We went at a quiet time, Tuesday at noon. The carrot curry soup was excellent, but the scallions took away from the flavor complexity. The prosciutto mozzarella pistachio dish was very good, especially the freeze dried sage pieces. Lastly, the burger was excellent, juicy, and greasy with crisp vegetables in the best way, served with homemade ketchup. My companion and I were going to share everything, and the kitchen plated all our dishes separately without us even having to request that. It was very considerate. The interior is clean, and I liked that customers have to walk past the entire kitchen to get to the bathroom. They have nothing to hide, and the focus really seems to be on the flavors here. My one complaint would be that my limeade had zero sweetener in it, so it was just lime water, which isn't really what I was expecting to consume. Anyway thanks !

While a bit noisy due to it being a crowded small place, the atmosphere was generally nice and welcoming. Well lit and styled nicely. Service was really great. Our servers were nice and attentive. Unfortunately we were pretty disappointed with the food. The homemade tortilla chips were WAY too salty, as were both the burger and the fries. We also ordered the swordfish which is generally a pretty mild fish so I don’t know what was causing the funky flavor — maybe the wood grill? We didn’t care for it. In general, we were disappointed because the atmosphere and service were both good, but the food we ordered was not.

Service and place is great. But food could be better. Ordered a burger with fries on the side and ramen. Fries is so salty. Burger is fine. Ramen’s broth is salty, noodles is undercooked and chashu/pork is overcooked or burnt. Not sure how I feel about what I ate

A lovely restaurant with great food and friendly staff! We enjoyed eating lunch and hope to be back soon for dinner! If you are hungry I recommend the burgers. While the other dishes are delicious the portions are rather small.

I saw a post on Facebook about RT opening for breakfast. I was so excited, but waited many weeks giving time to work out the kinks that most restaurants have. I called ahead to find out about housemade syrups for their lattes and was told they didn't offer any. Ok, no problem. I still wanted to try it out. Upon arriving I stood in an empty space with only one group seated. An employee saw me, but he turned back around to make an espresso drink. I waited for 7 minutes without being welcomed. Come to find out the employee was too busy to address me to make his own perfected drink. After tasting it several times, he greeted me and showed me a table. I ordered the blueberry pancakes. About 5 minutes later I was told they were out of blueberries. I changed my order to eggs, bacon and toast. When the food came out, the toast was dry (no butter). I asked for butter and jelly. They don't offer jelly only butter. I asked if they had honey; he went to check. He and another employee looked behind the bar going through bottles of unmarked liquids and seemed puzzled. Server came back with what appeared to be a honey (simple syrup??). It was so watery it made my toast soggy. The bacon and eggs were perfect. Suggestions: go to a local market and get local jelly/jam, local honey. Make or buy flavored syrups for lattes. I'll try again this summer.

I don’t like giving bad reviews on the internet. But this place was so horrible that I had to complain somewhere. Sorry that I didn’t take pictures. First off, the tables were crowded next to each other with barely any room between them. Once we got sat down, my mom noticed the table cloth had guacamole on it, which she is allergic to. Then, I saw on the table a pepper shaker and a tiny bowl with a little bit of salt in it. Sorry restaurant, could you not afford a second shaker for my salt? Also, there wasn’t even a spoon in the bowl, so I have to reach into the salt where other people have put their hands in it. Very unhygienic. Then, I tried to order the French toast, but they didn’t have it, so instead I got pancakes with a side of bacon. I asked for the bacon to be soft and not crispy. Remember that. Also, my mom got a salad. And they were both $16. 16 dollars for a salad? That’s crazy. When we finally got our food, I was shocked. First off, my soft bacon I ordered turned out to be the crispiest bacon I’ve ever seen. The next thing I noticed was that the strawberries that I thought were going to be on top of the pancakes were cooked inside of the pancakes. Let me tell you, I’ve never had a bad pancake ever in my life. Until today. It tasted absolutely awful. Why not put the strawberries on top? Why? And my mom’s salad wasn’t any better. Her salad was apparently way too salty, it had a giant pepper in it, and the miso dressing wasn’t good at all. How do you mess up a salad? It’s literally just vegetables! At the end of the day, the server wasn’t nice, the food was awful and expensive, and the ambience wasn’t good.

