The attraction is free to visit. Keep in mind that the fountain is located in a passageway surrounded by many restaurants and shops. Consequently, it gets quite crowded, and you might have to wait a while to take a photo without people in it. I recommend stopping by if you're already in the city or if you're an architecture enthusiast, but I wouldn't make a special trip just for this from the other side of the island.

Honestly speaking, the Rimondi FountainClick to open side panel for more information is the absolute beating heart of Rethymno and a total 10/10 landmark that captures the town's Venetian soul perfectly. Built way back in 1626 by the Venetian governor Alvise Rimondi, this fountain was once the primary water source for the entire city and remains a superb, high-energy meeting point where locals and travelers naturally converge. It is tucked away in the narrow, winding alleys of the Old Town at Platanou Square, and stumbling upon it feels like a world-class discovery despite it being one of the most famous spots on the island. The architecture is simply first-class, featuring four Corinthian columns and three beautifully carved lion heads that still spout cool, refreshing water into marble basins. One thing only that makes this spot truly special is that the water is still potable today, which is a rare and superb historical feature. According to local legend, if you drink from the lion heads, you are guaranteed eternal youth or, as some locals say, you will be destined to marry someone from Rethymno. It is a total winner for a quick, high-energy break between shopping and sightseeing. Because it is an open-air public monument, it is completely free and accessible at any time of day or night, making it a total value for your time if you want to see it lit up after the sun goes down. Do one thing only and be prepared for the crowds, as this is easily the most photographed corner of the city and can get very packed with people trying to capture that perfect first-class selfie. The fountain is surrounded by vibrant cafes and tavernas where you can sit and enjoy the superb atmosphere, but keep in mind that the area is a high-traffic pedestrian zone. The stone pavement around the fountain has been polished smooth by millions of feet over the centuries and can be incredibly slippery, so wearing sturdy shoes with a proper rubber grip is a smart move. It is a raw, authentic, and deeply charming piece of history that remains a total winner for anyone visiting Crete.

Tucked away in the corner of a small square is the Rimondi Fountain, a small wonder built in 1629 by Avise Rimondi, the Venetian governor of Rethymnon. While the fountain isn't the largest monument left behind by the Venetians, it is nonetheless a testament to the Venetian legacy of Crete's history.

Lovely little old town with a good mix of new and old shops/restaurants. The people are lovely and cafés so welcoming. Prices are pretty much ok and there is always a good varied menu. Enjoy driving, it is one hell of an experience, if you live in Paris or Rome, you'll have no problem 🤣

Very pretty village, chilled atmosphere, nice shops, drink and freshen up at the fountain and people watch. Do visit the folk museum to the left of the fountain. It's free, tiny but packed with lovely antiquities, and hosted by a genuinely enthusiastic and welcoming host.

A beautiful mix of old and new in Rethymno. The fountain blends perfectly with the modern restaurants, and the small square is a lovely stop with plenty of shops and tavernas. Highly recommended!

Really nice and pretty, you don't need tickets to go there, you just see it, take pictures if you want and then go on with your trip.
