Rhotia Valley Tented Lodge, Ngorongoro, Tanzania - Explore & Book

"As we bump off-road and wind our way up a steep dirt track, past traditional cottages, farmers' fields, sleeping dogs and clusters of waving children, we see Rhotia Lodge at the very top of the hill. Perched proud, with stunning panoramic views of the valley below, its rural location is amazing - and all the more so for being a mere 30-minute drive from the Ngorongoro Crater. Most hotels near the Crater charge an arm and a leg for the privilege of staying there. Not so at Rhotia, which is both a lodge and a community project all in one, its mission to provide a home for local children who have none.Built from indigenous hardwood, in traditional African style, the main building is wrapped by an open veranda, with stools and easy chairs to soak up the glorious view over a sundowner beer. Staff are instantly wonderful, rushing out to welcome you with big smiles, cold towels and freshly squeezed juice; it feels good to be here. Out back are 15 Tented Houses: simple but attractive, with bright linens and private verandas. They are not luxurious, but life’s little pleasures are all in place: hot showers, comfy beds, even hot-water bottles at night. And after you rise to a delicious organic breakfast and piping hot coffee before an early-morning game drive in the Crater, you'll leave with a smile on your face - even at 5.30am. Highs A great budget option - including this lodge in your itinerary will lower the cost of your overall safari holidayNgorongoro has the highest density of animals in Africa (the Serengeti migration passes through here May-October); we saw masses of lions, hippos and zebra, and, thrillingly, a rhinoGood, imaginative food, most of it from Rhotia’s organic vegetable garden or supplied by local farmersThe cosy lounge with its wicker sofas and open fireplace, which you’ll appreciate in the evenings as you’re 1700m above sea levelBy staying here you directly contribute to The Rhotia Valley Children’s Home, which sits on an adjacent hilltop. It’s heart-warming to see the kids out playing, and you can visit if you want Lows It can cool down at night but you're at 1700 metres altitude so the air is fresh in the evenings.Slightly simpler than some other safari lodges: this is not high end luxury - but you’ll be very comfortable, and it's great to know that the lodge's profits help such a fantastic cause" - Liz Simpson

An exceptional lodge in a unique location. Tucked away in the natural landscape. The cabin is beautiful rustic charm with modern comforts. Hot water bottles brought to your room for warmth at night. Spacious deck with beautiful views. One of the most comfortable beds I've been in. High quality linens, locally inspire decor. The lodge has its own garden and the dishes are outstanding, fresh and flavourful, including the lunches sent with us on our safari days. The staff are warm, professional and one step ahead. This lodge supports an orphanage a short walk away. The manager will take you over to meet the children. It's obvious that he cultivates a relationship with them, they were guiniely happy to see him. This lodge is an experience. Do yourself a favor and add an extra day or two just to relax at this outstanding lodge.

Beautiful environment, fine people and excellent restaurant. We also enjoyed the swimming pool. Room is a tent, but everything is available. We also recommend to vist the associated orphan school. It is a fine and warm project. We recommend to book if you around in the area.

While the tents were quite well kept with modern amenities, the team managing the lodge won our hearts. Juma at the restaurant was so warm in his approach and diligent with everything, ensuring we were well looked after, including packed breakfast and lunch for our 6am departure for the crater. He was also playful with the kids, and they just loved the lodge experience. The food was delicious, everything was well organised and the entire team, including the other staff helping around, the security staff who walked us to the tent were spot on with their responsibilities, and they did it all with a smile. Full credit to Asha, the Lodge manager, for keeping the team in such good spirit and efficient. Her friendly demeanour, professionalism, and helpful nature made us feel at home. ||We had a lovely experience and would passionately recommend it to anyone, including families. ||Ps: Winters can be very cold, recommend sufficient warm bedtime clothes too

An unforgettable stay in an idyllic setting! I was welcomed with great warmth as soon as I arrived, which set the tone for all our stay. The view from the lodge is simply incredible, breathtaking! Each meal was a real delight, tasty and perfectly presented. As for the room, it was impeccable: comfortable, tastefully decorated and impeccable clean. A parenthesis of serenity and beauty that I recommend with closed eyes !

Our stay was an incredible experience. The place is beautiful, clean, and looks better in person than in photos. Everything works perfectly. The staff is super friendly and attentive to every detail. The food in the restaurant is delicious. It was definitely a wonderful experience and a highly recommended place.

What a wonderful place. High up in the hills with beautiful views. The tent was comfortable but our most basic on our safari, with no views and was chilly at night (they placed hot water bottles in our beds at night, which was a lovely touch). The staff were excellent and the food outstanding in a beautiful restaurant. At 530pm we were walked to the nearby children’s home and given a short tour. We took felt tips, note pads and sweets, which were well received. Our son enjoyed playing football with the children and locals. We wished we’d taken wrapped sweets for all the young children on the drive up to the tents, as there were 20/30 separate children waving at us and we wanted to give them sweets. A very memorable 2 night stay.

We had an amazing stay at this stunning tented lodge. The views are outstanding and matched by the service, food and very comfortable accommodation. Juma was very attentive and went out of his way at every moment to make sure we were taken care of and to share his excellent knowledge. Highly recommend.

Lovely little camp. The grounds and the views are stunning. There's a small pool but we didn't have time to use it and weather was not great.|Tents are very clean with big comfy beds. Due to time of year and being so high it was a little cold at night but they bought us hot water bottles and we slept well, soon warmed up.|As with most camps the hot water and lighting run off solar so be quick in the showers so you don't use all the hot water.|The dining area is beautiful and the food was great. Limited options as with all of the small camps but was fresh and tasty and something for everyone (unless you are very fussy haha)|Service was spot on. Everyone on site happy to help, smiling and attentive.|Would definitely recommend.
