3 Best Day Trips from Charleston, South Carolina | Condé Nast Traveler

"You might not spot The River Room right away if you're coming in off the water; the restaurant's dark wooden façade makes it look like part of the boardwalk scenery. But the decor doesn't have to speak loudly; the fresh seafood does that work for it. Order one of drinks that make up waterside dining's Holy Trinity (a marg, a dacquiri, or a piña colada) and start with the McClellanville Crab Balls; then ask for whatever's the catch of the day. There’s already something indulgent, albeit casual, about the experience of waterside dining, and when a menu complements the location so well, you really can’t go wrong." - Paul Oswell

Tonight we went to the River Room based upon my brother’s recommendation and glad we did! Started with Spicy Crawfish dip followed with house salad and my wife ordered Shrimp and Scallops while I ordered Trigger Fish! Our server Kim did a great job!

The River Room has recently been purchased by the same family that owns Rolling Local on Front Street. My Granny passed away in 2008 and every year we go on Front Street to eat for her birthday. We went today and had a great time. The food and atmosphere was perfect. I had the fried shrimp platter. My family had everything from Shrimp and Grits to Trigger Fish to Chicken Salad Sandwiches to Beef Stew.

Enjoyed another delicious meal at one of my favorite restaurants in the lovely historic South Carolina coastal town of Georgetown. Great menu with yummy appetizers, friendly wait staff & a beautiful waterfront location. Love this place!

Google
On the water dining is always a favorite of mine. Clam strips were too salty and served with a sweet and sour type sauce, recommended getting tartar sauce for it. Bread pudding was a little dry. My snapper and grits were delicious (ate it up before I got a pic, sorry) 🤭

Wanted to be served outside on such a beautiful day. Couple in front of me at the hostess stand wanted to do the same. The hostess said that it was not available. They decided to leave. I was about to do the same. They would have lost 3 customers. The hostess then said that she could get me a table with a river view inside and it would just take 5 minutes. I sat in the lobby and waited. After 15 minutes I asked what the delay was. She apologized saying she forgot about me. The river view was nice. The food was good or I would have given a bad review. Local shrimp, flounder. Hush puppies and fries were good. Large side salad. All of the portions were very generous.

Yesterday my Church group from PICC had a luncheon at the River Room . 35 of us arrived to share wonderful food and fellowship. They were ready for us, assigned us two lovely servers, Katelyn and Haley, and we quickly had beverages and food orders taken. These friendly and efficient ladies made the experience so nice and comfortable for all of us. I don’t know how your kitchen got our meals out so quickly and not one mistake! Thank you again River Room!

3 of us went to River room today. We were sat at 1:06, server took out order at 1:10. Our food came to the table at 2:10. All of food was cold. Not even luke warm. My husband ate nothing. I ate mine and our friend only at 20% of hers We then ordered the wonderful key lime pie and it was burnt. What happened. The food a few months ago was wonderful. We will not go back.

Google
Absolutely amazing. Everything was perfect . Our server Kim H. was knowledgeable, friendly, and we never had to ask for anything. The best grits I have ever had. Their play on Oysters Rock truly stepped them up another level!! You must visit here if in the area or if you have an hour or two to drive. Definitely worth it!

Yelp
Our son said his grilled cheese and French fries were fantastic, and he gives the restaurant five stars for that and the life sized pirate, and also the fish aquarium. The restaurant is nice and a great location. For me, the food was only just ok. Yes I would eat here again, but I would be interested to try someplace new now that we've been here.

Yelp
We were looking for a place to eat on our way back to Myrtle Beachk from Charleston. Also wanted seafood. This restaurant popped up and looked interesting. We were seating in just a few minutes, even though the restaurant was packed. We were out of the Mai restaurant on a closed in area. We loved it because we could see boats coming and going and people watch. Our waitress, Paula, was the best. She was very friendly and a great personality. We chose an appetizer of Mcclellenville crab cakes to share and then she brought out delicious cornbread. We shared a fried shrimp dinner that came with hush puppies, white grits, and a salad. It was all really delicious. Honestly after the crab cakes and salad we were full. Definitely recommend! We wish we would have had time to wander along the waterfront, so cute.

Yelp
Throughly enjoyed my take out tonight. The side of various bread options were especially delightful.

