How to Tackle Southeast Asia, Country by Country

"One day you’re holding on for dear life to the edge of a cyclo as you zip through Hanoi, the next you’re knocking on doors at traditional H’mong houses in a village in the Vietnamese highlands. Add kayaking in Hạ Long Bay (above), a history tour of Saigon, and a cocktail or two at the war-era landmark Rex Hotel, and now you have a full itinerary."

We were in a group checking in. Although it does not have a big grand entrance appeal, the hotel makes it with good, polite, patient service. The rooms are not grand size but adequate enough. Clean, well stocked and neat. The breakfast spread steals the show. Love that the dining placee is right at the top floor. Greeted by the hardworking service team in which the cheerful lady manager is always looking out for any help. She is also serving at the same time! Great breakfast buffet not to be missed.

Review: Rex Hotel Hanoi - A Disappointing Stay |Overall Rating: Bad||My stay at the Rex Hotel Hanoi was profoundly disappointing, characterized by a shocking lack of basic hospitality and subpar service that significantly detracted from our visit. Despite its convenient location, I strongly advise against booking this hotel, as better options with superior service undoubtedly exist nearby.||Morning Arrival and Unresponsive Staff:||We arrived at the hotel around 6:00 AM following a long night train journey from Sapa. Understandably, we were exhausted and simply needed to freshen up before our scheduled Ninh Binh tour. We requested towels to do so, but our plea for basic amenities was met with indifference—it essentially "fell on deaf ears." We were forced to directly approach a cleaner to procure some small towels, highlighting the staff's failure to assist with a very simple request.||Rudeness Regarding Basic Refreshments:||While waiting for our tour driver (due in 10 minutes), we politely asked if we could quickly grab some minimal refreshments for takeaway, such as fruit, bread, or a bottle of water. Instead of offering a small kindness to weary travelers, we were rudely informed that we would have to pay for breakfast. The rigid refusal to even provide a single bottle of water, given our circumstances and imminent departure, demonstrated a complete absence of goodwill and hospitality.||Luggage Mishandling and Neglect: ||Before leaving for our tour, we requested that our luggage be moved to our room once it became available at 2:00 PM. Upon returning at 8:00 PM that evening, we were dismayed to find our luggage still languishing in the lobby, not properly secured or placed in the room as requested hours earlier. This neglect of our belongings is an unacceptable failure of basic hotel service.||Failure to Address Concerns:||Following these repeated issues, I requested to speak with the manager to share our experience. I was told the manager was unavailable. Despite waiting for the next three days, no one from the management team bothered to reach out or address our complaints. This complete failure to follow up shows a clear disregard for guest satisfaction and a lack of accountability.||The Verdict:||Is it worth it? I do not think so.|We have experienced far better service at 3-star hotels, proving that the issues here are not related to price point but a fundamental flaw in the hotel's operational standards and attitude toward guests.|Just do not book this hotel, no matter how convenient its location may seem. There are demonstrably better hotels in the area that will offer the level of service and respect travelers deserve.||I hope this review captures all the key points of your experience. Would you like me to find some higher-rated hotels near the Rex Hotel's location in Hanoi, or perhaps draft a concise email to the hotel management?

We had booked a package via Halong Tours, and they had selected the Rex Hotel as our base. We were to use this hotel three times during the course of our stay. The hotel is situated in the heart of the 'Old Quarter', and this is where you want to be to experience the 'Real Hanoi'. The Rex appears to be reletively new, clean and neat, with a crew of excellent staff! |It is located just a little way from the expansive lake and a 25 min stroll to 'train St.'|During our 3 visits we had different rooms. Some had only partial views, but the rooms themselves were excellent. Clean, neat, and included all required amenities. Bathroom super, with a good selection of requirements. Clean towels provided every day and the room itself cleaned and tidied. All electrical points worked and coffee making facilities provided, though if you prefer 'western' coffee to that of Vietnamese, then bring your own.|The Hotel restaurant is located on the top floor. Lifts end on floor below, and one has to climb some stairs, past the recreation room, with pool/snooker table, and the hotel pool.|The restaurant has expansive views over the old quarter, and on clear day one can see some of the fabulous, magnificent suspension bridges that are a feature of this country.. For breakfast, there is an excellent buffet, and extra items can be orderd from the kitchen. Coffee, both local and western is plentiful. It is a lovely, relaxing area, with fabulous staff who seem to genuinly enjoy their role. The evening dinner menu is good, though we only used it once - late back from a tour - and almost closed, but they were happy to accomodate us!||We can heartily recommend this hotel a good base from which to explore the Old Qluarter.

We had a wonderful experience at Rex Hotel. The rooms were very clean and comfortable, and the staff were incredibly friendly. The food at the hotel was delicious and offered a wide variety of options. The location is also excellent—right near the city center with many great local restaurants just a short walk away. What impressed us the most was Mrs. Vivian. Her professionalism, excellent English, and thoughtful recommendations of must-visit spots in Hanoi made our trip even better. She is truly an asset to the hotel. We highly recommend Rex Hotel and would definitely stay here again!

We had the most amazing trip. While the views were absolutely stunning, the hotel was lovely, by far the best part of our already amazing experience was the service we received from Hilary and Tung. Hilary and Tung made our trip amazing and memorable, their service was top notch. We genuinely felt excited to return to the hotel to chat about our experiences with them. They were amazing even down to the small details, remembering our drink orders, asking questions about our travels and sharing the Vietnamese culture with us! Thank you Hilary and Tong for your amazing service, you are the best!!

We had a very pleasant 5-night stay at this hotel. The staff were incredibly friendly, cheerful, and always willing to help. They went above and beyond by assisting with luggage issues from the airport, recommending great shops, and sharing useful information about local places to visit.||The food and drinks were lovely, and the breakfast buffet was generous with plenty of options to choose from. It was such a calm and relaxing holiday overall.||A special thank you to Richard for being so welcoming and helpful throughout our stay — he was always smiling and quick to assist, especially with our luggage.||The hotel’s location is fantastic, surrounded by lots of restaurants and shops, perfect for an evening stroll. The rooms were a good size, clean, and very comfortable.||Overall, it was a convenient, relaxing, and truly enjoyable stay. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Absolutely Fantastic Stay at Rex Hanoi Hotel. From the moment I arrived, I was impressed by the warm welcome and exceptional service. The staff went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect. The room was spotless, modern, and super comfortable — I especially loved the attention to detail. The location is ideal, close to everything but still peaceful and relaxing. Breakfast was delicious with plenty of variety and fresh options. Richard provided First Class Service. Hotel Rex truly exceeded my expectations — I’ll definitely be coming back and recommending it to everyone I know!
