Google
It’s always a hit and miss for a good gumbo, but the chicken and sausage here was great! Bread pudding was delicious and husband loved the jambalaya! Also, Our servers were very friendly and understanding to a spilled drink from my daughter. 5 stars from us.

Google
Absolutely incredible food. I'm from Va and we don't have food like this at home. First time trying gumbo and I'm in love. Great service and the restaurant is very clean. I will be back to get more.

Pinkie Rideau

Google
Gumbo so good it made me cry! Tasted just like my mom's! I had the jambalaya, crawfish pie and file' Gumbo. Just wow!

Rick McClean

Google
I guess the corn bread was pretty good. The “seafood gumbo” was all gumbo, no seafood unless you count a couple of baby mushy shrimp. I was shown bowls to see the comparison of sizes of sides, then when I got my food, no bowl. Just a cafeteria plate. Pretty underwhelming for a Cajun place IN Louisiana.

Judy Buckley

Google
We ordered an ice chest of Jambalaya and also Gumbo for a party. It was ready on time, and was absolutely delicious! They even told me the best way to warm up the leftovers when I called the next day. Always dependable and delicious!

Ash McCastle

Google
I ordered on doordash. The food was not what I expected. I got a jambalaya, potato salad and white beans with sausage. It was basically flavor, the beans had no smoked sausage even tho I ordered with sausage and the catfish was not catfish. I eat a lot of fish. That was not catfish. Very disappointed. I will never recommend not try again. Please tell customers that its not catfish.

Christina Thompson

Google
The food was amazing . The sweet girl that took our order was so very nice . The place was clean . The kitchen crew, on the other hand, apparently didn't realize the wood wall didn't block out all the cussing and conversations they were having .

Google
I hadn't been there before. I had driven into the area for the night on my first leg of my cross country drive. I saw the sign as a food option when I took my exit. Unfortunately, they were closed because it was late. I'm happy that I decided to visit before I left. I had seafood gumbo, cornbread, a mini crayfish pie, and a boudin ball with remoulade. The employees were helpful and nice. The food was delicious!

Yelp
I enjoyed the food so much I chose to eat lunch here twice in a one week period. I ABSOLUTELY recommend their jambalaya with pork OMG was it delish. With the small portion $8.99 you can select one side. The tender cuts of pork were so flavorful and tender great smoked wood flavor. The andouille slight spiced flavor greatly compliments the dish. The staff is so friendly they just added to the over all experience. They do a fabulous job of guiding my choice, delivering my food to my table and maintaining a clean and welcome restaurant. I will definitely dine here in the future if travels bring me back to Baton Rouge. Thank you for a memorable lunch.

Yelp
It was a few exits from my hotel. Walked in and only one other couple in the place. It was clean and nice looking but your normal quick service location. Staff was nice. Treated me once I got to counter to order. I had already looked at the menu before going over so I knew what I wanted. Ordered the chicken and sausage jambalaya with potato salad. They were out of the chicken and sausage jambalaya so I had to wait about 20 mins for them to make a new batch. That was ok because I knew it would be fresh and hot. Waited at a table for my food to go. Took it back to the hotel. The jambalaya had a good flavor to it. The chicken was a rough chop so you got small pieces and large pieces which was nice. Some of the rice was a bit dry and crunchy but over all it was good. The potato salad was good but I think the potatoes were a bit over cooked and make the salad taste like mashed potatoes. I could not see the sweet relish or taste the crunch but I know it was in there, the potato salad had a sweet taste to it. I like it better than mustard based ones. The cornbread was on point, only missed some butter. It was sweet and good consistency. The banana pudding was better the next day after I throw it on the fridge. Not sure if the short drive made it warm up or if their fridge was not working too well. It did need a little more fresh banana chunks for my liking but it was good over all. This location is recommended.

Yelp
So far...as my quest does continue, this is the best chicken and sausage gumbo in Louisiana. Although I've tried most things on the menu, it's my go-to favorite, along with a side of green beans and a smoked sausage link. Whenever I'm near Baton Rouge, this is where I stop to feast. Approved! :)

Suzanne H.