Yelp
So so experience, at best. Lazy Tuesday lunch in Georgetown, the place was packed. We were seated immediately near the river. Service was really slow, but cheerful. Food was good, but not WOW. Started with the Buffalo Chicken dip, that was excellent. Followed that up with a Fried Shrimp Platter for me, she had the oyster tower. Hers - too much breading, gravy made that super soggy and gross. Few oysters, lots of fried green tomatoes. My platter was good, but the shrimp over breaded and the fries were cold. Prices were fair for the portions. I would give it another try later in the day when the kitchen and staff were not so slammed.

Yelp
I ordered the seafood gumbo for a late lunch, and it was delicious!!! So full of shrimp, scallops, and sausage, and veggies too. The biscuit served on the side was yummy too.

Yelp
Awesome food and awesome service ! Would totally come here again ! Awesome friendly staff and it's very busy !

Yelp
Get the steak! The ribeye was amazing. I split a meal with friends. They got steak I had salmon with lobster cream sauce. This was a special. It was also pretty good. The waitress was very friendly. They made my friend's Tom Collin's perfectly and she's pretty particular about this drink. The prices were reasonable and it's right on the river so you can people watch while you eat. Older tables and chairs but that didn't bother us.

Yelp
Charming spot on the intercoastal in downtown Georgetown. Three of us sat down for dinner craving seafood. Researching menus online, we decided to stop in here. Not being from the South, we are always delighted with the charm and friendliness of restaurant staff south of the tea line. Our server at the River Room epitomizes this description, and truly lovely. We started off with an order of calamari. Instead of cocktail sauce, it came with a Thai chili sauce, which the tang provided a very pleasant pairing. For entrees, my son and wife both ordered the baked salmon and I ordered the blackened grouper. Sides included fries, mashed potatoes and collard greens. We had a long travel day and having a healthy piece of fish on the water was a perfect way to celebrate our arrival in South Carolina. Unfortunately, we didn't save room for dessert. ;-(

Yelp
The setting is lovely, and the service was good. Unfortunately, the food was subpar. I had the salmon with grits. I've never had broiled salmon that was crunchy. As nice as the setting was, we'll never be back.

Yelp
Wonderful location, great food, and fabulous service. River Room located right on the River Room located right on the Harbor Walk. We had a wonderful table with a nice view of the River and the Harbor walk. I enjoyed looking out and seeing people walking and some boats come by. Our food was great! We ordered the Crab Cakes and the Salmon Vegetable Bowl. It was one of the most perfectly cooked pieces of Salmon I've had in a while. It was crispy on the outside while still being moist and flakey inside. My husband enjoyed his crab cakes and it truly contained a lot of crab, not fillers. The complimentary corn bread was so good and the salads accompanying our meal were fresh. Overall, a delicious meal, with a great view and good service.

Yelp
A friend of mine and I dined here for an early dinner yesterday and both of us were very pleased with our meals. The service was very efficient and friendly. I had the Fried Seafood Combo (shrimp, flounder, and fried clam strips, plus sides). Everything on my platter was delicious! The Clam Strips were house breaded and hands down leaps and bounds superior to anything I had in any other restaurant which I have tried in the area-and believe me, I have looked! We actually chose to dine at The River, because of the clam strips. Hush Puppies were outstanding, Dinner Salad was good and the dressings excellent. Bread rolls and cornbread very good. Grilled veggies tasty. Grouper was beautifully cooked and the seasoning was subtle and tasty. We dined riverside and it was a bit cool on the enclosed patio/deck, but it was quiet and pleasant.

Yelp
The River Room was once again a staple of our visit. Our meal was solid. Everything was good, and nothing was great. My husband had the flounder po'boy and I had the shrimp. Both were good. His fries good, my sweet potato fries were good. All was solid and nothing was great.

Yelp
Lunch today at the River Room. We go twice a year when in town, We ordered 2 glasses of wine and it took 15 minutes to arrive. Then ordered food and it took 25 minutes to arrive. Ordered salmon salad and shrimp pasta. The salmon was over cooked and dried out. Ordered 2 more drinks but had to cancel because we could wait no longer after another 15 minutes. We had booked a sight seeing tour. The place was full of locals drinking ice tea. It was bike week which added more patrons. Server was very nice but what the heck is going on? Please hire more people, be prepared and pay staff better or you will be closing soon.

Yelp
A typical nice river front place with a casual atmosphere and very good service. My wife has a Santa Fe salad which was huge and had plenty of perfectly cooked chicken on as well as the other veggies. I had a fried flounder sandwich which was a good sized piece of fish but on a dry lifeless bun without any thing else to jazz it up. No mayo, no pickle or pickle sauce or lettuce to make it a true sandwich. I got some cocktail sauce and just ate it with a fork. Good by itself but not what it should have been. It's a small menu with other interesting things on it so would go back. A friendly place and worth dropping in.