i dont typically write reviews unless i had a terrible experience or an amazing one. fortunately - this experience was amazing! the staff was extremely friendly. my waitress answered all of my questions and one of the workers there gave me the sweetest compliment. its clear they go out of their way to make you comfortable/feel welcome, even when they are busy/overwhelmed; on that note, they do get busy, especially around dinner time, so be prepared to have a little wait for your food (make a reservation beforehand as well). i also got a side Caesar salad which was $15-16, was a little pricey for the size/quality, but besides that, my overall experience was great (: thank u to the amazing staff!

Delicious food and artisanal drinks. Great staff. Gluten free options. Our favorite restaurant in this area and We are from over an hour away. Staff (Noah) was our waitress both times we visited and she was great at helping us make our food and drink selections! We had the swordfish and cod with lobster sauce over mashed potatoes…both were amazing!

Yelp
"If I had wings and I could fly, I know where I would go. But right now I'll just sit here so contentedly And watch the river flow" (Bob Dylan) If you've never been to Chester, CT but are reasonably close to visit, you really need to fire up your GPS and make a trip to this charming little town. You'll find a vibrant Main Street with clothing and jewelry shops, a brewery, and restaurants. A whole lot of restaurants. The town has a very chill Bohemian vibe that is overflowing with hustle and bustle during the warm weather months. Four of us had lunch reservations yesterday. It was my first visit to River Tavern and I really loved it a lot. All of the lunch menu entrees are under $24, and quite a few are under $20. To start things off, a former co-worker and I split an $18 order of half a dozen Mystic Oysters with lemon and cocktail sauce. They were very good! Our table went in four different directions for lunch - a $22 Fish Sandwich, a $20 Burger, a $24 Eggplant Parmigiana, and a $24 Fish Soup. The Fish Soup was mine and it was one of the best dishes I had all year. It was a heaping bowl with chunks of monkfish and halibut, with a few big scallops, shrimp, clams, mussels, fennel, peppers, onion, saffron, lemon, and fresh herbs. It was excellent. Our server Tara, and the young guy that also pitched in at our table, were both friendly, coureous, efficient and professional. The restaurant is beautiful. There is a bar and dining room up front and a second dining room in the back that has an open space where you can peer into the kitchen. PRO TIP You'll get a full access view of the kitchen if you need to visit the restroom because the circuitous path to the restroom will take you right through the kitchen! Yes, you read that correctly. Our meal for four included the oysters, a wine, a beer, two gin and tonics, and four entrees, and that ran $152 after tax and before tip.

Yelp
It was a really nice. That matzo ball soup. The people were, and the fish Didn't taste too good.

John O.

Yelp
Generally we only have good things to say about River Tavern but not tonight The food was OK but the service was just plain bad. We waited and waited and waited for our dinner which was a pasta dish and a burger. I do not like giving bad reviews but tonight they deserve it.

Yelp
River Tavern serves up some of the best food in Chester. Despite having so many good options for dinner in Chester, River Tavern always has something new and exciting to try on their menu, making them the perfect option. The cocktails are spot on. We tried an autumnal drink special that had apple cider and was perfection in a glass! We also got the jungle bird cocktail with rum and their cosmopolitan which was perfection. For apps we started with the burrata special and the chickpea fried shrimp- both were lovely and fresh. For my main I had the fried chicken with delicious barbecue sauce and coleslaw and fries. Overall, the service was lovely and inside is cozy and warm. Perfect for a date night or just a fun night out!

Dana Q.

Yelp
Consistently good, whether it be for lunch or dinner. The speciality cocktails are great and the seasonal menu is unique and well thought out.

Angela A.

Yelp
River Tavern is a small restaurant with an interesting menu. They had a lot of different Asian inspired menu options. I ended up getting the bao buns. They were delicious but I do wish the bao bun itself was warm. They were kind enough to offer coffee on the house which was very sweet. The staff were delightful, kind and attentive. I would go back again to try more of their menu options which was said to change frequently.

