Gorgeous museum, with an interal viewing hall of the burial mounds opposite and a nice little shop. There are English translations of the information on the walls, which is helpful. And it has a copper lift inside, which looks spectacular. And we enjoyed stumbling upon the Takeover Day, which put school children in charge of the museum. They clearly loved it! What a great initiative.

This is a very historic and important place for Viking history. It’s a great place to get outside for a bit and enjoy nature and go for a hike. I rode a Ryde scooter out here from Uppsala and it only took about 15 minutes. Perhaps read up on the place in Wikipedia or elsewhere before you go to gain appreciation for the site. Free entry to walking trails. I did not go in the museum. Oh…and you can hike and ride bikes on trails around the mounds which is fun.

Here you can know the values of old history and the livelihood of the people from the Sweden. There is a spot where you can meet the people explaining the old ways and also very polite to interact with. It was a lovely experience.

This was the worst museum I have ever seen. I expected a lot from Gamla Uppsala Museum, but It was and orribile experience. Basically I paid 150SEK ti read things I could have find on internet. 90% of objects in the museum are replica, so they are not the original, and are also very bad. Rocks with runes are made in plastic and lots of description are just in Swedish language. There are also lots of objects not well cared for (e.g. in a Cup behind the glass there was a dead fly). I DO NOT RECOMMEND TO GO THERE, JUST SAVE YOUR MONEY AND TAKE INFORMATION ON INTERNET!!!

This is a great museum. Yes there are a lot of copies and yes there is a ton to read, but it is extremely interesting. Just give yourself enough time to walk around the mounts, read all and in the museum, just grab a chair and stop to read and watch the videos. If you will run through it, of course you'll have the impression it is a weak museum. Take your time. Believe me, you will learn a lot.

Caught one of the tours. Have lots of good information and answered a ton of questions from my kids. The parking lot is just before the Google directions to the site but an easy walk from the museum parking lot.

A little sparse, but a great view of the mounds, and I was grateful for the English translations.

Yelp
Medieval Scandinavians held Gamla Uppsala ("Old Uppsala") as one of the oldest and most important locations in Scandinavia. We visited Gamla Uppsala to visit the Viking burial mounds there last week when we were in Uppsala for a day. The three large mounds ("The Royal Mounds") date to the 5th and 6th centuries and were once thought to be resting places of the Norse gods the three gods Thor, Odin and Freyr. You can visit the museum, which provides helpful context when you walk around the burial mounds. It's two stories. Not huge, but not small. There are some interactive displays and everything in the museum was available in Swedish and English. Then take a walk around the mounds. It's pretty incredible to be somewhere with such history and meaning. It's well worth a visit to learn some medieval Scandinavian history!
