I came to visit friends who have been living in Chiquila (where the ferry boat leaves) for the past 6 months. They have also stayed on Holbox numerous times. They've tried a lot of the nicer restaurants on the island and recommended another spot that I ate at first. That place was good, but this place that they had been wanting to try, blew the 1st place away.
This might have seriously been one of the best meals I've had this year anywhere and it cost me less than $20. It is one of the pricier options on Holbox, but when converting money it was so very worth it. It's around the corner from the main plaza and chances are you might never walk past it so keep your eyes peeled.
I order a semi-local Mexican imperial stout that was super delicious.
While waiting the server brought us some shot glass sized drinks of some kind of green stuff mixed with water. Quite refreshing. Also served with the meal were small bowls of some kind of soup. They were super tasty. I could have eaten 2 more bowls. Sadly, I also wasn't listening when the server told us what it was. I think the soup as well as rolls come with your entree.
For my entree I got the shrimp with ancho chiles. It was a large number of head on shrimp covered in this amazing red sauce on a bed of potatoes. There was candied ancho chile on top as well as a zucchini on the side. Seriously delicious. Friends ordered the octopus and said it was excellent, one of the best versions they've had. I tried the kids fish and patatas...the fish was perfectly cooked and incredibly moist.
I would have loved to stay for the dessert menu, but the mosquitos were terrible on the patio. They might want to run a couple of fans out there to combat the blood suckers. Other than the bugs, the meal was perfection. I can't wait to go back.
FYI- the chef is from Mexico City and the food is quite creative with pea foam and others kinds of interesting playful foods. Casual fine dining. My favorite.
