Where to Eat and Drink in Portofino, Italy

"An intimate harborside seafood taverna that focuses on fresh catches, local wines, and attentive service; recipes are inspired by the owners’ great-grandmother, Santa Schiaffino. Crispy calamari and spaghetti ai frutti di mare are top sellers, and the setting feels more low-key and personal than the pricier nearby sibling restaurants frequented by celebrities." - Kristy Alpert

Google
Pretty good, but nothing very special. I ordered the sole and it came just with a quarter of a potatoe as a side. Wine was very reasonably priced , we had a 35 euros bottle of red and it was very good. Location is nice though.

The food here is excellent! I really enjoyed the freshness of every dish — full of flavor, rich, and absolutely delicious.

Google
Very nice restaurant right by the seaside with an incredible view of Portofino! The staff was very friendly and the food came fast. It was super delicious and looked good as well. Overall, I enjoyed it a lot!

Google
Beautiful views and amazing staff. It feels like it is straight out of a movie. The food was excellent and we could tell it was homemade pasta. I would live to visit again and it is worth your time and money. As they say.. you pay for the sun.

Google
Delicious and fresh pasta dishes! Amazing location and lovely service. We ordered the mussels for our appetizer, and the sauce was amazing. Loved it! You must try their pesto trofie pasta which made me look at pesto with different eyes. I am giving 4 stars for the atmosphere because we were seated at a table in the hallway and did not really experience the place the same way as people who were seated on the terrace.

Google
Absolutely fantastic! The food was fresh, flavorful, and truly authentic! The owners are incredibly kind and welcoming, making the whole experience feel like dining with family. The view- an Italian postcard. A must-visit in Portofino!

Google
We were refused of 2 restaurants on the port because no reservation. We found this one a bit at the end of the port on a more quite and lovely side. Fish and pasta and cappuccino were delicious. Good service as well.

Yelp
Nice restaurant spot on the water in Portofino. Delicious fresh pasta. We had the pesto pasta and the penne pasta with tomatoes, olives and eggplant.

Yelp
Walked to this charming trattoria on the Main Street in Santa Margherita. We had a reservation (necessary!) and we're given a cute patio table with a view of the passersby. Service was prompt and efficient, prices super-reasonable, and the food DELICIOUS! I had linguine vongole and my daughter had the fish. The bread was so good - little rolls that were crunchy outside and soft interior. (They have a 2nd location in Portofino)

Yelp
Four of us stopped here for dinner. The food was excellent, especially the fish with green sauce. The prices were fair for this region. We found the service from the owners to be friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend.

Yelp
We loved our dinner at this unassuming waterfront spot. The pasta was superb and the bronzino was delicious. I don't know what they put in the simple sauce was it was fantabulous!!!

Yelp
On March 25, I came to Taverna Del Marinaio with my friend. We sat in the 2nd row from the road and asked if the table next to us cleared, we could move there. The guests at that table seem to be finishing up. We just wanted to be closer to the view but we were told there was no room and the kitchen closed in 15 minutes. We took the table in the second row, this was no problem. We ordered our lunch and water, we chose not to have alcoholic drinks and immediately recognized the owners dissatisfaction towards our choice. When our food arrived, we wanted to take a photo ( as tourists and everyone in the world does nowadays) and the owner told us 'the food is going cold'. A selfie takes 20 seconds MAX. Our pasta was not going to be cold in that time. His need to make a comment was shocking, did he tell each guest how they should eat their food? After our lunch, we were asked if we wanted to have a coffee and desert, my friend and I were discussing what to eat. Meanwhile my friend was checking her phone for an email. He needed us to order and leave quickly, that was clear. My friend finally said ' If you allow us to make a decision, let us think about it and we will get back to you'. At first he agreed , came back a minute later and said 'This is my job, of course I'll ask. If you don't want, you can go.' Then the other lady came and said, "Get out of here, I don't want you here." While we were trying to explain our problem without understanding what we were going through, he officially insulted us by saying, "Don't pay, I know people like you, you are doing this to avoid paying bills." Meanwhile, when her husband, who constantly harassed us by coming to the table, gestured to us, we got up from the table demanding the bill and went into the restaurant. They wanted to get rid of us so badly he even said 'Give 20 euros, go, give 10 euros, go, don't give money'. They asked us where we were from and this is where I knew they had a problem with us from the beginning. We told them we were Turkish and they laughed in our faces. They said they were not surprised at all and that Turks always do the same thing. It was obvious from the beginning, the comments about the table, kitchen hours, telling us how to eat, and now they were causing a scene in front of all their guests. Do they not realise how bad they looked? When we pointed out the blatant xenophobia, they told us about their Morrocan employees, as if that changes how they were treating us. They threatened to call the police and I agreed, I wanted to talk to the police about this situation. We did nothing wrong and they treated us like criminals. As the insults and shouting continued, we left the restaurant. We have visited over 65 countries and we work in respectable places in Turkey, although this shouldn't matter. They should treat each guest equally, with respect and kindness. Italians are known for their hospitality and what we experienced was so heartbreaking. Although the food is very good, we can say Taverna Del Marinaio is absolute disgrace.

