While taking Metrolink down to San Juan Capistrano, my niece and I decided to check Zoomars out prior to heading into the city. It's a bit hidden and there is some construction in the area, so follow the signs down the path and you'll end up at the right place. If you see a playground and smell something reminiscent of a farm setting , you are heading in the right direction.
Zoomars is located in old town San Juan, adjacent to the railroad tracks. You'll see a coffee shop that resembles a small home. Take the pathway next to it to get to the petting zoo. There is a parking structure just across from the zoo as well as public parking behind the restaurants on the other side of the tracks.
When you arrive, you'll pay the admission fee of $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and children, and the military discount it $10 but you must present your ID. You can purchase a feed basket for an additional fee of $6. This will
include various vegetables but read the signs before feeding the animals as many are on strict diets.
This is a small petting zoo with a lot to offer. You'll find typical animals such as goats, pigs, and chickens. You can go into the goat/sheep pen but you cannot take food inside. Odd, but I'm sure that there's a reason for this. The chickens walk around freely so watch where you step, because they're all over the property, The cutest cow has quite a small pen but he's there for you to hug and pose for pictures with.
The guinea pig enclosure is really cute. They are in a large pen, running around all over the place. People can sit on the adjoining seats that surround the perimeter of the enclosure. You are not allowed to hold the guinea pigs anymore. They will place them next to you on the bench for you to feed and pet. Apparently, you used to be able to hold them, but the rules have changed.
I did not explore much to the other side of the property. It was a decent size with a playground for little ones to enjoy themselves. There are other activities for kids to do such as take a small train ride around the property, go for a tractor ride, have fun with an excavator, and of course, let's not forget the farm favorite of going for a ride on a pony. You can also pan for various items like the miners did in the early days of the California Gold Rush.
Overall, I really enjoyed my visit to
Zoomars. I really wish that we could
still hold the guinea pigs. I'm sure that this is to ensure the safety of the fuzzy little guys, but it would still be nice if adults could handle them for the kids.
Other than that, I can say that I really liked this place. We will stop by Zoomars again, when we are back in the area for a day visit.
