On the Grid : Kallbadhuset

"Wedged inbetween the Oresund bridge and the ultra modern city skyline of Västra hamnen, this over a hundred year old cold bath house on Ribban beach – with it’s saunas, sundecks and top restaurant – is one of the oldest and most loved institutions by the folks of Malmö. Here you are always welcomed as you are; to take a icy bath, sweat out all your worries or just to bathe in the sun with a chilled beer or glass of bubbly. The vibe is toned down and respectful – take the chance to meditate on life." - Erika Lindén Jansson

It was my first time in a Swedish sauna, and as an Italian, I wasn’t used to the local sauna culture, especially the custom of sneezing. However, I believe that when you visit another country, it’s important to respect their traditions. I found it one of the most liberating and relaxing experiences I’ve had in years, and I highly recommend it to everyone. The sauna is divided into separate areas for men and women, and we were all nude, which made it feel very open and natural. There are also sunbathing decks and access to the Baltic Sea. I tried the experience of going from the sauna straight into the Baltic, and it was absolutely amazing. Another highlight was the mixed-gender sauna session, where I saw people from all over the world—young, old, from various nationalities and religions. It made me think that this is how the world should be: everyone together in peace.

Amazing experience, a highlight of our vacation. As a traveler from the USA, I was a bit nervous about the nude saunas and figuring out appropriate customs but some of the other Google reviews on here were helpful as were the staff and other sauna visitors. If you’re in a mixed gender group, I would coordinate meet-up times in the mixed gender sauna (mind the note about where men and women are allowed to sit in the mixed room) and when to meet up in the cafe on departure. Super enjoyable, peaceful, and welcoming experience. The location was so cool. We spent about two hours here in total in June on a weekday and there were about 15-20 other sauna visitors on the women’s and men’s sides each. It didn’t feel crowded.

Atmospheric restaurant. The sauna is wonderful, I love it, you can spend the whole day here. It's worth taking snacks and drinks. A good place to relax and isolate yourself from the world.

One of my favourite places in Sweden. The atmosphere is always great and the saunas and baths are something you must try! Only downside is that it's no secret that this is a wonderful place, so it can become a bit crowded. Also it's not super clear which ones are the shared saunas compared to the gendered saunas.

I love it here in general. It's just a bit crowded on some days and they should really find a better system for the sauna aufguss to give everyone a fair chance to experience it. The staff is sometimes great and sometimes less knowledgable and unfortunately not very polite at times. The lady at the cashier asked me where I'll be seated and when I replied I hadn't found somewhere to sit yet she responded with "well can you figure it out then???" so some of the staff members should really try to be more professional and service minded. It's not a big place after all so it wouldn't have been that hard to spot me (to provide that extra top service) and when they messed up my order there was no apology or anything, they just asked me to return to the cashier to correct their mistake..

By far the most enjoyable part of our trip to Malmö. The views are incredible, the saunas are hot and the sea is cold. You pay at the counter in the cafe (where towels can be rented and padlocks can be bought) and make your way to the changing rooms. There are small lockers for valuables - using the padlock you just bought at the cafe counter - in the communal area. Get undressed (swimwear is not permitted), shower, dry and enjoy the four saunas - two men only and two mixed - as well as dips in the sea. The hot tub was always busy when we visited. Looking out onto the horizon with only sky and sea in the distance, while sat in a baking hot sauna, was one of Malmö’s highlights for me. There are several sets of stairs down to the sea for some cold water exposure. The cafe was excellent and reasonably priced for a post-sauna drink and bite to eat. If I lived in the area, I think I’d be there every week. A very welcoming space

The best sauna I've ever been to. Relaxed atmosphere, a variety of sauna types, very affordable prices, and the opportunity to take a cold plunge in the Baltic Sea. Plus, there's a great view over the city shoreline.

Great open air sauna with direct access to the sea! Amazing experience being able to sit in a nearly 💯 degrees sauna and then jump right into the 12 degrees sea water.
