One of my favorite place by the Grand Canal which can be useful if during a stay in Venice, you'd like to buy fresh fruit, or rent an apartment and continue cooking for yourself, visit the Mercati di Rialto. This covered market, located in the San Polo district, is close to the Rialto Bridge, allowing you to enjoy two tourist attractions at once. The covered halls of the "Mercato al Pesce al Minute," where fresh fish is sold, are particularly noteworthy. But in the rest of the open-air section of the Venice market, you can buy fresh and dried fruit, select fresh fish and meat, as well as vegetables and spices. The aromas and colors of all the fresh produce promise delicious options for a snack, lunch, or healthy dinner.
The market is where locals do their shopping. You don't have to buy anything there, although, of course, the stalls are the most popular. You can also enjoy all the fresh produce and take some photos. And while you're at the market, you can also take advantage of everything else nearby. There are plenty of restaurants, bars, and cafes to discover, especially near the Rialto Bridge. And don't forget to try something in the typical trattorias.
I recommend waking up early as it opens from 7.30 am and going when it's less crowded. Locals, among others, take advantage of the morning calm to buy fresh produce that they'll cook during the day. Later in the morning, the place becomes increasingly touristy, and the locals tend to stay away so you can still experience a part of an authentic Venice.
