An excellent restaurant located in the medieval part of Orvieto. Immersed in old cellars and rock chambers of the southern slope. The impression at the entrance is electrifying and it only gets better from there. The menu includes extraordinary compositions based on simple, local specialties, but combined in a surprising way. That's why I decided to have pasta with fennel sauce and black cabbage chips. I have to admit that it was the best vegetarian restaurant dish I've ever eaten. On the menu it looked almost banal, but in taste it turned out to be refined and original. In addition, I ordered top quality beef slices with grilled vegetables which I also highly recommend. A beautiful, authentic experience.

My lovely and I enjoyed lunch here with family and friends in 2005 and had a wonderful experience. It was with some trepidation that we returned one score later as we had no desire to diminish the memory. It brings me great joy to report dear reader that Le Grotte del Funaro has lost none of its magic. We had emailed in advance to reserve a table and were delighted to be seated by the window. A view of the rolling Umbrian hills is a glorious adjunct to proceedings. We started with the delightfully fresh panzanella before moving on to the sea bass and the suckling pig with roast potatoes. Both of these were a testament to the ease with which Italian hill top towns producing amazing dish after amazing dish. Washed down with a local bottle of Orvieto rossi this was another meal to remember. We will be back in 2045!

Loved it ! Totally a must do when in Orvieto Located within a underground cave in italy this was the place to visit for our one night stay in Orvieto Before you arrive and enter the restaurant the location is high and you look over the valley which is just amazing view We arrived in sunset and this was extra special - the best time for a photo The staff very kind - we booked and then changed our time due to getting drinks earlier but they were happy to accommodate us which was kind Food was excellent - wine great and bring within a cave very unique Orvieto is a small city perched on a rock cliff in Umbria, Italy. Duomo di Orvieto, dating from 1290, has a mosaic facade and houses a marble Pietà sculpture. The Pozzo di San Patrizio is a 16th-century - Orvieto has many hidden caves but this is the only one with a restaurant within side a cave Very unique - great food and unforgettable night

Amazing opportunity to eat in a place inhabited for 2500 years. Wow! Other restaurants in Orvieto serve slightly better food and this is mainly a tourist attraction, but service is better than in most Italian restaurants where waiters tend to leave you alone for a little too long. The ambiance of eating in an ancient cave is hard to beat.

Very delicious food, perfect for people who like truffle. I had no problems with this restaurant. The price is perfect, I ate a lot with my father and we only paid 90€. The service is good too.

Had our lunch here, superb tasting, vegetables soup is wholesome, the chicken dish was very well seasoned and the chocolate mousse was exceptionally tasty. Overall the waiters are good and accommodate to our request. Ambience is quite nice and historic.

Another fortunate discovery for us in Orvieto. And very near to our hotel. We had gone to the same restaurant for three of our first four nights and last night decided to try something new. And are we glad we did! The restaurant has an enormous underground grotto where most people eat but we sat on the lovely patio, with a view of the countryside. From our first bite to our last, we were beyond thrilled to have discovered this place. For antipasti we had Panzanella and the Zucchini tartare. Both refreshing and flavourful ( everything tastes better in Italy!) then our pastas were nothing short of spectacular. Maltagliati with artichokes and Tagliatelle with lemon, lime, ginger and pink peppercorns. Again, beautifully served and delicious. We had an apple crumble and a coffee bavarois. A fitting finish to an incredible meal. And our server was lovely and very helpful. We loved it so much that we made reservations for dinner there again tonight!

It is ok, but not a place to come back. The reason we stopped for dinner here is you can watch the sunset from the wall a hundred feet away. The food (especially the spigola) is over salted, probably to mark the deficiencies of preparation, the pasta is so do, and the sauce (cinghiale) is over-salted too. People at the next table were quite happy, though. So it might be just a personal preference.

Yelp
Set in an underground grotto, the ambiance of this restaurant is cozy and beautiful. Combined with warm lighting and local hospitality and you have a dining experience that is uniquely Orvietan. Pizzas are their best items! We had the Gorgonzola and Pear pizza and it was divine! The two meat dishes were just okay - the Guinea Fowl and the suckling pig were both flavorful but a bit dry. The chocolate cake was nicely done! I'd say that and the pizza made our meal most enjoyable! Impeccable service!