Sun B.

Yelp
Nice place, very loud, had a hard time having a conversation because of it, food was good. Service could have been better. Over all, place just for more of the drinks and bar.

Claire B.

Yelp
The food was wonderful. The server was very attentive and the setting (on the river) was truly lovely. From what I could see, everyone else there was saying similar things. I will note this as a favorite for the next wedding at which I officiate! (Would also be a great setting for a wedding, with the tent by the river)

Susan V.

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants in the charming town of Chester. Menu changes multiple times a year to keep seasonal ingredients. The service is always on par, friendly and attentive. The shrimp and pasta dishes are typically my favorite. When they have the guacamole, I usually get it because it's always wonderful. My favorite drink here is their spicy margarita with salt. Superb. Tiny little place... but cozy. This place is no secret-so you might want to make a reservation ahead of time.

Patsy L.

Yelp
Always good. A go to place for sure fire dinner and drinks. Their classic margaritas are just that and the food is consistently good

Lindsey F.

Yelp
It's a Chester classic, lucky if you're local but also worth a drive. The ambiance is beautiful (yes, those are original works by Sol LeWitt!) In a handful of visits over a few years (solo/with a date/with friends) I've liked everything ordered. Nice place just for a glass of wine or cocktail, too. I'd describe the service as friendly with a dash of aloofness. Last time I dined there, we were bounced between a couple servers, with wait times suffering and a few things lost in translation.

Rebecca D.

Yelp
The food and the service was great! I didn't take picture of what we had for dinner but I wish i did. I had a great fish dish, it was fresh, tasteful and filling. The pork belly tacos were mouth watering and the drinks were delish. I will definitely be back!

Kathleen L.

Yelp
Honestly it used to be our favorite spot to dine. But past few times it has been very disappointing. I have found that with other people have had same experience. Food just up to par not outstanding like it used to be. Not accommodating by any means . We had a guest dine with us recovering from stomach cancer and asked to have her shrimp dish served a way she could tolerate it and they flatly refused. My husbands lamb dinner he couldn't eat half of it because the meat was so tough. They just apologized. My steak was brought to the table as if it were cooked "sous vide" no grill marks on it! Awful! Cocktails although are good it takes forever to prepare measuring precisely and charging outrageous prices! Hopefully someday it will return to the way it used to be!!

Joe B.

Yelp
This restaurant was recommended by a local antique dealer in Ivoryton, so we drove over for lunch on Sunday during Labor Day weekend. The place was crowded, and we did not have a reservation, so we elected to skip the wait and dine outside. Their lunch menu is fairly small, but eclectic and interesting. Service was friendly and the kitchen was pretty fast, even with the crowd. What I liked best was their attention to small details, like fresh, ripe garden-grown tomatoes and clipped herbs on my fried fish sandwich. The chickpea batter was fluffy and crispy. The bread was good too. The fries were perfectly cooked and seasoned. You could tell that the kitchen knows what they're doing here. It's on my list for a return visit.

Yelp
Wasn't bad but not great. We usually love eating here for the food, the atmosphere and the wait staff. Today we did not fully enjoy the food and the staff. High point was the swordfish. Not the biggest portion but delicious and served with great black beans and other niceties. The crispy tofu curry wasn't much of either...not bad to eat but the menu was promoted it as crispy and the waiter promised that the flavors would be bold with some heat, not. Nice potential but it needed the full attention of someone in the kitchen instead of just phoning in another tofu with nice veggies bowl. As an aside, it didn't come with bread or a grain so it wasn't a complete protein and when the waiter was asked for some bread she said they used to have it but not anymore. Also, for a nice restaurant that serves lunch and dinner it is hard to understand the lack of a non-alcohol beer option these days - not very apologetic either..."so you'll just have water then?". This stuff is easy to fix but we will ask a few questions when making the next reservation..