Yelp
Glad we found this restaurant online as we were driving to Baton Rouge. We only had 30 minutes so we called ahead and the food was ready when we arrived. Ate, it was good. A perfect stop along our cross country road trip. Jambalaya was my favorite. But all seemed to be missing some flavor so the hot sauce was a must. Overall enjoyed it! Wish they had okra

Toriyana S.

Yelp
I was told about this establishment and I went to sit in and enjoy some lunch with a friend. The food was making and so was the service. The inside was very clean and neat. I recently ordered from DoorDash and the food still arrived AMAZING as ever. I highly reccomend their fried fish and cornbread. 10/10

Yelp
Ok on Friday, 11/22/24, I had a taste for some gumbo as it was the first cool night. I went to Rice and Roux and ordered both a large seafood (shrimp and crab) and a chicken and sausage gumbo, roughly $40. I was so disappointed when I got home and opened my containers and they were both filled with just gumbo base/liquid. No proteins or vegetables. The seafood had what tasted like the remnants of crab. So I had to add shrimp, sausage, chicken, green onion and parsley to them. That was completely unacceptable. The ONLY good thing was the base had a good flavor, but I feel cheated.

Derek R.

Yelp
Traveling from California, stopped in Baton Rouge. Found this place online. Great food. Friendly staff. Highly recommend. Don't know why the hotel didn't suggest this place when I asked about restaurants in area. Delicious. Must try!

Tyla L.

Yelp
This place is horrible they have the worst customer service i dropped my food because of the poor quality of the bags that they give and this so called managers name kalen Caleb whatever was rude and i will Be calling bright and early to make another complaint

Yelp
The female cashier on duty around 6 pm was not friendly at all. There was absolutely no one in the restaurant and when I approached the counter she couldn't be bothered to smile or say anything until I said "hi". She seemed bothered that we were even there. She was however efficient in taking our order. I got a small jambalaya dinner (chicken & sausage) with potato salad and cornbread. My husband got the sampler (chicken & sausage jambalaya), chicken gumbo, red beans & rice with a roll. The chicken & sausage jambalaya portions were generous, but it was so dry and had no spice or real flavor to it. The gumbo was also a good portion, but again no spice. It was only better than the jambalaya because it had the liquid. The chicken tasted like it had been grilled which was off-putting. The potato salad was basically cold mashed potatoes with a few lumps and basically no flavor. The red beans & rice were the best part of the entire meal. Not because they were so great, but in comparison to everything else we had it was the best item. The cornbread was ok, but nothing special. At least it was moist. Same goes for the dinner roll. The prices were very reasonable, but since there was nothing yummy it didn't matter. Also, the dining area was cute, but the floors looked very grimy like they never get a thorough cleaning. The women's bathroom was gross and the toilet was not secure to the floor which you don't find out until you sit down. It was sort of scary because it lunged forward loudly. My husband said the Men's bathroom was also not great. We were hopeful trying a local Cajun place as we traveled through Louisiana, but we were extremely disappointed by this experience. I would not recommend this place to anyone. We make better jambalaya at home with Hillshire spicy sausage.

Brad D.

Yelp
Food tasted good. Chicken and sausage jambalaya. Could have used more seasoning but that's my taste. But the portion was way small. Probably 1/2 size of jambalaya shoppe. It came in a small elementary cafeteria plate that was mostly empty. I left hungry For that I give 3 stars

Anna F.

Yelp
Yummmmm... they didn't have jambalaya but they had pastalaya. I said ok but I was suspicious. But I learned that pastalaya is delicious. I petition it to be called "Louisiana Lo Mein." I want more...

Gabe L.

Yelp
Went here on a Sunday had a couple of tables, asked for different things to try, I asked for boudin balls, they were over cooked, the gumbo was watered down with no flavor, the red beans and rice were dry and couldn't mix them.

Casey R.

Yelp
Still one of our favorite stops while in BR! If you are looking to take a meal to a family, dinner while passing through or just have a hankering for some good Acadian food this is a wonderful option. Tonight we chose a small bucket of jambalaya and crawfish pies to feed our family of 5. Everyone had full bellies and excited to get more our next time in Baton Rouge.

Iris C.

