3 Best Day Trips from Venice | Condé Nast Traveler

"Righetti is what Italians call a "self restaurant"—similar to a buffet. You pick and set your own table, head to the back to ask for the plates you want, fill up your wine carafe from the tap, and enjoy. The only thing servers will bring directly to you is a post-lunch espresso, making the experience cozy, ultra low-key, and casual. The specialty here is homestyle Italian food: marinated grilled veggies, simple and hearty pastas, roasted potatoes, creamy blobs of polenta with stew, and straightforward, unadorned meat dishes. If you're driving around the region to see the Palladian Villas, this is a great place to stop for a casual lunch." - Andrea Whittle

The food itself was amazing! So tasty but well proportioned ingredients wise. Not too heavy or salty. Very reasonable prices too. The issue is the chaotic ordering process. You have no trays so you have to carry your food in multiple trips unless you have the arms of a Hindu god. You also don’t pay when you get the food so you have to remember what you ordered. There is also no clear line to get the food so this creates a mad dash at the food area. It’s stressful and unpleasant to get the food. I had the asparagus lasagna and it was some of the best food I’ve had in Vicenza( I just wish it was more relaxing to order.

Good for a quick bite. Fast service as you pick up your own food, very busy around lunch time. Nothing special for me except the pear soaked in wine! Loved it. I would stop by again just for that dessert!

Great place and unique experience. Cool place to go and easy 5 stars if you know what to expect. It is all self service but great quality of food. Wine, beer, coke and water on self serve tap with different sizes. Simply tell the man at the till what you ate or show a picture. All based on the honour system. Great lunch spot with tons of locals and a good buzz. Big recommend.

Google
This is a place for locals. The food feels like homemade, the staff don’t speak very good English but are happy to help and figure out what you need/want. Very cute and quaint interior. Tiramisu and most desserts are really good. Beware of the Italian squatty potty (¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

Google
The best place for lunch in the city center. The dishes are delicious and quite cheap, especially considering the location and the historic building. Also, everyday there is a different menu. There is almost no waiting time as everything is already cooked. Definitely recommended!

When one goes in the evening the restaurant changes from self service to 'service'. This in itself is unfortunate as the service is slow, incompetent and indifferent. The food is mediocre and there's no ambiance. A quick sandwich at a bar counter is a better option. Stay away from this place!

This is what we would call tavernaki (ταβερνάκι) in Greek. Nothing fancy or mind blowing here, just an amazing local restaurant with decent food (fantastic baked potatoes), the most polite service (they didn’t speak English but they did speak some German so we made it) and a fantastic location which led us to discovering the bustling nightlife of this unexpectedly beautiful town.

Fantastic self-service restaurant with great meals and affordable prices. You’ll experience the real Italian vibe here!

Yelp
Not entirely sure how this has over a four-star rating. Service was slow. Food was average at best. Menus are a piece of normal printer paper slid inside a page protector. Options are very limited. Bread was far from fresh. Steak was below average quality. Swordfish, while tasting good, was only a few tiny pieces. Overall disappointment in the food. The two stars is only for the outdoor dining area, which was nice.

Yelp
This place used to be only self serve iBut because of the restrictions, they now have table service. Menu changes daily. Very reasonably priced for the quality of food. Definitely home cooking. The rooster was very tasty, as were the sausages. Also recommend the roasted peppers to accompany the sausages and beef steak. Just make sure you order it medium rare as it typically is served very rare here. Small selection but tasty selection of a liter of Prosecco, red or white wine.

Yelp
Very good food! My wife's favorite so far in all of Italy because she was able to get just meat and vegetables. So much of Italian food is heavy on the carbs and mostly from wheat. She desperately needed a change. I like to ask the locals where to eat. A man who was on duty to answer questions at one of the many churches told us about this place. It's self service, which can be a bit intimidating, but don't be afraid to ask for help. The staff is used to it. The food is delicious and reasonably priced. Meats are cooked on wood coals. The picture I posted is of a pear soaked in wine sauce. Fabulous! The picture does not do it justice.

Yelp
First time at Righetti's. Great experience and good food, I'll most certainly be back! Seafood pasta was excellent.

Yelp
I can't believe I am adding this restaurant on Yelp. It is clearly an old standby, hugely popular with students and locals alike. It's super affordable (pasta was less than €5), super unique (you set your own table and order like a cafeteria, though pasta is made fresh to order), and super fun (the Cabernet franc on tap is really cheap and, yes, self serve). The waitresses were very kind and helpful, one of the servers was surly, and the cashier was intensely speedy. Everything about this place is perfect. Except the food, that's just okay (for Italy, so still better than the States), but definitely good for a cheap bite or if you are with kids.

Yelp
A great place full of locals who know where to find delicious food. Lots of choices right in front of you - or made to order. The water and wine are all on tap and the choices range from pasta, fish, salad, beef, chicken, and even rabbit. Definitely worth stopping in for dinner with friends or family when you want a bunch of options with friendly service and an affordable price. Enjoy!

Yelp
This is definitely one of my favorite local restaurants. It's cafeteria style eating with an amazingly authentic old Italian atmosphere. I feel like I'm in a scene from the Godfather. The workers are friendly will assist (if you ask) in how to navigate using the restaurant. First thing you should do is establish your table. The foot traffic is heavy there and the tables fill up quickly. You will see placemats, silverware, and bread. Grab those and stick them on a table. Next grab a pitcher and get your water, wine, and glasses. Then return to the line to order your food. There are usually several pasta selections, one or two soup selections, a few meat selections, and some salad and veggies to chose from. When you are done you can come back and grab a desert. It is entirely an honor system there so be mindful of what you are ordering and make sure to make note of how much wine and water you take. It's so cheap that you will walk out satiated and ready for your stroll through the city.

Yelp
I miss Righetti every. single. day. I had the pleasure of living just down the block years ago. And come back whenever I'm in town. Some of the best food in Vicenza. Hell - in all of the Veneto. Menu changes daily. Fresh. Fresh. FRESH. Tourists: be respectful, go slow, be honest about your bill, relax

Seth C.

Yelp
Fresh food cooked while you wait. Pasta and soup menu changes daily with several choices. Meat, chicken and fish menu also varies. You select the cut and it is grilled by the chef. Vino di casa is 1 euro/ glass and also served. In half and full liters. Prices are LOW LOW LOW. Open Mon-Fri for lunch and dinner, closed weekends. No tourists only locals and savvy visitors. Grab your utensils and placemats, find a table then walk to the counters and order. No check when done just tell the guy on the register what you had. We eat there 1-2 times weekly.

Yelp
Cant say great fine dining. But more than decent food and wine at more than reasonable prices. Cafeteria style. Foods grilled to order Chicken pork sausages fish. Very good grilled veggies. Very bright. Many whole families (read children).

Yelp
We just arrived in Vicenza from Pittsburgh, Pa. and this was our first restaurant to visit and it was excellent! For three people and all the food we ate and wine was VERY reasonable.