Yelp
River Tavern is a gem. When we were at Yankee Cider Co., we met some awesome locals and they said this was definitely the place to have dinner. We can't thank them enough. We walked in at 4 PM, without a reservation, and somehow managed to get an awesome table by the front window. Amazing. We started with Chinese Style Pork Buns- grilled pork belly, hoisin sauce, pickles, sesame seeds and cilantro. Wow. Just wow. Loved it. Also tried the Confit and Grilled Octopus- saffron aioli, fingerling potatoes, tomatoes, olives and charred peppers. Another flavorful knockout. I love octopus! We both also had the Starburst to drink. It was a refreshing mix of crop lemon vodka, fresh lime juice and elderflower liqueur. Tart and delicious. Dinner time arrived and we order the Pan Roasted Sea Bass and the Grilled NY Strip. The Sea Bass had a Thai red curry sauce, roasted radish and a salad of shaved crispy vegetables. peanuts and a chili lime sauce. Such a nice zip. My friend had the Strip with sauteed fingerling potatoes, shishito peppers, onions tomatoes, grilled radicchio and gorgonzola crema. Cooked to perfection. I scored a bite or two. Yay! This town is so cute. The food, drinks and scenery...all worth a visit. We even saw a double rainbow in the sky during our meal. Does it get any better? Can't wait to return.

Yelp
Great Food. Lovely small downtown. Very good service. Our waitress answered many questions and checked on us frequently. The only small issue was the trip to bathroom was down a small hallway through the kitchen area. We went for lunch. I had the Fish Soup which was Phenomenal! It was less of a soup and more of a celebration of the fresh seafood with the most flavorful herb infused broth at the bottom. It was a 10. Nice wine selection. My wife enjoyed a fresh lime aid drink had the Fish Sandwich which she enjoyed. While we loved our meals, we both noticed the kitchen was sending out a lot of Burgers , which looked to be amazing. Next time we will definitely try a burger. Really looking forward to visiting Chester and this nice place again.

Susan S.

Yelp
Slow service yesterday for lunch combined with a burnt bun (seriously burnt) and dry fried fish sandwich made for a disappointing lunch. The mushroom soup was delicious and the almond cake good too. But those two items did not carry the meal. I would think there is someone in the kitchen checking quality -- and should have never let the burnt sandwich out of the kitchen. Apparently not. Gotta up your lunch game River Tavern, before I come back.

Keith M.

Yelp
The entree was fine. A little pricey for what it was. Drinks were overpriced. But the service was what really irked me. Stupid comments from our waitress on multiple occasions. She seemed irritated that we weren't on her timeline. She would serve 4 of 6 drinks and then not bring the others for over 10 minutes. Same went for the apps. Never again.

John L.

Yelp
River Tavern is my go to lunch place - I say lunch because I have not had dinner there, but given the lack of quality lunch places that are not just sandwich places (not that there is anything wrong with that!) River Tavern is an Oasis of Culinary Deliciousness Here is just a sampling of a few lunches that where out of this world. Starters warm olives and spicy thai shrimp salad - mango, peanut sause, scallions and mango-chili-lime dressing. These two dishes warmed up a gloomy rainy day. 3-4 different olives (yes I have had olive apps that were bad!) served with warm oil with thinly sliced garlic just perfect. Spicy Shrimp salad was garden fresh, nice kick, a variety of subtle flavors and perfectly cooked shrimp. Main attraction was one of the best beef burgers i have had - smoked bacon, bel paese (cheese) spicy aioli - i kid you not the first two bite produced "juice pops" only a burger cooked to perfection can do. The second dish was expertly charred octopus with saffron aioli, potatoes, olives, tomato, fennel and parsley. Light, subtle flavors and the aioli tied the dish together. OK my first dessert at the River Tavern was the Lemon Posset - truth!? the fresh (and I mean homeade fresh) whipped cream so was good I thought it was the dessert! The lemon was unlike anything I have had before - just amazing - and clocks in as top 10 desert in my life. To keep the next lunch short, just look at the pictures - classic caeser tasted freshly tableside perpared (make sure to mix the salad up) and the asian salad w/green apple, cashews, scallions and miso-ginger dressing, both fanastic. The mains were a homemade pasta special with crisp but soft garlic, pancetta, mushrooms and parmesan in a white sauce. The last was just an expert explosive combination of flavors in the Chinese fried rice, shrimp, pork, egg, vegs, chili, cashews, ginger and sesame, filling (takehome) and perfect. Desert was the Blueberry Buckle with homade Whipped Cream. Here is a desert NOT overloaded with surgar! It is moist dense and naturally subtle blurberry flavors. Mixed drinks were on point and balanced.