Yelp
The moment you walk in, you can tell they are cooking some tasty food. Ordered the seafood gumbo and the chicken gumbo. Chicken gumbo was tastier than the seafood one. Ordered white rice with red beans along with vegetabl sides. They were decent. Catfish was good. I would come back if I was in the area.

Anne F.

Yelp
We were once again on our quest across the country and stopped for a night in Baton Rouge. I wanted Jambalaya because we're in Louisiana, you eat jambalaya or gumbo (right?). Anyways, the original place I wanted to go to was the Jambalaya Shoppe. However, it was Sunday, so most places were closed. I found Rice & Roux online and saw they had jambalaya so we decided to order online through their website. I had ordered the small Pastalaya (jambalaya with noodles instead of rice) combo, so I subbed cornbread for the roll and got the side salad. My husband got the regular jambalaya with corn on the cob and fries. We ordered and were waiting, all excited to eat this food. After about an hour and a half, we were starting to get worried so we called the restaurant. It turns out that the food was ready for a while, and it was f**king DOORDASH that didn't pick it up! They offered a full refund but I really wanted the jambalaya so we turned it down. In order for one of the staff members to deliver it to us, we would have to call DoorDash and have them cancel the service and then they could deliver it to us. But we were both hungry as hell so we decided to just go there and pick it up ourselves. The staff members at the restaurant were really nice about it and printed the ticket with the customer service number for DoorDash. We called DoorDash on the way back to the hotel and my husband was put on hold for like 45 minutes. Of course, DoorDash said we have to go through the restaurant to get a refund. (F**k DoorDash btw, I'll never use them again.) The food was delicious though, and totally worth the wait. The pastalaya was so good and flavorful, not too spicy, but just enough for a kick. Despite the horrible experience courtesy of DoorDash, I did like the restaurant and I would recommend it.

Ray M.

Yelp
Based on reviews, I tried it. Big mistake, it was just plain nasty. I got the sample platter to go with pastalaya, chicken and sausage gumbo, green beans, crawfish pies and a chocolate pudding dessert, I ate the green beans, roll and dessert. The rest was disgusting. I am from New Orleans so I know good gumbo. I picked the chicken out of the pasta because that was the only edible part. Whoever found this food to be 5 stars, I call foul. Either your taste buds are broken or you're lying. Or maybe that cook has quit because today, 7/30/23, it was a total waste of $17.57. YUCK! The service was good though.

Meagan R.

Yelp
Jambalaya, bland. Gumbo, bland. Boudin, fine.. kind of bland. Etouffee, delicious. ...Get the etouffee Staff was friendly, place was clean.

Darrell P.

Yelp
Ate here for the first time. Great food at a really great price. I had a plate LOADED with jambalaya, 2 small crawfish pies, a bowl of seafood gumbo, and potato salad for less than $15. Definitely on my "must visit" list for the next time I'm in Baton Rouge.

Tammy T.

Yelp
I cannot say enough good things about the delicious food here! The gumbo is delicious. My husband enjoys the jambalaya and I get the fried fish dinner a lot!

Erin M.

Yelp
I pretty much stayed at this place when I was living on this side of town and before jambalaya shoppe was built right down the street from it. They have a very extensive menu to find a little something for everybody. Their jambalaya is good but it's not the best in BR. Sometimes the rice can be crunchy or very wet if that makes sense which throws it off a little. But it is still good so I am not knocking it just the texture can be questionable on occasion. I usually get the fish plate with double chicken and sausage jambalaya and upgrade my roll to cornbread. The cornbread is always so good. Worth the 50 cent up charge for that buttery homemade stuff. I am not being fan of their gumbo as the roux isn't the best but some people might like it. I'm just not a big fan.

Jaimie C.

Yelp
Hubby and I stopped by for lunch and weren't disappointed! We both ordered large bowls of the seafood gumbo and thought it was delicious! Fair price for the portion too.

Traci B.

