28 Best Places to Spend Christmas Around the World | Condé Nast Traveler

"I book a table here specifically for andesteg—a traditional Danish holiday plate of crispy, succulent roast duck with prunes and apples—because nothing says December in Denmark quite like it." - Caitlin Morton

Google
We followed our hotel staff’s recommendations and came here for authentic Danish dishes. Tried the fried pork belly and roasted duck, loved both of then and it’s so nice trying these local dishes. We also tried the local beer, seasonal xmas ale was surprisingly good with xmas spices favor, very nice addition to the main dishes.

Google
A comforting taste of classic Danish food—rich sauce, tender meat, and perfectly simple potatoes. The atmosphere feels warm and inviting, made even better by good company around the table. Honest, hearty, and quietly special.

It was the first restaurant that we went to as soon as we landed in Copenhagen. We ordered traditional danish Christmas food. The staff were really accommodating and polite.

I lunched at Vita's restaurant and tasted the stegt flæsk, danish national dish, with a large Carlsberg beer. I enjoyed it a lot. It was very tasty and didn't feel like too much fat at all despite the fact that it's fried pork. Very good dish and experience. Service was great as well. Recommend.

Google
Wonderful Danish evening and was recommended by our tour guide. I am gluten free and they did everything to make sure my food was safe and still able to enjoy the experience fully. Great restaurant with good pricing. Would highly recommend and especially for those that are gluten free.

Google
A very nice ambient restaurant in the center of the city. They have the typical dishes from Denmark. And you could see a wide variety of options. The plates are good, fair in taste but still delicious. And they also have a wide variety of local beer options. The staff are nice

Google
The fried pork is quite traditional yet hard to knife cut or bite. The half duck leg was looked like pork leg which is a fun experience to me. I like the duck leg, the gravy is nice paired with dry part of the leg, and the sweet on side makes the plate complete, in my opinion. It serves with potatoes, one is original and one is caramelised of its skin. The pork slice looks nice but not easy to eat with. I’d say the best part of the meal is exploring the dining experience. It seems not easy to sort out how Danes in the old days enjoyed the roast pork. Perhaps there’s a way to enjoy, it just my friend and I didn’t know the secret of it.

Yelp
Beautiful place and food. Excellent service! This restaurant deserves 5 starts across the board. The owner recommended Grillet laks which is Grilled salmon served with sautéed seasonal vegetables and tarragon sauce. The salmon it's self was cooked perfectly. Gently grilled on the outside and moist on the inside, and vegetables were perfectly seasoned. The sauce on the fish was an excellent touch. All in all, it was worth the $. He also recommended Carlsberg Pilsner. Beer that is popular in Denmark. I was tempted to get another one! And finally the desert. Wow, I would fly back to Copenhagen just for this! He recommended the Gammeldags æblekage (apple strudel), it was divine. Thank you for the excellent food and service. 10/10.

Yelp
The girlies wanted steak and this was the only restaurant in the area that was serving steak at 11PM on a Wednesday. Ambiance was pleasant. Service was fast but we were also the last table. Food came out in about 10 minutes. We ordered 4 steaks medium rare and they were all undercooked. We didn't send them back because we were hungry and we didn't want them over cooked either. It came out to $52 per person for a steak and bev.

Yelp
Very good lunch special and enjoy the fish combo and curry fish is so different. We sit outside and enjoy the street view. The service is good and we enjoy the service by the waiter.

Yelp
Our first stop off the plane after dropping off our bags, barely aclimated to the weather let alone familiar with the lingo or social formalities. The wait staff were all pleasant, but very busy. From a one time out of towners experience: don't plan a visit here if you are in any form of a hurry, like maybe have plans to tour the city, on American time or otherwise. If you come at the wrong time this could be all you get to see for your "first stop" in Denmark. Food was good and I do recommend for a meal, but the wait we experienced between being acknowledged and seated to plates cleared and the bill brought out was excruciating leisurely. They have a cute little outdoor section 1/4 block away from their restaurant kitchen that all the staff serves, which was probably a lifesaver during the pandemic, now I feel like this adds to their processing time considerably.

Yelp
Excellent place to go for authentic Danish food and friendly wait staff. We had dinner one night inside the restaurant, cozy ambiance, candles, pleasantly chatty waitress who gave us some recommendations for our trip. I got a classic danish dish with deep fried ham and potatoes with parsley gravy. They gave me a sample as it isn't a dish that all tourists like, and I thought it was delicious. Basically if you like bacon, you would like it! We came back for the classic smorgasbord open-face sandwich for lunch later in the trip and they were delicious. The only bummer was the patio have a lot of construction noise and smells that afternoon, but it probably would not be like again. I would recommend it!

