LU Cocina Michoacana – Morelia, Mexico - Gastro Obscura

"The 2010 addition of Mexican cuisine as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage included the example of “the Michoacán paradigm.” The state of Michoacán’s regional culinary traditions were singled out due to its feature of having specific dishes assigned to holidays and life events. The xanducatas de novia y de novio, for example, are distinct versions of xanducata, a thick mole-like sauce with a pronounced minty note, prepared for a bride and groom. LU, lead by Michoacana chef Lucero Soto, is one of the few restaurants in Morelia, the state capital, where singles and long-married couples alike can try the xanducatas. Located in the lower floor of the central Hotel Casino, LU is known for its commitment to local Michoacán ingredients, including trout from the many surrounding lakes and farms and the state’s famous avocados. Atápakua, another sauce similar to xanducata but usually reserved for funerals, can also be found here. So can the state’s famous cheeses, such as cotija and adobera, along with more stereotypical Michoacán fare such as carnitas (pork) and the tamale-like uchepos and corundas. To wash it all down, LU showcases beers from Morelia-based brewery La Brü, which feature ingredients such as blue corn. It’s rare to find an upscale restaurant serving Michoacán’s cuisine. The majority of Morelia restaurants favor auteur cuisine, while regional food is left to greasy-spoon and diner-type establishments. With its combination of local ingredients, traditional recipes, and modern techniques, LU represents a unique fusion. Know Before You Go The restaurant has distinct menus for breakfast and lunch/dinner." - linkogecko

This Is the Best Eating Town in Mexico

"A network of lakes across Michoacán means Morelia has access to spanking-fresh fish. Try it alfresco as a green ceviche at Morelia’s LU Cocina Michoacana, a restaurant that prides itself on using local trout." - Javier Cabral

Nice decor but quite a bit of street noise, Service was polite but otherwise lacking. Had the filled peppers to start, then the squash soup, with the jicama enchiladas for the entree. The appetizer was nice, the soup and entree were not.

We had a delicious meal and excellent service, all at a reasonable price. We started with a delightfully tasty and sweet hibiscus salad. This was followed by tacos with charales; if you like sardines, you will enjoy these lightly fried, savory fish. We finished with red trout roasted over coals, served with atapakua, a peanut, honey and mint sauce that added great flavor to the well-prepared dish. This restaurant has been among our favorites in central Mexico and very highly recommended!

A lovely restaurant across from the Cathedral in Morelia. Highlighting Mexican produce and culinary ways. Highly recommended

We went to lunch at around 12:20pm today, they only started their lunch menu at 1pm. So we had about 40 min to kill, so we ordered two margaritas with guacamole. The margaritas were too sweet and the guacamole was decent. Then we ordered the second round of margaritas to specific that less sweet, they were still way too sweet! At lunch time, my friend ordered a salad with chicken and it was nothing special and more weird taste side. I asked for fish and the server told me they’re out of fish at the moment, so I ordered pork belly with white mole sauce. The pork belly was way too dry and I couldn’t even eat it, except a smaller portion was moisture enough to cut through it. About my pork belly, everything was horrible. The server didn’t even care to ask if everything was okay!!! We won’t recommend this place again to all my friends, truly disappointed!!! We had been there so many times before, this time did remind me to stop going….what a waste of money & time!

The ceviche presentation was excellent, the blue tostadas were delicious. The ceviche had excess of lemon and salt. The main dishes were flavorless. Fish and angus beef. The fish only had one mushroom. The server and staff were excellent. I recommend everyone to leave downtown. Check my other postings.

The restaurant offers decent food with a variety of tasty dishes. Its location is quite impressive, situated right next to the main church and a beautiful park, which adds to the dining experience. However, it's worth noting that the prices are a little on the high side. While this place might not be the top dining experience in town, it's certainly worth recommending. The combination of good food and a great location makes it a nice option for those visiting the area or looking for a meal with a view.

We enjoyed sitting outside facing the street - beautiful taking in the park square and the early morning sun. The coffee was good but our breakfast was only okay but we stuck to safe choices - a tostada and huevos mexicanos. We could have ordered better - will try to go back and try more of the menu. Edit: we went back for chilaquiles and regional dishes - all excellent.

