On the Grid : Umspannwerk

"The abandoned red brick building is a former electric power transformation substation built in the 1920s. It is one of the many industrial buildings that the architect Hans Heinrich Müller has planed and realized. During his time at the power plants of Berlin he was responsible for a couple of substations, that have left their mark on Berlin. Its style is a mixture of radical, expressiv modernism with redbrick Gothic. Today it is out of order and you can just walk around and imagine what it could be used for in the future." - Schauschau

We are visiting Berlin from Scotland. We walked in without booking with 2 adults and 2 kids in our party. The food, the service and the ambience were just perfect. Presentation was excellent too. Best meal we've had in Berlin and up there with anywhere else for that matter. Highly recommended 👌.

We came here for an event and we were very satisfied with the whole restaurant. The food was exquisite and the staff catered to all of our needs. The design is spectacular and I would love to see this place again outside of an event. Top quality food and a lovely venue in the heart of Berlin.

A friend suggested we come here for dinner. I'm so glad she did. Wait-staff professional and kind, food delicious ability to dine inside or out. I enjoyed sitting out being comfortable. We had a great time. I had the fish for the main dessert creme brulee, which was very good

Very cool interior converted from an industrial factory / power transformer station. Staff was friendly and they had a great selection of cocktails and wine. Kitchen visible from tables. The menu had a mix of standard fare like pasta and burgers but also some German dishes plus the seasonal ones too. Food was excellent, came quickly and nicely plated as well. The restaurant is in the same building as a small theater which looked cool.

Great Location. Kinda unique as in the oldest power distribution facility in Berlin that was reused as a restaurant. Food had a very good quality. Berlin style friendly waitresses and a good variety of Digestives. So all in all a nice place to be.

Umspannwerk Ost is the restaurant that is part of the 'Kriminal Theatre'. So a lot of people go there to eat something before the show or have a drink afterwards. But the restaurant is also more than worth a visit if you don't attend a show. The food is more than decent, the prices very fair and the service is fast and friendly. The best part, however, is the whole atmosphere and design of the restaurant. They've done a splendid job integrating the restaurant in the interior of an old factory. A great place I would definitely recommend.

Yelp
We went to this restaurant with a large party, and the service was excellent, the kitchen is open to guest room, and you can also sit at the bar. The meals were tasty, and price absolutely fair.

Yelp
If you're in a mood for traditional German cuisine, this is a place to get it! The restaurant is a little out of the way from all the touristy places in Mitte, and you'll get a glimpse of a residential part of the city, Friedrichshain, that most tourists don't get to see. The building has an interesting history which used to be an electric power transformer station, and depending on the evening, it offers entertainment venues as well. The restaurant is renovated impeccably with a beautiful open space. We had a great table right next to the window on the balcony and had a great view of the restaurant. The food was as good as expected. We ordered Schweineschnitzel, Argentinian rump steak, and duck, and everything was cooked to perfection. The only disappointing thing was the quality of the steak which was subpar, and for such a nice restaurant, I expected they would serve better quality meats. The service was excellent ... the best we've had in Berlin during this trip, and although we were the only table with a child, I appreciated that the waitress was interacting with our son and treated him like a patron instead of ignoring him as in other restaurants. Overall, it was a great dining experience!