Sharon M.

Yelp
Not nice to their employees! Wait staff is vital to a restaurant and some of the employees have left after many years there. New owners need to upgrade their employees.

Yelp
We all really enjoyed the food and location, great view as well and friendly staff. Blah blah blah.

Yelp
Stopped through Georgetown on our drive from Durham to Charleston and are so very happy we did! They have my husband's favorite repair made in Wisconsin called crackers which is a really great starting point in addition to that the stunning Harborview during sunset just added to an a already gorgeous setting. We had the crab cakes to start. I got the sautéed shrimp, mushroom and scallops with grits and vegetables as my side.. delicious! So fresh & yummy that my hubs (who got the shrimp and grits) slid over to mine because he liked it more. Incredibly friendly service and a memorable meal. Even the breath star refresh warm and delicious. The dressings on the salad (that comes with your entrées) are all homemade.... we are big fans of ranch dressing and theirs definitely delivered. Definitely recommend this special place on the harbor.

Jennie S.

Yelp
Wish I could speak to the quality/taste of the food but after waiting 2 HOURS, we gave up on our order and left. Do not sit at the bar if you actually want to get fed.

John P.

Yelp
I love the new additions to the menu. Sitting at waterfront enjoying the views and the amazing sunset on this evening was matched by the solid service and the wonderful food. We love their bread, really like the she crab soup and their side salad with either a delicious homemade balsamic vinaigrette or thousand island.

Yelp
Food was very good! It was a busy Friday of the week of the 4th and the service was very good!! We had a wonderful time!! Christine Crowder Aiken SC

Yelp
Good food and relaxing setting on the waterfront. The crab cakes are on point as well as sauteed shrimp and scallops. Sauteed vegetables, not so much. Overcooked and mushy. Overall I'd eat there again gladly.

Yelp
We ate their last night, Friday Dec 22. The 801 burger was pretty bad. Dry and I could hardly cut it with a fork. French fries were heat lamp - room temperature in which they quickly turned cold & hard. Service: I thought I would make the best of it and asked for mayo and lots of catsup. I was brought one mayo packet (Like McDonalds), which I hate trying to open, I kind of thought this was a upscale restaurant. Then a tiny cup of catsup (like Chic-fil-e). At which I gave up eating as it was all....not good. The ice tea tasted bad also.

Yelp
We have always loved River Room. We hadn't been there in a few years ( we are from Missouri). We went last night and were so excited to have Sautéed Pound Cake. It was terrible. It was a fat piece of cake.... Not a slice of pound cake.....nothing like it used to be. We probably won't go back there.....soooooo disappointing

Yelp
We went to River Room for my birthday dinner. We were seated in the area right by the river front. Our server was so sweet and the food was great!! The portions were large and tasty. With wonderful food, great company and a beautiful view it was a great first birthday I celebrated in South Carolina

Yelp
We had a very tasty and nice meal here. Beautiful water views of the river/bay. We got the crab balls to start which I highly recommend. Essentially 4 crab cakes in ball form. I got the herb crusted grouper with mashed potatoes and collards. Most if not all entrees come with a salad. I really really like their collards. Wife got the ahi tuna and it came out looking like a steak. Big portion and she loved it. Our server, Amy, was excellent.

Yelp
Hour to get food, excuses from manager, Not returning. Had to ask for a comp, only 10 percent. Not returning.

Christi N.

Yelp
The service was great! The food was delicious. Everyone loved what they ordered. We also really loved their cornbread! The ambiance was also nice.
google avatar

Cathleen C.

Yelp
A great place looking out at a marina on the Sampit River. I had and recommend the crab cakes. My friend had the grouper; the center was great but the edges were dry and chewy. Now, the cornbread was amazing! Personally, I was put off with being served on plastic plates. The silverware was a nice weight, the napkins were cloth and the dishes were plastic?

Megan M.

Yelp
This is a lovely rustic themed restaurant in downtown Georgetown. The restaurant doesn't take reservations, so we walked in and were seated straight away on a Saturday night for an early dinner. Our server was friendly and personable. Food was reasonably priced, tasty and given in large portions.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious place, we were placing by from mrytle beach to charleston. It was a bit busy but wait time wasnt bad. Me and my parter just took a little stroll on docks. I ordered sante fe chicken- it was super flavorful. it came with side of broiled vegetables but they were seasoned to perfection. 100% recommend trying it if you are looking for healthier option; My partner order altantic salmon- from few bites i took he loved it too and it also came with side of broiled vegetables. Biscuits were fresh made. Loved this place.