Yelp
Food is decent and environment is pretty relaxing, perfect for a late breakfast or late lunch. We had gone twice in one day. What we ordered: *cappuchino - very cute and tasty *macha latte - a little on the sweet side *omlette chipotle - pretty good, added a few eggs on the side and bacon *huevos con chorizo - very tasty, added a few eggs *pork belly - delicious *Corte de la casa - pretty good steak.

Yelp
Overall experience was nice! We had a party of 10 and it was around 11am on a Monday. Service was very friendly and attentive. Food in general was great and we left satisfied. If you're looking for a bite near the centro and in the middle of city this is a great spot. A lot of options the area.

Yelp
Excellent location. Love all their selection of chilaquiles. Mini pastries with a hot chocolate is a must.

Yelp
I primarily came here for the cafe de olla. I was not disappointed at all. The cafe de olla comes with your sugar and cinnamon and coffee mix on a separate plate so that you can make it to your liking. It was delicious!! My husband and I came for brunch, I had the Moreliano omelette that is accompanied by uchepo and a creamy sauce. I really enjoyed it. To drink I had a green juice, made fresh with all the healthy fibers. I recommend this spot to everyone looking for good food close to the historic center. The prices are average for this area.

Yelp
The service was very slow the food was good though.I said I wants a coke and it came at the end when I was done getting my food. if you are inpatient you should not come here.

Yelp
I always come here whenever I'm in town, it's peaceful, you have the perfect view of the cathedral and the staff is friendly. I've been coming here for the past six years and each time i try something different, this past visit i tried the Alfredo pasta. The pasta was given with a huge portion which i liked cause i was starving lmao but it's perfect to share with two people! The only thing i didn't like was the addition of micro greens, they didn't need to be on there and i removed them completely. We got a side order of French fries which were perfect to share at the table, especially for my two year old sister! The fries aren't seasoned with salt, they are seasoned with lemon pepper so do expect that & the side order of beans was a huge portion as well and we were not able to finish it. This place is great because it is in the open, you get an amazing view, live musicians and singers are always near, there's an ice cream shop around the corner for dessert and the staff is always friendly! That being said, sometimes the staff will leave for a long period of time and its hard to ask for extra items like ketchup, getting other drinks or dishes. At times i had to go inside the restaurant and ask for my waiter lol. But none the less i still enjoy this place!

Yelp
I was looking for a place where I could get delicious authentic style food and have a great view. Found that here! Truly lives up to being a UNESCO site. The food is full of culture. The hotel is great too.

Yelp
Food was good! Slow service but oh well. They don't accept cards .. they do as you ask great server.

Yelp
I was a little apprehensive about eating at Lu Cocina because it was poised to be a total tourist trap; a large patio hotel restaurant overlooking the city's historic center. But - was proven to be wrong! My wife and I split a bowl of la tarasca to start (black bean soup) that was excellently spiced and cheesed-up. My wife ordered a chiles en nogata-esque dish - not stuffed with beef or covered with pomegranate seeds, but was covered in an amazing-but-not-too-sweet sauce. I ordered a rack of lambs served over a rich, dark, slightly-sweet sauce. The lamb was a bit over medium-rare but was otherwise good. Our server was super-helpful, and service overall was prompt. In terms of decor and location, you really can't beat the patio on a warm night.

Yelp
Try this place out! In a really nice location. We sat for a bit after eating and just enjoyed the view. Food was good. They brought us bread with sauces before our meal. The waiter Jaime was extremely nice and helped us with choices on the menu. They also offered the menu in English! They accept debit cards here.

Yelp
I came to eat here with my two family members because the reviews here are are 4 stars or above. Since we have had food all over and have come to Morelia often, we found the food at Lu Cocina to be lackluster. I ordered the omelette with chipotle sauce and the presentation was pretty ugly. The omelette was excessively covered with "chipotle" sauce and on top of a bolillo cut in half with an arugula salad with weird dressing . My 2 family members ordered Chilaquiles Enchorizados. We asked the waiter to have the chorizo cooked so it was fully fried, but the cook did not do that. The tortillas were soggy for those two plates and came with frijoles. So one star removed for taste and aesthetically unpleasing. 2nd star removed for not removing the plate that my family member did not eat from the bill and I'mbeing very generous. It's not worth the price and will not be returning.

