Best Hot Springs in Costa Rica

"Set in the foothills between the mountain town of Bagaces and the Miravalles Volcano, this remote hot-springs retreat features entirely natural springs with warm green water framed by dry forest and dramatic rock formations, making the setting unusually picturesque and appealing to travelers seeking a more rugged, scenic soak." - Ashley Harrell Ashley Harrell Ashley Harrell is a Northern California-based journalist who writes about the sea, wildlife, travel, and more. "The first thing guests notice as they approach the600-acre Rio Perdido ecolodge is a large wood-and-steel rotunda that, from a distance, resembles a flying saucer, an award-winning design that houses the resort’s open-air restaurant, bar, and spa. The bungalows are just as stylish: 30 prefabricated cubes are suspended on seven pylons (no trees were cleared during the building process) and feature an airy, modern aesthetic, with twin rolling beds, brass fixtures, and terraces with hammocks sited for gentle breezes. Larger suites are moodier and more romantic, with walls of singed wood and volcanic-stone floor tiles. Soak in the property’s natural springs, which are heated by the activity of nearby Miravalles Volcano, then choose your own adventure. If you’ve worked up an appetite hiking, tubing, or canyoneering, the restaurant serves satisfying Costa Rican casados (rice dishes) and ceviches, which guests can arrange to enjoy from a platform that sits 160 feet above the river that gives the property its name."

My husband and I came to Costa Rica for our honeymoon, we stayed at Rio Perdido for three nights. Immediately as we got there, we were greeted with world class hospitality and kindness. They made the check in process really special with a welcome drink and cool towels. Since we told them, it was our honeymoon, they had upgraded our room which was a very nice surprise!! My mother in law got us a “honeymoon” package that included champagne and the roses, it was such a special touch to the stay! From the amenities to the layout and design of the hotel, we deemed it one of the best hotels we’ve ever been too. The hotel is nestled into the forest, so you are completely surrounded by nature and wildlife which was so serene and peaceful. We saw many more animals right outside our room than we did in the national park. It was truly the best experience. The breakfast everyday was impeccable with a gorgeous view, the restaurant and staff were top notch. Some must tries are the woodfired pizza, the El Chorro cocktail and the jumbo shrimp and risotto dish. Specialty menu drinks the bartenders would make a specialty off menu drinks. We would ask him to surprise us and they made some of the best cocktails we’ve ever had. Wesley especially made fantastic drinks!! Manuel was also extremely friendly and showed us their tamarin making process and the fresh juice he created from it. The west bungalows are quite impressive, the room is huge with a large window looking out to the forest, with an outdoor shower and bathtub - The attention to detail is also what made her stay incredible as soon as we came back from breakfast every day our room was spotless. Overall, the experience was 12 out of 10, and we would recommend this to anyone. Also it was very easy to get to from Liberia airport.

My stay at Rio Perdido was nothing short of spectacular. While I'd be tempted to give them a 4.5 for a breakfast that was a bit basic (surprisingly, no toast!), the sheer magnificence of the property's grounds and the overall experience makes it impossible to fault them for long. This is a true 5-star resort. We initially booked a basic cabin but finally paid extra to upgrade to their largest West cabin. Highly recommend if within your budget. The premium cabin is the newest category, significantly larger, and features an incredible outdoor shower that makes you feel at one with the jungle. The added perks—like a free one-time snack basket and complimentary mini-bar, and an included garden tour was a nice addition. The most unforgettable feature is, without a doubt, their private thermal river. Wading through the warm, mineral-rich waters surrounded by lush jungle is a surreal and therapeutic experience. A must-do is the complimentary volcano mud treatment—slather yourself in the warm, smooth mud and then wash it all off in the river, leaving your skin feeling unbelievably soft. The resort offers a wide array of activities, and you should definitely sign up for a few. All are held within their massive, private 1200-acre reserve, ensuring a secluded and pristine adventure. We highly recommend the tubing; floating down the river through the canyon is both thrilling and serene. The food at the resort's restaurant is elevated, creative, and delicious. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the pricing was actually quite reasonable, especially when compared to local restaurants outside the property. We had an absolutely wonderful time and would return in a heartbeat, if only to spend another day relaxing in that magical thermal river. Rio Perdido is a very special place.

My fiancée and I had the most wonderful time at Rio Perdido. The staff is delightful and the food is delicious. From hiking and sitting in the hot springs to yoga and a spa day, there’s also so much to enjoy.

