Gallo D'Oro is an upscale restaurant in old town Parma, with a very nice atmosphere and a good, if somewhat pricey menu. It was quite crowded, but we managed to snag what seemed to be the only table in the enclosed front patio. The patio is most likely open when the temperature warms up, but that wasn't the case on this chilly night.
Because we were in the patio area, decor was kind of plain, but up half a flight of stairs is the main dining room, and it's a warm and inviting old-world beauty.
Unfortunately for us (but good for our wallet), we'd had drinks at a bar in the main plaza not long earlier, and drinks in this part of Italy come with half a meal! I don't know how the Italians eat all that delicious snack food and then go out to eat a full dinner. So we weren't all that hungry. But staying in a hotel means you don't get to eat until the next morning, so we didn't go whole hog.
We shared an appetizer of Giant Pumpkin Ravioli. I thought it was going to be a zucchini filling because, at least in Spanish, it's the same word for pumpkin and zucchini; but no, it had real pumpkin filling and was covered with a delicious and very rich sauce. It was definitely home-made pasta, and wonderful. "Filling" was the key word, because by the time we finished it, we were almost too full to enjoy the two glasses of Frizzante wine and the sauteed spinach and zucchini that we'd ordered along with it. But we managed, because that, too, was delicious.
We had a great time with the food and during the very long conversation we had with the two young Italian ladies seated next to us, and regret that we couldn't get to try some of their main courses.
Note: the patio area is handicapped-accessible. Just make sure you don't have to use the bathroom!!