Yelp
Pretty good food. The inside of the restaurant looks on the fancy side but the prices weren't excessive. There are candles and white tablecloths. The beer selection was good. I had a blonde. For dinner I had weinerschnitzle. It was pretty good, not the best I've had though. It came with a small tureen of gravy and potatoes. Overall, it was pretty good.

Yelp
I was walking back to my hotel from the Kastellet and found Vita along the way. I found the staff very attentive and friendly, and the food delicious and modestly priced. I had old fashioned roast duck with prunes, apples, homemade cucumber relish, red cabbage relish, white potatoes and caramelled potatoes. The gravy was a bit cold, but tasty.

Yelp
We ate here for New Years Eve dinner. Because of last minute travel changes due to the pandemic we ended up in Copenhagen without dinner reservations. Even though it was fully packed, the entire staff was really friendly and worked magic to get us in and made a table for us. We didn't know anything about this restaurant, but our expectations were exceeded. The meal was great and we plan to return the next time in Denmark.

Yelp
As a previous reviewer mentioned, Vita is truly the perfect place to get your first meal in Copenhagen! The restaurant itself is housed in a former royal pharmacy from the 1800s and has a quaint historic European charm. The menu offers classic Danish dishes until the wee hours of the morn--up to 3 a.m. (Hello, jet lag!) We shared a bowl of the lobster bisque and an order of stegtflæsk, the national dish of crispy slices of pork with small boiled potatoes and creamy parsley sauce. Both were deliciously prepared. We left merrily satisfied. I can see why this place has been around forever!

Yelp
This place was good and back a few blocks from the main tourist street. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. I had the Vita stew and my husband had the crispy pork with parsley sauce a supposed Danish dish. As per the menu we asked for a sample as it says it's not everyone's taste. It's delicious, it's crispy bacon. It is however rich and I knew I couldn't do a whole meal of it so I had the stew. The stew was a thick rich tomato and beef broth. The sausages got to be too much so I had to pull those out but the pork roast pieces were my favorite. We both really enjoyed our food.

Yelp
Really good Danish food. Was surprised by the quality and taste. Really tasteful and crisp. Had the pork and it was amazing. Opening hours is amazing.

Yelp
Highly recommended, esp. the old fashion roasted duck. Place is cozy and staff here are nice.

Yelp
Was looking for something just off of Nyhavn and this was a very lovely discovery. Definitely worth the couple mins walk to get away from the crazy tourist prices of Nyhavn! Vita was very reasonably priced and delicious and the service was good too. I am glad I found it!

Tom M.

Yelp
Great location. Building is historical, service was engaging and efficient and food was as good as it gets. Prices were good for CPH. Try the national dish. It's basically a plate of thick, tasty incredible bacon with a nice sauce on the side. This place is spot on

Yelp
Cheap Food for an expensive price. The Ambient is Really nice but it seems to be a Tourist Trap.

Yelp
Simple Danish food, well prepared and presented. Very friendly and helpful service, good value for the money, nice ambiance. A perfect place to go for your first meal in CPH, when you've just stepped off the plane and aren't quite ready to "go out". Easy walk from the Wake Up hotel, not too touristy, accepts credit cards, serves until 10, which is a bit later than other local places...

Yelp
I picked this restaurant because it was open past midnight and had reasonable reviews. It met or exceeded expectations. I expected a pub, but this place had full-on white tablecloths, candles, and well-dressed wait staff - at 1:00 am. Impressive. The food was very good, but not great. I love rich, complex flavors, and this did not quite deliver. I had the duck and the fried pork. The meat was of good quality and good flavor (although both were perhaps a bit overcooked), but the sauces and sides that accompanied them were a bit bland (compared with others I've had). The flavors were very good - they just weren't memorable. I would highly recommend this spot if you're looking for a late dinner; if you're eating at "normal" times there are probably better places to try (at least, that is my plan).

Yelp
Very nice restaurant! Should have better reviews. I had the duck and my wife had the liver and the duck must have been the best duck I've ever had!!!

Yelp
Good food, great service, open late. We wanted food but realized with the time change it was about to be 10pm. Copenhagen, as metropolitan as it is, pretty much shuts down at that time unless you count bars, casinos, and the gentlemen's clubs. We were hoping for burgers or traditional Danish food. Vitas was perfect for this. I had the Christmas dinner. Which included perfectly cooked 1/2 duck with rendered fat and crispy skin. THe brown gravy was a bit bland, but nothing a little salt and pepper couldn't fix. It came with potatoes, cabbage, prunes, and pickled cucumber. Everything was tasty but the portions were so big we had to take home leftovers My guy had the meat, meat, and a few more meats stew with pomme frites. What I thought was carrot was small Vienna sausages. The flavors were well balanced. Efficient ad friendly service. Well priced for the portion size. 546 for 2 beers, 2 flavored mineral waters, and 2 of the pricier entrees