Robin H.

Yelp
We ate lunch there last Saturday, June 22. The restaurant has a pleasant, casual atmosphere with a nice riverfront view. Our server was friendly and attentive; however, the rest of our experience was disappointing. We waited around an hour for our food even though it was not particularly crowded, and we had ordered what we thought would be simple-prep meals. When our food arrived, it was nothing special, not as good as an average Saturday lunch at home... and it had taken much longer to fix and of course had not been inexpensive. We had been hoping to enjoy delicious fresh seafood during our day trip to Georgetown, but in the end we both wished we'd eaten somewhere else.

Beth M.

Yelp
Good food at reasonable price. The servers are always so nice. Love the view. Great place to go a sunset.

Yelp
It's a Georgetown classic all indoor seating. Very nice restaurant great food clean atmosphere

Yelp
My husband and I had dinner at this establishment 11/1/24. First the service was extremely slow; waited at least 1/2 hr for appetizer's and another 1/2 hr for entree's. Had to ask the server what specials were, where she volunteered this info to other customers around us. Server avoid eye contact with us and had to be called over multiple times for various service; but she checked up on others around us. The steak was tough, baked potato and sweet potato fries were cold. Crab balls were tasty, but everything else was just ok (grouper. bang bang shrimp). Ordered a margarita, after a couple sips, asked the server to switch it out for a glass of wine because I did not like the drink. When we got our receipt, not only were both drinks still on the bill, but also two entrees over $50 was erroneously on the bill. When I challenged why both drinks were on the bill, she then says you are not allowed to switch out a drink. That would have not been a big deal if she had communicated that when I originally requested to switch out the drink, giving me a choice up front. Asked for manager that comes over loud and defensive. The bill was ultimately corrected for the additional entrees but the drink was not credited. When I asked a to go cup for the added drink (since forced to pay for it), the server placed the cup turned sideways on the table. I don't typically write reviews, but this was one of the worst customer service experience we've ever had and the food wasn't that great either.
google avatar

Jessica W.

Yelp
Staff very friendly, great water views. The daily specials are great! The blueberry cornbread a must try. The food never disappoints.

Nestor N.

Yelp
Great seafood selection excellently prepared. Good service. Good ambiance. Reasonably priced.

Yelp
My hometown go to for fresh seafood. You don't have to drive to the beach or Murrells Inlet for great seafood. The River Room on Front Street has good food, a nice river/ Harborwalk view, and friendly service. The prices are less too. I have been eating here for 34 years and have never been disappointed. My favorite is the seafood platter with flounder, shrimp, scallops, oysters, stuffed crab, and hush puppies.(such a larger portion my husband and I split it) . The strawberry vinaigrette salad dressing was a wonderful summer dressing for my salad. My dinner guests enjoyed the grilled grouper, and crab cakes. My favorite side is always the southern grits. For dessert the special was strawberry ice cream pie. Heavenly!! After dinner walk off those extra calories on Georgetown's Beautiful River Walk or sit in the park and "people watch". Both outside The River Room door.

Brian H.

Yelp
The food was great. Service was great. The mahi mahi was a little over cooked, but flavor was amazing! Highly recommend!

Manfood A.

Yelp
After we were seated and orders were taken, we had warm rolls and cornbread, which were good. Our appetizers arrived quickly and while the black eyed pea cakes were flavourful, the fried calamari was fried for way too long and dried out. After each having a small salad which were fresh and the right sized portion. We were served our entrees. The blackened ribeye was very salty and slightly overcooked. The sirloin was slightly undercooked. The grouper and tuna however were both cooked perfectly and seasoned just right. We did not order dessert. Service was friendly and prompt. The ambiance and views were pleasant as well. I recommend a visit. Just stick to the really good seafood.

Don T.

Yelp
My most favorite bar in all of Georgetown food staff atmosphere and the regulars are some of the best

William M.

Yelp
We stopped by here for a drink before we went to Murrells Inlet for supper. My wife decided since she had no lunch and supper was a couple of hours away, she would get an appetizer to hold her over. She ordered a bowl of she crab soup. Fortunately, I got to taste it. It was amazing. The soup was very tasty and had a huge pile of crab in the middle of it. We have eaten there before and very much enjoyed it. The waitress was very efficient and friendly. I liked the fact they processed my credit card right at the table. The ambiance was nice. Since we were there mid afternoon it was quiet and nice, not too crowded. We have decided we will definitely return to this place and not ride all the way to Murrells Inlet for dinner as we did that day.