Yelp
Not that you can go wrong by choosing to spend an evening on a sidewalk table at *any* restaurant in Chester, but I am confident we made the right choice at River Tavern on Friday night. We had a 6pm reservation and walked in a few minutes early to a mostly-empty restaurant. We were quickly attended to by Sara (Sarah?) who, it turns out, goes to the same pediatrician as my best friend and dinner date! Small towns are the best. We started with drinks (I went with the Gold Rush) and cheers-ed to getting out of the house. We decided to split the figs, which came on a bed of lettuce so it felt somewhat healthy even if they were wrapped in meat. My *only* complaint - and this doesn't even really rate on the scale - is that the salad came with 3 figs and we got 3 pieces of bread, when there were 2 of us. 2 or 4. Not 3. You can't split it easily. Obviously this didn't really have any impact on our night out, but it's just a general pet peeve of mine. Then came the burger. We knew we'd want dessert and we knew we had a few more Chester spots to hit, so we split the burger. Color me surprised when they came out with the burger pre-split and plated separately for us. This tiny touch made a big splash for sure. It's so easy for a restaurant to do this rather than bringing out an empty plate and making the patrons split the food, but this is one of the first times in memory that it's been done ahead of time. So easy to do with a big result -- an easy, thoughtful move. Anyway. The burger was juicy and delicious and totally hit the spot. On a menu with more sophisticated items, hidden at the bottom of the list, it was only $16 and was done perfectly. For our second round of drinks, we both decided the Gold Rush was a winner. Along with our drinks, we had pre-ordered the Date Pudding to split. We mostly at the whipped cream and nibbled at the edges since my friend said I had to bring it home and eat it for breakfast. Sara(h?) gave us a few more leftover tips for the pudding, too. There were, happily, more patrons outside and in when we were getting ready to leave. With all of that -- two drinks each, an appetizer, entree, and dessert -- we only paid about $50 each plus tip. I feel like the food and experience was worth much more. I'm hoping to come back here during my next visit to Connecticut so I can try a seafood choice, too.

Sarah S.

Yelp
Love this restaurant. I go there every time I am in CT. Don't miss. The drinks are great. The bread pudding dessert is excellent.

Dean C.

Yelp
Put the River Tavern on your list as a must try. The location is wonderful, the service was fantastic and the food was creative and delicious! The menu changes slightly making it hard not to want to go often. The town of Chester is very nice so if you go, make a reservation for 5ish and get their around 3pm and wander the shops in Chester before dinner.

Ron V.

Yelp
Great tasting food. Very attentive but not hovering service. And the drink menu is top notch. Had the "House of the Dragon" and it was awesome.

Larry S.

Yelp
Went back, enjoyed a great brunch and, of course, the date bread pudding. It is still on my favorite list for special occasions.

Sean F.

Yelp
We recently had a very poor experience at River Tavern. A completely disengaged and rude server, over an hour to receive entrees while tables who sat after us were already eating dessert. The food here used to be excellent, but now it just feels mediocre and overpriced. I really hope they can hire some better staff, go back to their farm roots and turn it around.

Glora G.

Yelp
Terrific food and drinks. HUGE burger. Creat chillaqueles (sp?) Good service. Lunch available .

Kiki C.

Yelp
We had dinner at River Tavern tonight, the food was amazing, the service was impeccable, ambience was very nice. The guacamole was creamy and delicious as an app. I had the New York strip and it was so good, perfectly cooked. Our cocktails pre dinner were so tasty. Sarah our server was attentive and spot on.

Don M.