Yelp
We ordered the chicken and sausage jambalaya bucket and the red beans and rice dinner for 4 for a family get together. The jambalaya is some of best I've ever had! The rice is tender and not dry with a ton of chicken and sausage. It had just enough spice without being too spicy and not bland at all! Not greasy either! The red beans were nicely seasoned just slightly on the spicy side. The sides with the family meal we chose were potato salad and green beans both were very good. I was a little surprised that the potato salad didn't have cubes of potatoes but more like mashed potatoes but was still good. The proportions were very generous and well priced. We were very happy with everything! Sorry I forgot to take pictures!

Sarah S.

Yelp
This is a cute shop. I ordered from the counter for take-out. The jambalaya was pretty good; I still prefer more seasoning and a moister texture, but it was good. I got the seafood gumbo and we weren't thrilled with that ... it was very "fishy" so I'm thinking it was an older batch. It just didn't taste fresh. It could have used more crab (I didn't see or taste any crab). It also needed a little more seasoning and I prefer a darker roux. Overall, it was ok. I'd give them another chance.

Kay C.

Yelp
I ordered from this restaurant via delivery service twice, I don't think they'll be a third offer. My first order was gumbo, but it was as thick as a stew. It was edible since I had no other options for lunch, if I did I would of gladly discarded it. Another time, I ordered a red bean and rice bowl with sausage and cornbread. The red beans are completely flavorless, I used the many hot sauce packets that accompanied my meal in order to make it edible. Some of the beans aren't even cooked completely, as O chew someone are very crunchy. The sausage was fine but it wasn't the main dish, and the cornbread was spongy as opposed to soft. If there's anyone looking for an authentic Louisiana experience this isn't it.

Andrew M.

Yelp
The red beans and rice with a side of sausage was very good. The small is more than enough to eat. The mini crawfish pie was delicious and the banana pudding was outstanding. Very good prices especially for the amount of food. Having a delivery option was appreciated after driving 400 miles today.

Shawne T.

Yelp
I enjoyed my meal here at Rice & Roux. The chicken jambalaya was very . They chicken and sausage in the rice was seasoned very well. I would like to try their gumbo my next time visiting the city.

Lyle S.

Yelp
Very meh. The place is in a good spot with fast and friendly service. Kinda like chic fil e where you order and sit and they bring it to you. The menu is standard Louisiana fare like red beans and rice and jambalaya. I got a small plate of red beans and rice with a side of corn. Very limited sides options. The red beans were bland with no sausage in it. Served school lunch style. It was cheap and fast though. So not a bad place to eat if you're busy with errands and want something fast that isn't really fast food.

Julia K.

Yelp
Yuck! Don't waste your money. Go to the Jambalaya Shoppe. I went years ago, didn't like it. Decided to try it again. Still not better. Will never waste my money again. Please learn how to cook gumbo. And the rice was sticky. Big clumps of sticky rice. Total fail.

Peter K.

Yelp
Found this place, on way through LA. Wanted to try boudin and some other creole dishes and Yelp directed me to his place. We ordered boudin, smoked sausage, jambalaya, gumbo, rice. Didn't think the kids would like it. Was wrong, each dish was consumed fully. We all enjoyed everything that was ordered. If we were near, would order again. Extra points for the nice lady who changed our order at last minute without any problem.

David N.

Yelp
This place food is trash look like they use possum or squirrel to make the food. The customer service is disgusting to say the least. I am from outer state and the house that I own is near the place go I go there. The jumpalaya shop nearby is way better. Do not suggest this place for anyone.

TiciaLove B.

Yelp
When I was planning my trip to Baton Rouge, I made sure that this spot was on my list. I was a tad disappointed. The jambalaya was basically chicken and sausage with rice. I would not call it jambalaya. The gumbo was gumbo. Upon adding salt and pepper, it was better. Don't get me started with the corn. Canned corn! It was okay, but I'm not a big fan of canned corn. The dinner roll was served cold. Meh... The employees were nice and the mini crawfish pie was delicious. For those reasons only, this place gets two stars. I would not stop here again for gumbo or jambalaya.

Melissa O.

Yelp
We are always looking for good places to stop when we travel. This place is close to the interstate. The portions a large and cost less than fast food. It also came out rather quickly, which is a definite plus. We look forward to stopping in again next time we are passing through.

Mike M.