If I could give 10 stars, I would! We came here for the first 5 days of our honeymoon & it was the most pleasant experience. After our stay here, we went to another boutique hotel in Tamarindo & kept saying we should’ve visited Rio Perdido second because everything here blew the second place we stayed at out of the water & we found ourselves comparing EVERYTHING at our second resort to Rio Perdido. We have never experienced such an intimate and high level of hospitality from check in to check out - the way everyone treats you here (golf cart drivers, reception, housekeeping, bartenders, waiters, excursion staff) makes you feel like a celebrity. They remembered our room number and names after just a day. The food was absolutely amazing - we were blown away with all of the meals and the free breakfast was phenomenal. We loved how we were able to do so much without ever leaving the larger property - it made for a very stress free honeymoon experience. We had the best drinks we’ve had in our life crafted with so much love from the bartenders - specifically Carlos, Alex, Enjeel, & Ronald (pro tip: ask all of them to make you their favorite drink and you won’t be disappointed)! We have already recommended this place to our friends & family & can’t wait to come back. We enjoyed all of the excursions - while they were pricey, it was worth it to not really have to lift a finger with getting to/from places. We did the barista class with Carlos & loved it, a couples massage, the sunrise mountain biking (honestly it was very difficult but Oscar made it a blast regardless), visited the thermal river, did the complimentary yoga & hike, and the White Water tubing which was great (& all the guides made it so much more fun). We loved our room & despite a small snake that made its way into our outdoor shower (which you kind of have to expect), we loved how unique the bungalows were & how we truly felt like we had escaped to the middle of nowhere. We can’t wait to come back!

This latest trip to Rio Perdido was my third and it will definitely not be my last. I always take immense pleasure staying there, surrounded by nature as far as the eye can see. Enjoying the natural hot waters of the Rio Perdido, and the beautiful sunrises and sunsets. I had previously stayed in an East bungalow and loved how cosy they are, and this time I got to experience both Center and East Bungalows! I could not recommend the East Bungalows enough!! The level of comfort is unparalleled and the simplicity and warmth of the decor brings a fantastic level of serenity to your stay. I particularly enjoyed waking up surrounded by trees and enjoying a nice cup of coffee (freshly brewed) as soon as I got out of bed, right before hopping in the outdoor showers. I took the time to run around their trails with a good friend of mine (who was on a mountain bike) for over 3 hours without using the same path twice, and I also experienced their in house zipline, which was a blast! And of course, the food! What a treat! Breakfasts, lunches and dinners were always delicious, thanks to their very skilled local Chefs (Sara Michelle) who took care of us, and dinners were always accompanied by the perfect cocktails as well. Truly an unforgettable experience that I hope come back to soon.

My husband and I visited this hotel in June 2023 and we cannot wait to go back! We thoroughly enjoyed our experience there, all of the staff, the activities, and the food and drinks. We would absolutely go back in a heartbeat! The rooms were very clean. the air conditioning worked great, and they were modern and comfortable. The view from the rooms was gorgeous and we loved spending time on the hammock on the porch. It felt private and safe. If needed, at night, the staff would drive you back to your room in a golf cart since it was about a five minute walk. The food and drinks were absolutely amazing. Every single thing we tried was delicious, and it always felt like there was something new to try. The bartenders would even make custom drinks for you per request, and they were all incredibly talented and friendly. At first we were a little bit worried because you can only eat at the restaurant they have on site, but even if we had the option to go somewhere else we would’ve definitely still ate at Rio Perdido. I am vegetarian, but my husband is not, and there were plenty of options that we both enjoyed. Even the desserts were phenomenal! We spent most of our time by the pool, eating and drinking, and just being outside in nature, and enjoying the use of the jungle was so peaceful and enjoyable. The hotel is a family friendly hotel, but even being a couple with no kids, we felt like it was still very peaceful and we enjoyed all of the other people that were there. We both got a massage and it was soooooo relaxing and the staff was very accommodating. When you’re getting a massage, you can feel the breeze from the jungle and you can hear the fountains by the pool which was nice. We also took advantage of the various hikes on site and the yoga classes. This was so much fun to do and you didn’t have to deal with any other tourists. The hikes and the yoga classes are all private, and only guests can access them. Again the scenery was absolutely gorgeous, and felt private. The yoga classes were equally relaxing and challenging, but the best part about them was the location as you felt like you were in a treehouse above the river. The only paid activity we took advantage of on site was the zip lining, and that was so much fun! The staff made it feel enjoyable and safe, and we would do it again in a heartbeat. It was also so nice to have it on site because you walked just a couple of feet to the starting point and you were done in about an hour. Again, I can’t say enough about this hotel and I can’t wait to go back. I also can’t speak highly enough about the staff, as everyone was extremely kind, accommodating and friendly! Especially the bartenders and welcome staff. Can’t wait to go back!

Perfect luxury stay in the middle of the dry forest. Nice activities and great ambiente. Friendly staff and fantastic cocktails. Were there for only 2 nights in April 2023 (swiss couple) Only negative point: breakfast is not really good. Selection is very limited and if you have it included you can only select 1 dish per person and in addition you are getting a fruit plate and a juice. Portion is very small and food wasn't really good - it is not made with love. Compared to lunch and dinner which both were absolutely outstanding. Would be easy to do this better too, like offering different egg variations and include the offering completely as there is no alternative to get breakfast... Also fruit platter is 2 slices of pineapple and 2 slices of watermelon, rather skip that, like this it looks like nothing. Rest was awesome, food is really nice! And zip line was really fun and you feel save with the instructors. Also hikes are beautiful. The tubing was more lazy tubing but nice and the guides were really fun. And a MUST is the cocktail experience - you really need to book this.
