This Stunning Mountain Range in Italy Has Some of the Country’s Best Skiing — and Is Surprisingly Easy to Get To

"Accessible only on foot via a roughly 20-minute hike (with a cable lift available for luggage), this remote wood-paneled hut sits on the shore of a frozen mountain lake inside a protected alpine park. A family-run 13-room inn operated by three sisters, it exudes a cozy, buzzy atmosphere filled with skiers and snowshoers and requires winter gear such as crampons on icy approaches. The kitchen showcases seasonal, local mountain ingredients — highlights include melt-in-your-mouth venison carpaccio, lightly pickled trout, airy braised fish balls, a Rendena veal goulash over polenta, and hand-cut tagliatelle with a venison-and-currant ragù — all hearty yet delicate expressions of the Dolomites." - Pilar Guzmán

Beautiful location. It is a starting point for many beautiful hikes in the area. The refugio can only be reached by foot and the luggage is transported via a small cable car. During the day it can be very busy with people spending the day at the lake, but at the end of the day it is quiet and peaceful. The rooms are not very large but comfortable. Very friendly service.

We stopped here for lunch before longer hike in the mountains. Prices seemed a quite inflated (compared with other mountain shelters) but we ordered some pasta and stew with potatos. The food was just ok, but nothing exceptional to justify the price. The main issue was the quantity, which would not be enough even for a five year old child, literally half a portion.

A beautiful rifugio situated right on a lake. Rooms were comfortable, food was good, and a sauna session after a long hike was perfect. Highly recommend.

We had very delicious pasta with nuts here. Meals are slightly more expensive than in other similar places. But additional service fee 5eur for one meal is bit too much.

By far one of the most amazing places that I got to visit. First when I was just a couple of years old, and back then I was already amazed by the baggage lift, that my parents had to load. Then, later, more than 5 visits during mountain bike trips. Everyone I brought loved it, our ‚Mutprobe‘ used to be going into the lake, we had beers at night on the rocks on the other side of the lake. The fresh trouts for dinner I always kept in mind. Could not recommend this place more!

Great place for hot chocolate and grandpa cake in the middle of the hike

Amazing place to eat or stay in a stunning location. We didn’t expect somewhere with such great food and drink in such an isolated location. The staff were incredibly hospitable and welcoming, and the food was great. You can stay here overnight at a reasonable price, but I didn’t get to see the rooms You have to walk for about 40 mins up the mountain to reach it (and down again) but it’s well worth the effort. Definitely put throw place on your to-do list if you’re in the area

What a pity that this “gem “ has now been converted into a mass group location, once it was exclusive and difficult to reach, a 1,5h hike uphill , now a flat access path has been built and special needs have access with wheelchairs and strollers, which is a wonderful opportunity… Other huts have been built for sandwiches and drinks … a real pity! It’s completely lost its magic !!!