Yelp
While driving through Red Stick, Yelp led me here for dinner last week. After parking out front in the parking lot and walking in, I went to the counter to peruse the menu on the wall. I decided on the Sampler 1 which consisted of 1 cup of chicken and sausage gumbo with 2 crawfish pies and a side of red beans along with some jambalaya. The food came out in less than 10 minutes (see pics). Everything on the plate was good and graded out to a 3.5 except for the jambalaya which was a little dry for my taste (2). I decided to round down for an overall score of 3. Still a-ok but not deserving a 4. For a place with a great name like this I kind of expected more taste. I would consider returning to this counter service casual Cajun restaurant. However, I probably will get my Cajun fix in the Breaux Bridge/Lafayette area on I-10. I realize that this review is not that descriptive and that's because the meal did not stand out to me. Sorry! My visit was on Saturday, July 23 at approximately 6:00 p.m.

Mikel V.

Yelp
I really like this place. It's simple dining with fantastic food that tastes homemade at very reasonable prices.

Nicole M.

Yelp
I ordered take out from here for the first time due to recommendations at my job and all I can say is wow I will be back again. The food was amazing! I got a combo with chicken and sausage jambalaya red beans boudin and chicken and sausage gumbo for 10.99 and yep it was most definitely worth the price paid. I will be back. The best boudin I've had since being down in Louisiana. The jambalaya was so tasty it was the perfect amount of spice it was loaded with meat and the portions were amazing. I would come back just for the jambalaya it was just that good. The red beans were just ok but they lacked meat and salt. The chicken and sausage gumbo was yummy. I can see what people mean by a slightly floury taste but I think it's because there isn't any salt or pepper to give it that taste but honestly I would order it again and just add my own. The meats are too good. I will be returning.

D.L. P.

Yelp
Made a road trip pit stop here in lieu of eating fast food. We ordered sampler #1 and sampler #2 and kids jambalaya with corn. The crawfish pies and potato salad were the best thing we ate. I had crawfish pies for the first time at Luke's in NOLA and the RR pies were nearly as good. This was my first time eating boudin, gumbo and jambalaya from a restaurant (I make my own at home in TX), and I was expecting the dishes to have more color and the meat to be juicier. The boudin was very pasty and mostly rice. I did not care for it. The chicken and sausage in the jambalaya were dry and there were no vegetables in the dish. It was not as hearty and colorful as I expected and was a pretty bland dish. The shrimp in the seafood gumbo tasted like canned shrimp. I did not taste any crab (I was told the gumbo has shrimp and crab). More rice and sauce than anything else. Overall, I was not impressed with our meals. If this is what traditional, Louisiana home cooking is supposed to be like, then I can safely say I do not care for LA home cooking :( In the end, the price we paid for subpar Cajun food was fair, but next time I am willing to pay $$ for a more vibrant and fresh take on Cajun.

Geno P.

Yelp
Bummer, stopped by on the way to the beach. I think the shrimp in the gumbo was frozen and stored bought. Didn't see much if any crab in the bowl either. If your looking for a good bowl of seafood gumbo keep driving. Note: we did eat during quarantine, but still can't imagine this place more than 2 stars

Ronald C.

Yelp
The big takeaway I had from my delicious meal at Rice & Roux is how similar it is to another local chain restaurant. I don't mind that at all because everything I had on my sampler was pretty dang good. The jambalaya, gumbo, and red beans with rice are pretty much what you'd expect from a Louisiana business focused on Cajun dishes. The people working the counter were friendly and helpful in my decision making process and I recall it wasn't terribly expensive. I'll probably be back- but bring an appetite- these portions are huge!

Blake N.

Yelp
Very mediocre Jambalaya. With so many great options, why go here? They had run out of chicken, so I got pork. Maybe that was the issue, but the flavors were just okay

Nathaniel V.

Yelp
Great local place to grab some Louisiana food and hang out with friends! 5/5 Food 5/5 Value 5/5 Taste Overall it's a pretty solid place. The price is average to pricey, but it's great tasting food!

Dwyn J.

Yelp
Was surprised it's like a local fast food chain...great, friendly service. The jambalaya was yummy, but I wasn't a fan of the gumbo (prefer savory and spicy over sweet). The Slap Yo' Momma seasoning on the table fixed it pretty well :)

Rhonda M.

