So many times the restaurants closest to a town's mass trans hubs are places to grab a quick, cheap bite that is just so-so. We were on our way to the Greve Chianti festival and passed by La Cantina without giving it much of a glance. We got to the square and realized we were hungry and figured it'd be best to get some food before drinking a bucket of Chianti. We sat down at one restaurant on the square and we were ignored for 20-minutes and saw other diners being ignored, too.
So we left and headed to La Cantina. It was very busy and the manager made sure to acknowledge our presence right away to say we'd get a table in minutes. He and one other server worked like maniacs in the tight quarters of the outdoor seating area.
There is a coperta, but we got a nice glass of prosecco and some baked dough snacks and dessert for it.
My bf and I both ordered a pizza. They were huuuuuuge! We really only needed one! The crust was super-crispy, the sauce was tangy and the toppings were very fresh. Really delicious. As a dessert they gave us small samples of 3-desserts, which was a perfect way to end the meal. If you eat outside, you pay inside.
I added a star because after the wine festival, I really needed to use the facilities before the hour-long bus ride back to Florence. When I walked up to La Cantina, the manager recognized me from earlier and ushered me into the restaurant. I grabbed his arm and said "Grazie, grazie!!!!" because I was desperate! When I was finished I offered up a euro on the counter, but he pushed it back and said something in Italian that I took to mean, "don't worry about it". That was very nice of him. Oh, and he's big on fist bumps, so prepare to bump back!
