Nestled in a tranquil corner of the medina, Riad Star blends Moroccan elegance with Art Deco flair, offering chic accommodations, a rooftop terrace, and a rejuvenating hammam experience.
"After making her name in Paris in the 1920s, American-born singer and actress Josephine Baker became a French citizen and, like many artists and intellectuals of the era, traveled often to Morocco, which was then a French protectorate. In the early 1940s, she stayed at a royal guest house at the invitation of the Pashah of Marrakech—a riad that, today, has been restored and re-launched in her honor as a boutique hotel named “Star.” Though just a 15-minute walk from Jemaa el-Fnaa square, the riad is hidden away in a more residential—and car-free—part of the walled old town, adding to the feeling that you’re staying in a private home. Britain-based owners Lucie and Mike Wood, who also own three other riad hotels in town, spent over two years restoring the property to reflect a mix of traditional Moroccan craftsmanship and the Art Deco style of Baker’s heyday. Along with hand-carved plaster, beautiful lamps, and original cedar woodwork, the hotel features Baker-related memorabilia and books as well as period items sourced from auctions. Past the ground-floor plunge pool and dining area (scene of the abundant daily breakfast) are 13 individually decorated rooms and suites. The Josephine has an oversized tub, the Jazz features carved cedar doors and a fireplace, and the Chiquita sits next to the lovely rooftop terrace, where guests can enjoy views of the Atlas Mountains from their lounge chairs. Also on-site is a small hammam with a steam area and massage room, as well as a cooking school, launched in 2017. When you want to get out and explore, the hotel will provide you with a free local cell phone and GPS-enabled app to help navigate the city."
The Riad is just gorgeous and it’s the staff that make it extra special. Fatima and her team of lovely ladies made us the most delicious breakfast each morning which meant we didnt need to eat again until dinner. The staff are so welcoming and helpful if you ever need advice on a restaurant booking or if you get lost in the souks.||You are so close to the souks here but as soon as the front door closes it is a calm oasis and absolutely gorgeous to do some sunbathing on the roof top. ||The place is spotless and the touches of Josephine Baker are everywhere so it was really interesting to learn about the history of the building. ||We also booked for local lady to come and do a hammam and massage in the riad which I would really recommend. ||Do not hesitate to book Riad Star, we will certainly be coming again .

So pictures won’t tell you this but this Riad is poorly maintained, with untrained staff. Rooms aren’t cleaned or even cleared of cups each morning and the staff can’t make a basic omelette. The dining area is dirty with bird droppings everywhere and the drainage is terrible in the bathrooms.
Wholly impractical if you have small children, and yes they are friendly but that doesn’t fix much. Best thing about it is its location. We walked to most places from here.

It was fabulous we were met at the airport then met at the gate and we're taken to the star. The riad was absolutely beautiful. Abdou and his crew were fantastic and all the girls. We had 2 suites which were very comfortable spotlessly clean and equipped with everything that you needed. The breakfast was varied and delicious and fresh. We had house robes and slippers in the rooms as well. The beds were very comfy and clean sheets everyday. Shampoos creams in the bathrooms were beautiful. Excellent hammam on the roof top plus you can eat your meals which are freshly prepared for you and watch the sun go down. Guides were offered to us but we went alone where we saw the souks museums and plaza and got lost. But you don't have to be afraid as security there is 100% and we never felt at risk at any moment. The people were really friendly and were happy to help even giving us history about Marrakech. But back to the riad star. We can't wait to go back again. It was 100% in everything. You couldn't wish for a better place to stay. Also there is a pool there which my grandson thoroughly enjoyed yesterday the riad star is a haven of peace homeliness and friendship. Fabulous place highly recommended and a very big thanks to Abdou and Khalid perfect in everyway

Our stay at Riad Star has been absolutely perfect. The Riad is of traditional Moroccan design with a beautiful layout and incredible architecture and craftsmanship. The intricate plaster work and tiling take you back to another world. We had two rooms, both were lovely with original features and considered design. On a practical note, beds are comfortable, there is plenty of storage, the rooms are large and the water is always hot. Breakfast is a delight and is served pretty much anywhere you want to eat. The dining area is relaxing but we also enjoyed eating on the rooftop terrace overlooking the medina. If you like a late starter don’t worry as breakfast runs to midday and is so plentiful you won’t want lunch. Location is very central and you can walk everywhere, the Medina has literally 100’s of stalls and eating places all within a few minutes walk. Lastly the staff… you can’t ask for a better team. Nothing is too much and you are made to feel very welcome. Any information or activities that you want can be arranged by Amine and the team. The hotel also has a hammam which I can recommend and although we didn’t eat lunch or dinner the smell from the kitchen was amazing. We will be back very soon.

My stay started off rocky when no one was there for my pre-arranged airport pickup; however, my experience soon got better when i got to the riad. The service at the hotel is amazing and the staff are truly so kind and committed to making your experience great. Breakfast here is definitely the star of the show and i LOVED eating on the rooftop each morning. Solo female travelers beware of the VERY sketchy location. The riad is located in a twisted corner of a forgotten alley, so i wasn’t comfortable leaving after dark. Overall, i was happy here but i wish the location was better!

Ali and Khaled- these 2 people make staying at this property THE MOST best experience, especially if you are traveling with family and kids… Inspite of the location inside of Medina alleys, they walk you through until you feel confident and comfortable. Reachable with a call away.
Homely feeling because of all the other staff like Khadeeja and other girls in the kitchen.
Awesome place to stay if visiting Marrakesh. I hope they remain the same so we’d like to visit again with the rest of the bigger family inshallah

My family stayed at the Riad Star for a few nights. This was our first trip to Marrakech, and I hope it won’t be our last. We had drivers arranged from the airport. I came later than the rest of my family, and they were very accommodating in booking another car for us. We stayed in the Ebony room, which was perfect for a family of 4. We had reached out about a guide originally, but it fell through, so Amine offered to take us around the Souk on our first day there. He was so kind and helpful! Breakfast each day was delicious and the rooftop terrace was wonderful at night. We had a fantastic stay at the Riad Star!