Yelp
Fabulous location, fantastic views, great service and great food make for a great restaurant, in my opinion. This place has it all :-)) It was a place my wife picked for dinner and, we booked through our hotel to go here. Glad we reserved as, there was at least 4-6 people waiting for tables for the whole time we were there. A very popular restaurant with the locals and other Italians, it would seem. Ok, Portofino is not a cheap place so comparing prices performance to other places is simply not possible. That aside, it was one of my best seafood meals in a long while. I ordered the antipasti della casa which came with Anchovies on roasted peppers, octopus Genovese with pesto, swordfish ceviche, grilled squid, smoked Tuna and some zucchini cake. It was a wonderfully fresh, light flavoured dish and I was extremely impressed. For main I had the local Gamberoni al Forno, big prawns caught locally and pan fried with a lemon butter sauce. This dish was divine and the prawns were cooked to perfection :-) Dessert was chocolate cake and it was also excellent. The only negative here is that they were trying to rush people so that, they could make the tables available for the next group and so on. Other than that service was excellent and the owner walked around and said hello to all. If you looked around the piazza you could see that this was probably one of the busiest restaurants as, many of the others had empty tables all evening long. I would love to be a regular here for their seafood. Cooking great seafood is truly an art and these guys have managed it very well. Loved every bit of my meal. Considering this is a tourist location I was totally surprised by the quality.

Yelp
Very overpriced, rude to tourists. Save your money keep walking. Go further down by the marina across the way. Much livelier atmosphere, and prices are less and staff is friendly to tourists, not arrogant and annoyed like this place.

Yelp
A lot of mediocre food in Santa Margarita. This place was the exception. The spaghetti and clams, shrimp dish, salted anchovies, steak with peppercorn sauce were our favorites. Try to book an outdoor seat. Too stuffy inside.

Yelp
We were trying to get a reservation for a different restaurant, but it was a Wednesday and many were closed. Our hotel manager told us this place was very authentic and family owned and quite good. Well he was right, we had an unforgettable dinner there. The atmosphere was very romantic sitting right by the water and the restaurant was quaint and warm. The service, very friendly, and the food was delicious. The only thing I was sad about is I didn't see Mandilli de seta (lasagne noodles with pesto) on the menu and I really wanted to try it - but then I saw the people next to us with it so I suggest asking for it because it looked heavenly. The pasta we had was fresh and cooked perfectly. The mussels were also fresh and delicious. Their "Apple pie" was a show stopper. It reminded me of jewish Apple cake. Dining here really made our Portofino experience memorable and they even gave us something special to take home. We are thankful for their hospitality!

Yelp
Does anyone know what restaurants are open on December 8th, 2017 during the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Thank you Qualcuno sa che i ristoranti sono aperti l'8 dicembre 2017 durante la festa dell'Immacolata Concezione. Grazie..

Yelp
Loved the house antipasti. Unfortunately I was full- so I didn't get a chance to try the fish on the menu that I was eyeing...will have to come back again :)

Yelp
Gracious service, very accommodating. My wife and I stopped here for a very late dinner. The food was excellent and the staff were attentive. The fish soup and linguine with Swordfish sauce were both out of this world. Very reasonably priced.

Yelp
We stopped by to just have dessert but the waitress was insulting . She said you know this is a restaurant? Then proceeded to take away our napkins and other utensils. There was no crowd, open tables and made us feel very uncomfortable. We got up, paid for our dessert order before she brought it and walked out. Very very bad personality and unwelcoming.

Yelp
We arrived here on a recommendation from our hotel. The hotel was supposed to make a reservation, however, we arrived at the restaurant before they booked it .It was completely empty so we figured they would have an open table. Yet, the owner told us they were fully booked. A few minutes after we left the place, we called the hotel and they had forgotten to book it, so they called the restaurant and got us a table. We returned and sure enough they gave us a table. The waiter who saw the whole thing unfold apologized profoundly. Another lady came and told us we were so lucky to get a table ....huh? Go figure...! However, I have mixed feelings about this incident...later on, another customer arrived with no reservation and although they didn't sit them in the patio the owner offered them a table inside...not sure if I will come back or recommend this place due this incident. BUT, if you decide to go here, here is my review about the food :) We ordered a prosciutto with melon, it was good, nothing special. My husband ordered Sole and it was really good and I ordered a Risotto with curry and prawns. The flavor was really good, but there there were only ~2 prawns cut into several pieces which was a bit disappointing. I didn't have wine but my husband said their selection was average. Finally, our dessert of panera and apple tart was good. I gave them three stars since the food was good and the waiter apologized profoundly (not the owner). All and all good food, front of the house poor, staff was nice.

Yelp
Great location, good food, nice folks. Dined outside on a beautiful October evening overlooking the marina. We both opted for pasta. The spaghetti Pomodoro, while very simple was also very flavorful--enough seasoning to elevate the rich tomato flavor but never overpower it. A similar deft touch with the pesto gnocchi, which tasted pretty fresh with strong but not too-strong flavors of garlic and pine nuts trading off the lead. Price was reasonable and our waiter was very nice and very attentive. The inside is a charming spot, too but we did not eat in there.

Yelp
Great service, pasta, fish, wine, location. I cannot say enough good things about it. All seven of us loved it. We agreed it was our best meal in Italy.
