After a carbo-loaded visit to Rome, we arrived in Monterosso craving something a little lighter and more protein focused. Good thing there are plenty of seafood restaurants to choose from in this relatively small town. With all of these options on this particular night, we (not kidding) pretty much just started walking, following the smell of good food until we hit Belvedere. We were also looking for something on the water, so that box was checked as well.
We grabbed a table outside, which was under a covered awning (good because it was chilly out) and could see and hear the sea during our entire meal, even after it got dark.
We split a garden salad to start, dipped plenty of bread (so much for avoiding carbs) in oil and vinegar, and ordered both the bronzino and black and white pasta (carbs again) with mussels in a red sauce. The fish was excellent, fresh, drenched in lemon that was very likely grown no less than 50 feet away, and this dish was the perfect complement to the homemade pasta and red sauce.
We split a bottle of local Chianti, and took our time finishing up. We were too full for dessert, though it seemed like most of the people around us got something, and it all looked excellent.
This spot is great--really good, fresh food, a nice view of the sea, and it's big enough that you probably won't have to wait long during the busy season. Since we came before that season started, we could have had 8 tables to ourselves, no problem at all.
Yes, all 8 tables need bread (carbs) to start.
