On the Grid : River Oaks Theater

"This Art Deco theater has been showing films since the late thirties. It might be small by today's theater standards, but it's the place to see independent and foreign language films. In addition to their regular screenings, they host midnight movie showings of cult classics like Rocky Horror Picture Show and Akira. You'll always find us there when a Miyazaki film is playing, subbed…naturally." - Curiosity and Curiosities

It would be nice if parking was free for pickup and go. This is a congested shopping center but it has a lot of upscale places to eat and shops. Be prepared to be patient as turning in can sometimes take time.

River Oak shopping is undoubtedly the epitome of high-end elegance in Houston. The plethora of brand new and fancy restaurants, with a special mention to Cocody, contributes to an exquisite dining experience. The commitment to cleanliness and organization is commendable, creating a pleasant environment. The array of fun activities for families and adults, including leisurely walks down the charming couple street, enhances the overall appeal. Barnes & Noble, boasting one of the largest collections in town, offers a delightful escape for coffee enthusiasts and magazine readers. The diverse shopping options, from pottery to specialty sprays, add to the allure. The presence of Italian and brunch restaurants, coupled with beautiful scenery, makes every visit memorable. Highly recommended for those seeking a sophisticated and enjoyable shopping experience—I'll certainly be returning.

Used to go here much more frequently. I hadn't been lately and actually forgot why...then pulling into a largely empty parking lot I remembered why I rarely go to this center anymore: you have to pay to park! I turned around and went somewhere else. This isn't downtown; parking here used to be fine. Not anymore. I'm not going to pay to park for the "privilege" of giving your businesses my money. In an age when you should want and need people to visit your physical shopping location, you are running people away! Who is running this shopping center? Wow, so dumb, doing your center long term damage. Sorry, River Oaks SC, I used to know you, but not again until free parking is returned to this otherwise beautiful outdoor mall. Looks like a lot of others agree.

A very nice classy shopping center. It’s beautiful during the day with nice stores, cafes, restaurants, movie theater. Evenings are just as nice. Feels safe. Nicely lit area at night

Looking pretty much tired, old and a little run down these days. Shame as it this area used to be a prestigious area in Houston for shopping and eating but sadly it seems to be in decline and badly in need of some TLC and possibly a face lift.

Google
Area has decent stores, but good luck finding parking. When you do find parking, you will be paying for it if you stay longer than 30 minutes.

Love the staff! Renovated and intimate! There are more stairs than I remember but lovely still

Great to hear about the come back. The first movie I saw was "for your eyes only" when I was 14. And at that time it was next door to the ones a meal.

Yelp
The stream didn't send her, neither did the ocean... the river center. This is an extremely fancy Shopping Center which we come to fairly regularly. It's beautiful with perfectly paved and plentiful parking lots, and they're building a bunch of skyscrapers around here too, which adds to the ambience. It's definitely a nice place to shop, even though it's expensive and high-end., but there is an average-price old-looking Kroger here, which might help.

Yelp
River Oaks Shopping Center is located near intersection of Gray and Shepherd. In my opinion, it's a lovely shopping center but not enough parking spaces. The traffic on surrounding streets are always ridiculous. I always see drivers speeding at intersections and not a single cop in the area. There's an apartment right behind the mall and they've got a nasty no parking sign. I think they need to build a wall to block the view from the mall into the apartment. I avoid coming to River Oaks Shopping Center. PERIOD.

Yelp
Something for everyone! Luke's Locker - for the days you are taking running seriously River Oaks Theatre - c'mon, with the Angelika long gone there is nowhere else to go Starbucks - indecisive? There are so many you can't choose wrong Marfreless - get your drink & your people watching on at the same time Krogers - such a better beer selection than Randalls Swirll - froyo super happy fun time Americas River Oaks - fancy and good California Pizza Kitchen - this one is tastier and less obnoxious than the Uptown location Marble Slab - on the days froyo won't fill you up, get something heavier There is a lot more stuff. These are just my highlights.

Yelp
Don't want to hit up the galleria but still want a vast variety of stores? This is your place. There is a good mix of retailers along with food options. I enjoy America's or CPK for a bite. You can stop by Barnes and Nobles for a book. I like coming by especially for my running equipment at Luke's Locker. Or a dessert at Marble Slab or Swirll. And finally, you can't forget the historic river oaks theater for indie movies or rocky horror showings! Overall, a way to spend a day OUTSIDE if Houston's weather cooperates.

Yelp
This is like if the Galleria and The Village had a lesser known baby. ...But with better parking. You've got: 310 Rosemont (relocating to West Ave soon, but offering sweet 75% off savings right now) The Gap - Srlsly crazy sales LMD Boutique Two Starbucks, CPK, a few bars and other eats Marfreless (wink) River Oaks Theatre (um, they get five stars from me.) La Mode Lingerie and Swimwear I'm here once a month searching for quick and stress-free fashion finds. They're up to a bit of construction right now, but it's nothing worth complaining about.

Yelp
Good stores, but they're far away from each other, if you ask me (and I'm not a lazy person, I just prefer my stores within a close distance from each other). Discounts are limited and most of the shops are designer branded.

Yelp
There are good things about this shopping center and bad things about this shopping center. First the good: Barnes and noble booksellers has an excellent selection of dr who DVDs. Plus their Starbucks has a good lunch. Now the bad. Parking. It's not that great. Please improve on parking!

Yelp
This shopping center is a great way to spend a weekend afternoon or evening. Feast your eyes upon the two Starbucks, one on each side of W. Gray, then shop for lingerie or kitchen goods, maybe even paint some pottery. Take in a film and then grab a drink at any of the friendly bars or restaurants. Everything is well-kept and at least reasonably classy. Bring your visiting family members before going to the Galleria or Highland Village if you need to make up for Houston's cowtown image.

Yelp
Save your money! The only 2 items I ended up purchasing at this new dice boutique (because I felt so awful for walking in and thinking it was Talbots), have very literally, fallen apart. One is a pair of flat shoes... All of the embellishments have fallen off. As well as a cute black turtle neck... Nearly neck less now. The entire seam came out. I have only had these things for 5 weeks. Yikes!