Yelp
This is not for everyone...Tourists will love this place! Not Louisiana gumbo! Sorta pricey and lacked a lot!

Avery G.

Yelp
Well, I guess they are under new management or the Boss was away. They use to give you a lot of food and it was delicious. Well, not today, Sunday, December 4, 2022. My friend got the Pork and Sausage Jambalaya Dinner, with White Beans and Potato Salad. Well, the big section of the go box was not very full. I don't know how many pieces of sausage he had, but I can tell you, he only had three small pieces of the pork. He said the Jambalaya was OK, but not as good as it used to be, and the small amount of white beans were very bland. The Potato Salad was more like mashed potatoes. I wanted to order a Bowl of Chicken and sausage gumbo with the rice on the side and potato salad. I was told, that I could not get the bowl to go, just the cup. I have been getting their food for over 20 years and always get the same thing. So, I said, ok to the cup of Chicken and sausage gumbo, because I knew the size of the container it came in. Well, not anymore. It was in a very small container, and it should not be called chicken and sausage gumbo. It should be called sausage, and skin gumbo. The gumbo was not even a full 8 Oz cup. Yes, I did measure the amount. It had a few pieces of sausage with maybe two little bitty pieces of chicken, about the size of a half of a teaspoon and about three pieces of skin. Yes, Chicken skin. Yuck!! Good thing I got the rice on the side, or I guess I would of only had juice. The Potato Salad was ok to me, but not much taste to it. I was so disappointed because I really wanted some of their good gumbo. But it was not good today So I guess I will be going down the street to the Jambalaya Shoppe, because their food is always good and they give you a lot of food. Also, there was a lady there that wanted the Pastalaya Dinner and the girl employee said that they were all out of the Pastalaya because they had a busy morning. It was only 1:30 pm. Well, make another pot. So what happened Rice and Roux? Was the Boss out of town this weekend? Not wasting my money there anymore. And the staff is not as friendly like they use to be.

Christie E.

Yelp
gumbo was so friggin good, but the jambalaya felt like it was reheated crawfish pies were soooo good. would've been a five stars if i didn't watch a dude smush a roach lol

Leighton F.

Yelp
Where do I begin... scheduled for a pick up because I was passing through baton rough and thought this place is worth trying for a quick hot meal based on the reviews. when picked up the food is cold and lumpy and the flavor is really bland - probably one of the worst Cajun food I ever had and I thought Louisiana is known for having the best Cajuns. I'm from Texas and the cajun food here is so so much better! The worst part is the food gave both me and my husband bad stomachache and made our drive home a nightmare!! Would not recommend this place for anyone looking for good Cajun food because this just ain't it...

Marco G.

Yelp
I was really disappointed in the quality of food at this location. Showing up just after the lunch rush, the restaurant still had a few patrons enjoying their meal but apparently I should've ordered what they were having. As my first time at a Rice and Roux, I ordered the sampler with boudin, jambalaya, and gumbo with a side of red beans. I wasn't expecting some grand display of plating and based on the slightly worn look of this place I wrongfully assumed it meant the food was good. The gumbo was inedible, it lacked flavor outside of this strange combination of bitter and sour notes, it turned my stomach. The jambalaya was dry, I remedied it by pouring over the only flavorful item...the red beans. The boudin was encased in what looked like an extra sensitive condom, a rubbery shell that held in the flavorless mush they labeled as boudin. I was really looking forward to eating here based on other reviews but I'll have to ask locals what they eat in the area because I wasted time and money to receive a 4 hour stomach ache, no thanks.

Madi T.

Yelp
Ordered gumbo and it had 0 well anything in it. I think I got two sausages and just a bunch of juice. I'd just expect a little better, you know. Like you have one job. If I actually got anything in my gumbo it might have been good!

Crystal John K.

Yelp
This place is legit. Great food. Service was good. Friendly people. A little hidden. Everyone should try this place.

Missy B.

Yelp
EXTREMELY disappointed in the pathetic Shrimp salad at the new Lee Dr. location. Businesses don't last long in this area so you might want to step up your game.
