Riley's Fish Shack

Well worth the trek down to the beach for this. It's a little pricey and you'll most likely be eating on the deck chairs on the beach. But as far as the quality of the food goes - it's genuinely astonishing. Also, the beach setting is incredible, a really unique place to eat if you are up in the north east.

Absolutely stunning hidden gem. The food was fresh and delicious, we had the monkfish, cod and oysters and couldn't recommend it enough. The mixed salad was the perfect concoction on citrus, sweet, salty and rich with fragrant home made sauces. The fire pits on the beach are a nice touch making it a great venue to watch the sunset deep into the nighttime. Sea view is the cherry on top.

Visited for an early lunch on a cold sunny day. Service was good, but I can imagine when it’s busy it may be stretched. The Food was really exceptional. I really love the flavour combinations here and the quality of the ingredients is really very high. This place may not be absolutely perfect but it’s genuinely special and the food is truly unique. I really enjoyed my visit and booked a table during quieter time. My Onglet steak wrap was cooked perfectly and the portion was very generous. I’ve never really had anything like it before. I think overall this is one of the best places you can eat in the whole of the UK if you really want to enjoy the food and location.

What a wonderful setting with divine food to match. We sat on the veranda facing the sea and sand, which was pretty much the perfect view. Between us, we had oysters (local – juicy and plump), the crab souffle (to die for) and the fishcake for starters. Followed up with grilled brill and the side of potatoes, salad and fennel with sourdough. Originally planned to have dessert, but couldn't squeeze anything else in. Excellent service, stunning food. We come from Brighton and there's nothing like Riley's there.

We visited here after wanting to go for quite a while, and it did not disappoint. The weather was unseasonably warm for March and so the restaurant was busy which added great atmosphere. The food was amazing, we had Lindisfarne oysters to start followed by escabeche of red mullet and John Dory with crispy garlic and anchovy vinaigrette. The John Dory was amazing. All accompanied by a bottle of picpoul. We booked a table inside in advance as we were travelling specifically for the night with our two dogs.

I had vouchers to spend and we booked brunch for 10am on a Friday. A beautiful sunny day and what a place to enjoy it in. The steak breakfast was spot on. We had our pup with us and were given water for him as soon as we arrived. Pup was excited but well behaved and was treated so kindly by the team. We had a leisurely brunch in between dog walks on the sand and honestly could have stayed all morning. I have read some reviews with negative feedback on service however I couldn’t fault the 2 guys we spoke to. They were welcoming and friendly.

What a perfect day for food on the beach. The food was banging the staff were lovely & the atmosphere was perfect. You could have been on a beach in marbs with the view but you wouldn't get food this good. Will definitely be back before the summer ends

Went on a whim on a busy Sunday, had to wait until 12:30 to order food at the counter. After seeing the lines and the amount of people who had reserved seating, it’s easy to see why making a reservation is highly recommended! Once we did get our food, it was immediately clear that the wait was worth it. Amazingly well-cooked fish and delicious sides that hit the spot in every way. I ordered the plancha cod and my fiancée ordered the halibut chop with Thai red curry and both were sensational. The price is higher than an average for most fish places, but you can tell how much effort is put into the freshness and quality of the meal. Definitely worth a visit as a treat!

I loved Riley's pop-up shack on the Quayside, and have long wanted to try the original location. Riley's is a rustic little shack down by the sea, with gorgeous views of cliffs and waves, and great people (and dog!) watching. There's a bit of seating inside, and some stools outside facing the sea, but other than that you'll be taking your food to go and sitting somewhere along the beach to enjoy it. Which just adds to the atmosphere! We went on a chilly day and got a table inside. Checked the ever-changing chalkboard menu, and ordered the monkfish wrap, and the special (cod, haricot beans, and kale). Both came with a bunch of salads and potatoes, and their gorgeous fresh-baked bread. I will say that the food is not cheap - you are getting fresh seafood and paying proper restaurant prices for it - but it is delicious and prepared masterfully. All the sides are full of flavour and perfectly matched to the dish (they've got such gorgeous potatoes, mmmmm) and the seafood was lush, crispy skin, flaky fish, can't fault it. They have beer and wine too, what more do you want? I'm sure we'll be back many times in summer, but we'll be ready to queue - it was getting busy at 6 pm on a random chilly Tuesday in March, I can't imagine what it's like in July! It is a bit of a treat in terms of the price - my husband swears the prices in the pop-up shack were lower, not sure why - but definitely worth a visit when you're craving something healthy and amazing with a great view of the sea.

It's a 'tainer on the beach. Was a bit chilly but they have fires to warm up by. Had the smoked cod, bit pricier than I was expecting but was the best thing I ate on my trip to the UK.

We were staying in Tynemouth and our B&B hostess recommended this for a real local experience. Imagine being on a freezing beach sitting on the porch of a shack with a wood burning stove right next to you! You order fresh fish and they bring it out in a cardboard box with disposable wooden utensils. Everything was fresh and expertly prepared with spicy flavorful sauces and sides. They even had some good wines by the glass in plastic cups. They were also lighting bonfires on the beach next to some customers sitting on lounge chairs eating dinner. This is actually a really high quality restaurant with famous food. But the experience of eating in a shack on a cold beach is also a great part of the enjoyment.