Yelp
Came here for the first time with my hubby for lunch and dinner this past weekend. The restaurant was clean and the servers extra friendly. Food and drinks were on point. Since I have a shellfish allergy I have a hard time finding good food at the waterfront towns. We ordered grilled chicken and veggies for lunch and stuffed chicken breast for dinner. Both were seasoned perfectly and on point. The bread basket was hot and yummy. Definitely will return. Yum and great air conditioned views of the waterfront.
google avatar

Melanee B.

Yelp
Our foodie experience at River Room was probably or favorite of the whole trip. The drinks they served were strong and delicious. We ordered the fresh chips and blue cheese, sounds super basic but we were delivered a mountain and devoured every single bite. The side salads they served were fresh and the blue cheese dressing is homemade and chunky...YUM! I ordered the Baked Salmon. It had a Parmesan horseradish soufflé on top. It was to die for. Loved every bite of this meal. I wished we skipped out on going to Root the next night and came back here instead.
google avatar

Christy P.

Yelp
Visited the River Room Labor Day weekend. The food was just ok but the service was outstanding! We traveled to Georgetown by boat and took an Uber to the restaurant. After dinner we had difficulty getting an Uber back to the hotel and the waitress arranged for an employee to drive us back to the hotel. We were all pleasantly surprised. Would return again.
google avatar

Karen L.

Yelp
We were starving when we got there and we were looking forward to some fresh seafood. Hot rolls and fresh cornbread were delivered to the table and both were very good. Two of us ordered the sautéed shrimp and scallops. Big mistake. Our food arrived at the table warm, but not hot, and scallops had no flavor and the shrimp were very tough and chewy. How a restaurant specializing in seafood can't cook shrimp is baffling. I'd heard good things about River Room, but we won't go back.

Donna A.

Yelp
Very nice lunch on the river The good was great as was the service. Loved the she-crab soup.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and very good food at a good price, sets River Room apart. Jo (my wife) and I were traveling home from a beach trip with my daughter and grandchildren. We decided to take the coastal route as it was shorter miles (due to the gas shortage...) and much more scenic. I yelped ahead of us to pick a place for lunch and remembered that Georgetown was a historic town that might be a nice place as well to take a break. After running through quite a few restaurants, River Run seemed to fit the bill with good food and a waterfront view! Located on the historic waterfront River Room's dining room has a commanding view of the water and all sorts of boats from large fishing charter to sailing boats docked all along the docks. We were seated in a room a tier above the bottom level tables in an area that had a rustic wooden nautical finished with a large aquarium and and antique pictures and fixtures. After a quick look at the menu, Jo went for the seafood platter and I opened for the the shrimp creole with rice lunch special. I added the seafood gumbo as It seemed worth a try. Our server kept up with our beverages and lemon needs while we waited for our meals. I received my gumbo a and Jo her house salad with a herb vinaigrette. My gumbo had nice chunks of chicken and Anjou sausage. The latter having a nice spice and plentiful pieces of adding to the enjoyment I had with this soup. My creole followed shortly afterwards and was good with at least a half a dozen nice sized fresh shrimp and rice in a tomato and pepper sauce! Jo's seafood platter was to impress with four fried scallops, shrimp, oysters and fried fried flounder filet with a deviled crab. The latter was good but not your Maryland variety if you know what I mean... We passed on dessert as we were well satisfied with our meal. Food and Beverage 4 - Well prepared food and very tasty and fresh . Portion was good in all cases! Service 4 Server was helpful and kept up with our needs. Atmosphere 5 Really nice comfortable nautical atmosphere, with a great view of waterfront! Price 4.5 For an nice to up scale restaurant the value is here and worth a visit! OA 4.5 Good place to go to and enjoy your visit to Georgetown. We plan to come back and eat here!

Yelp
We have enjoyed dinner at the River Room several times and yesterday we had lunch for the first time. While they have great steaks (so I have been told) we always order seafood. For lunch I had the Shrimp and Oyster Po Boy with fries. There were a ton of plump fried oysters and shrimp with lettuce and tomato on a toasted bun. As with each dinner I've had here, the lunch was excellent. I really like the setting of the River Room on the River, of course. The ambiance inside is nautical and very comfortable. Get a table near a window if you can.

Tom M.

Yelp
Relaxed, great wait staff, best she crab soup I've had in the area. Wife had oyster/fried green tomatoes stack. I had shrimp and grits. New Orleans style bread pudding for dessert. Great lunch.