Yelp
Shared some food with friends, pizza and ravioli were great! Had a dish with eggplant and it was a little bland. Service was great! Friendly and attentive. I would recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
I have no idea why this place is not swarming with reviews. This was by far the best Italian food I had during my trip. You're in for a treat with top notch goodies. Pasta is all handmade on premises and I ate everything risking myself to EXPLODE!!! Seriously it's so good you will be in pain, look at each other and say what the hell one more bite and it becomes agonizing enjoyment. Every bite was...OMG and the next dish OMG!!!! You will sound like Meg Ryan in no time. If you're in Orvieto go there! I promise you!

Yelp
This place is simply amazing. The staff was so wonderful! I was a little bit reluctant about going here with a child as it looked so chic and polished but the staff was so sweet to our little one it made the dining experience extra nice. Here they are very proud of the products from Orvieto. How right they are! We started with a meat platter. I loved the boar ham. Something like prosciutto crudo. The boar salami was very good. Then. The. Pasta! Here they make it themselves and we could even watch that one guy who was folding dough and shaping it into umbricelli. It was fantastic! I was craving truffles so I went for the black truffle version. Little did I know that one dish sounding so simple like umbricelli with salsiccia sausage and tomatoes would be such a strong competitor for the king of mushrooms! It was simply to die for. On the menu they called it funaro or something similar. It's simple but spectacular. Thereafter I had a carpaccio of Chianina beef and was so happy after my first bite. My mood only changed when I tried the suckling pig from a different plate: again, to die for! It was so good! And with an interesting twist due to a hint of cumin. Of course we had wine, white: Orvieto originale. Red: a local Sangiovese. Both were recommended and I would recommend them too. The cave is centuries old and was shaped by hand. Knowing that really adds to the atmosphere. If you feel claustrophobic or the weather is just too nice then you can opt for the terrace. Long thing short: eat here. And the staff is adorable.

Yelp
Found in Yelp and wow did we get lucky!! This place was in the heart of rolling hills in San Gimignano. It overlooked the countryside as we had dinner in the terrace. The view was amazing as the sunset. Dinner was extraordinary. Had four course meal and enjoyed every dish. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Le grotte has amazing food and great service! Very cool atmosphere. We got the margarita pizza and one of the best pizzas I've ever had, very thin. We got salad, risotto, and pasta.

Yelp
We went for lunch. The pizza is fantastic! I got the Funaro pizza (it has a fried egg on it) and I would highly recommend it. Very reasonable prices as well. Our server really didn't speak much English, but it was fine. The ambiance of the restaurant is also very unique since it's in a cave.

Yelp
I wanted pizza while in Italy. I'm glad we chose this restaurant. I had red sauce, sausage, spicy salami, and no cheese. It was excellent! We also had the mix bruschetta and another one with beans and bacon on wheat. They were both wonderful. If we were going to be here long we would definitely return. Service was excellent also, our waiter spoke good English and wasvery interactive with us about the menu

Yelp
We decided to try this restaurant based on the reviews online. Unfortunately, we had a very disappointing experience. We were seated in one of the two rooms of the restaurant reminiscent of a cave (hence the name). The room was already occupied by a large, very loud and obnoxious group of 30 teenagers and their teachers who apparently did not care of the inappropriate behavior of their students. As we have heard great things about the food, we decided to stay. Big mistake! We could hardly hear each other when attempting to conduct a conversation. In vain did we and the couples at the other two tables looked towards the teachers' and students' tables hoping they would get the hint. The staff (1 server and a helper) were running around obviously overwhelmed. We waited a long time to give our dinner order and then for the food to be served. Finally, after 1 hour of being in the restaurant, we got to enjoy some appetizers. The food was ok, but not as good as to be worth such a wait and putting up with the obnoxious behavior of the large group. My suggestion for you is to avoid this restaurant when you see that they have accommodated yet another big group thus compromising on the quality of service and the overall experience for the rest of their customers. Shame on management for not bringing more help and for trying to cram up as many tourists as possible in one room that should have been dedicated to this big group alone.
