My wife and I both grew up in WI and have been camping many times and in many locations around the Midwest. On this occasion she wanted to go camping in the Dells for her birthday and her family was also coming. After doing some looking we decided to find campsites with a water front view. We found the River Bay Campsites and one other; River bay had a reported 'adult' only section. The photographs of the "adult" only section in the water front area looked really nice with a view of the river and so we booked our 2 night stay.
This is where we should have had our 1st indication things were not going to occur without incident. They required a credit card payment of either the full amount or half now and EXACT cash for the other half on arrival. They could not take credit card, check or anything other then exact cash with change at the camp site. We paid in full by credit card for 2 campsites.
Upon arriving we found out the only real showers and bathrooms are at the main entrance, no where near the tent campsites and they charged for showers. The staff was friendly enough, however, did not listen to a thing we said as we kept mentioning we were from WI and they kept saying how nice it was we could visit WI from Chicago. We have never lived in Chicago or Illinois. Then they drove us back to our water front campsite. This is were we realized we had been sold a fake bill of goods.
First of all,the campsites are very small and packed in like sardines. The only saving grace was that most of the sites were empty. Had they been full we would have left immediately since we have no desire it feel like we're camping in a row home.
2nd, the water front view.... They should have shown a picture of a heavily wooded bank over looking and right near a large public marina. The public docks were 50 feet from the river bank and ran the length of the 'river front' campsites.
3rd, our campsite and most that we could see, had large areas of sand, dead grass and mud. This is likely due to the tiny campsites forcing people to camp and park in the same areas killing all the grass. 1 of our 2 campsites was a giant mud and sand pit. It was unusable. Fortunately our 2nd campsite had enough grass we were able to setup an 8 person tent for EVERYONE in our group to use.
We made do with this and everything continued fairly well. There was 1 occupied campsite next to us and several across the road in the center circle of our area. Once night came our troubles began....
Our site/area was one of the farthest from the bar. Yes, the campground has a bar. Never again... despite being one of the farthest campsites away, probably 150 yards, we could clearly hear the karaoke from the bar well past 1 am. That was only a small portion of the troubles. The campsites in the middle of our areas circle decided to relive their drunken beer pong wild frat parting days and invited other campers from somewhere else to join in the absurdity. Needless to say they partied, screamed, shouted, and 'played' until 6 am. It was so loud a campsite by the bar (150 yards away) also complained. Needless to say, we could not sleep and can tell you about every conversation they had including those about the men and women that were already passed out from being overly intoxicated. They also somehow got a hold of a golf cart and drove it around with reckless drunken abandon to the point we were waiting for one of them to hit one of our cars. As the party ended they agreed to meet for round 2 the next night.
At 1 am we attempted to call the front desk to complain. As expected we got a voicemail that had an emergency phone number which we called 3 times. Each time it went directly to voicemail and did not leave any other emergency numbers to call.
After not sleeping for the night my wife went to the front desk. The people there did not care we had not slept and were upset. They did inform us quiet hours were from either 10pm or 11pm to 8 am. They were not sure when it started and nowhere was it listed, we looked. They cared more about how the drunken group got a hold of golf cart and even asked us how they got it... as though we would know how a group of heavily drunken obnoxious strangers got it. They were also very upset we called the emergency number and told us we were not supposed to be calling that number. If that's not the emergency number and goes directly to voicemail then why is it listed.... we were told we should have contacted the BAR and asked for the owner. This information was listed nowhere and aside from being psychic we never would have figured this out. Also, we were told the front desk staff could not do anything about this other than take the report. The owner would have to deal with this. She also explained that if it was not resolved the 2nd night we would be calling the local police number and having them deal with the issue since the staff and owner could not be bothered.
