We had booked a package via Halong Tours, and they had selected the Rex Hotel as our base. We were to use this hotel three times during the course of our stay. The hotel is situated in the heart of the 'Old Quarter', and this is where you want to be to experience the 'Real Hanoi'. The Rex appears to be reletively new, clean and neat, with a crew of excellent staff! |It is located just a little way from the expansive lake and a 25 min stroll to 'train St.'|During our 3 visits we had different rooms. Some had only partial views, but the rooms themselves were excellent. Clean, neat, and included all required amenities. Bathroom super, with a good selection of requirements. Clean towels provided every day and the room itself cleaned and tidied. All electrical points worked and coffee making facilities provided, though if you prefer 'western' coffee to that of Vietnamese, then bring your own.|The Hotel restaurant is located on the top floor. Lifts end on floor below, and one has to climb some stairs, past the recreation room, with pool/snooker table, and the hotel pool.|The restaurant has expansive views over the old quarter, and on clear day one can see some of the fabulous, magnificent suspension bridges that are a feature of this country.. For breakfast, there is an excellent buffet, and extra items can be orderd from the kitchen. Coffee, both local and western is plentiful. It is a lovely, relaxing area, with fabulous staff who seem to genuinly enjoy their role. The evening dinner menu is good, though we only used it once - late back from a tour - and almost closed, but they were happy to accomodate us!||We can heartily recommend this hotel a good base from which to explore the Old Qluarter.