Yelp
This place has a great view of the cathedral and all the action nearby. The food honestly to us was just okay! They have wifi which is a savior to a lame foreign white chick like me lol and they made my polo ma reallly strong, everyone at the table could smell the alcohol! Made for a great mid-day sip. Lol

Yelp
Beautiful spot to sit and people watch, the view of the cathedral across the street is also quite breathtaking. Food was delicious, the pork shank tacos was one of our favorite dishes during our week in Morelia, the mini sopes (appetizer) were also exceptional. Cocktails were very good as well. One of our plates came out bordering on lukewarm, which was a bit of a let down, but otherwise a great experience.

Yelp
We had an amazing dinner at Lu Cochins and I especially enjoyed their fresh take on the mole.

Yelp
We really loved this restaurant, it was very clean, the staff was very attentive, and most importantly food was delicious! I would probably be here every weekend if I lived closed by. We had soup, fresh fish with veggies and enchiladas. 10 stars!

Yelp
Hands down, it is worth every peso! I had the lamb zapote and my friend had chilles. Both dishes were absolutely amazing. The lamb I had was the winner as the zapote sauce brought a sweetness to the perfectly cooked lamb. We also had the jicama rollitos as an appetizer and I HIGHLY recommend those as well.

Yelp

Yelp
This is a great place to eat a nice meal in the heart of Centro Historico! My favorite meal was the breakfast we had. The omelets and the Chilaquiles here are good with fresh ingredients that reflect the taste of Michoacan. You can sit inside and take in the great historic architecture or sit outside and take in the hustle and bustle of Morelia. Eat, relax, enjoy, and they will probably take some time to bring the check so you can keep enjoying! P.S. Morelia I miss you!

Yelp
Delicious hot chocolate. Awesome (and filling!) aporreadillo. Amazing location with great service. Definitely drop in for breakfast and/or a afternoon bite!

Yelp
The shrimp with mango sauce and rice entree was a little bit too sweet for my taste but nonetheless it was tasty. The carne ranchera entree, guacamole and chips were delicious. Staff was attentive and catered to our large groups both times we dined here during our stay in Patzcuaro. I would dine here again.

Yelp
We actually stayed here. The restaurant is part of the Hotel Casino. We ordered the black bean soup, pollo mole blanco and the 3 course preset meal. Bean soup: good 7 Pollo mole: good 7. Needed more mole sauce 3 course meal : Fish tartar: good 8. Salmon mole: delicious 9 Bun cake: just ok. 6. Not impressive The 3 course was accompanied by 3 shots of mezcal which were unique and tasty. Would go somewhere else if there was a next time in Morelia.

Yelp
We ordered the tasting menu for 274 pesos which included a wonderful spinach salad and an excellent squash soup. Unfortunately the main of chicken breast was dry and the dessert was a cake that was dry with less than a teaspoon of ice-cream. We also ordered the wine pairing. The menu showed 4 whites and 4 reds in their wine pairing section of the menu as it is not really a wine pairing. Actually it is only two glasses of wine of their choice for about 160 pesos. Their choice was a merlot. All in all very disappointing. Dr. Don Anderson

Yelp
This is the problem here for breakfast is you order coffee and that's it. No refills. The food was all right but nothing to write home about.
google avatar

Alex M.

Yelp
The place is great because of its location and it really is a treat. The menu is limited to a degree but what they make is wonderful. Definitely try the Chilaquiles and the Cafe de Olla. Next time we visit this will definitely be a place to stop.

Mau N.

Yelp
Chocolate Is nothing especial, the breakfast was bad and four stars for the service, I don't recommend it.

Filiberto B.

Yelp
Excellent plates with foods representative of all regions in the state of Michoacán. Great use of local produce and the mezcal was amazing.
