorite on our Europe trip! The BEST lamb we've ever eaten. Interesting family story with tiny take home books on the table, which are one of my favorite "souvenirs" (after my cowbell!). COZY, WARM, friendly. This place is an experience. The owner came around to talk to all the tables, and he even told us "tell your server if you want more meat." They love what they do, and it shows.

Philly S.

Yelp
Excellent food and ambiance. I got two full portions of succulent lamb for the price of one. Of course that price was $55, but the average hamburger in Zermatt is $30 so that's actually a steal.

Evelyn B.

Yelp
Amazing food, ambience and service! Best dinner in zermatt! Excellent wild game, delicious raclette and outstanding desert.

Brian B.

Yelp
If we lived here we'd be regulars. They have a great selection of regional and seasonal specialties, including local game and lamb from the owner's herd of black-nosed sheep. As with Swiss cuisine in general there's a lot of meat. Vegetarians can of course find lots of cheese and potatoes (Raclette is really good here), but vegans won't find much to eat aside from salads. We went twice in a week and would go again if we could. I suggest you make reservations although we were seated without them, but we are lucky people.

Audrey T.

Yelp
Expensive place, 9 CHF for a bottle of water. The cheese fondue was good. I wasn't blown away, but I enjoyed it.

Matt Z.

Yelp
Where to start! I have been fortunate enough to have eaten the best lamb across the U.S. and nothing compares to this. If you are in Zermatt and do not come here you have made a horrible mistake, best lamb ever!

David B.

Yelp
This is our second night in three here. Not surprising they specialize in lamb dishes since they own a sheep farm. Great service, great food, great prices.

Rishika K.

Yelp
Food here is amazing! We tried the saffron gnocchi and cheese fondue. Both were delectable. In addition, the service was wonderful! They have a great wine selection. The house merlot is incredible! Highly recommend this place!