Yelp
Start with dessert- the date pudding is worth both the calories and the wait! Dinner was swordfish and the house made spaghetti with pork ragu- both dishes were so good we polished them off pretty quickly. The drink selection was very nice, a well-made cosmo and a jalapeño margarita started us off, followed by another of each...then we lost track. When you go to River Tavern begin with the end in mind- the date pudding!

Dennis U.

Yelp
It's hard to believe that my last review of River Tavern was over 10 years ago. The interior hasn't changed. Still kind of classy casual. The service is the same professional level. The menu changes daily but a number of standards either remain or show up from time to time. While it's been over 10years since the last review, I've been back numerous times and if the food quality stays the same, I'll be back many more. The appetizer list is interesting and long and varied enough to act as a tapas menu. We ordered a guacamole for the table to start. Super! Made to order, fresh and chunky. I ordered two appetizers for lunch, the pork buns and the chicken wings. The pork buns are a perfect rendition of David Chang's pork buns at Momofuko, steamed Chinese buns wrapped around crispy pork belly, dressed with a bit of hoisin. Wow. Nice to know that I don't have to drive to NYC or DC for these. The wings were not crispy but moist and delicious especially with the blue cheese creama they were topped with. I think that I destroyed one of the cloth napkins with my deliciously coated but grubby fingers. MK had the Brussels sprouts which were seared and dressed lightly with a balsamic vinaigrette. She's still raving about them hours later. One slight glitch, one of our group ordered a burger, also an excellent choice, but the fries were cold and a bit flaccid. No problem, we mentioned it to our server who returned in a few minutes with a big bowl of fries, fresh out of the frier. He even offered to take back the originals and crisp them up...we declined. We finished things off with the date pudding. Note, this has to be ordered at the beginning of the meal and is a regular offering that is not to be missed. There is a nice but limited offering of wines by the glass, but judging from past experience, a more extensive list of wines by the bottle is available. I had a Cahors and a friend had a Vouvray, not selections one finds everywhere. River Tavern is about a 45 minute drive for me. Considering what's available at the end of the ride it's no difficult trip. I have and will return.

Valentina D.

Yelp
This blew my mind so first I got guacamole and muscles then I got with my dad butter pasta and my dad got scallop pasta and then for dessert we got date pudding and omg it was the best thing I had ever tasted definitely come here.

Julia L.

Yelp
Very disappointed. We went a few months ago the food was great! came back and the pasta dish I previously ordered had changed and become spicy with mint leaves mixed into the tomato sauce? Very odd flavor/combination. Also not accommodating to dietary restrictions. Will not add a protein to a salad. The chilaquiles on the menu was good.

Angelique C.

Yelp
I continue to frequent River Tavern, in large part bc I love the staff! The food is good but not fabulous, with a few exceptions: Guacamole is the best, burgers are typically delicious, many of the special fish dishes and the pork buns are also very good, as are several of the cocktails. I especially like Tricia's Pink and their Marguerita. Wines are ok, but nothing special. I would like to see more variety on the menu, bc I eat there so often!

Jim B.

Yelp
River Tavern is my #1 go-to for awesome food and cocktails for any occasion in Chester. They do as much farm to table as they possibly can and food is cooked perfectly. The bar staff is creative & seasoned. Service is friendly as can be. Shout out to Miller, Noah, and the rest who are also the best.

Joe D.

Yelp
I had fantastic meal here. A seasonal beet salad with blueberries, tomatoes and burrata cheese. My main was a halibut with fresh herds and seasonal vegetables that was absolutely perfectly cooked and full of flavor and almond tart with the best whipped cream ever. I was very pleasantly surprised as I had heard good things before I went and all expectations were surpassed. I'll go again in a second.

Aneta S.

Yelp
First time and it was incredible. Our waitress was so nice and helpful with the menu. From the drinks to dinner everything was just fantastic. Definitely will be going back.

Steve V.

Yelp
I've been here many times in the past several years. Unfortunately, my in-laws were treated so poorly we avoided it for years. Our maiden voyage was not disappointing, though, with both attentive service and very good cuisine. Since we have come here often. We recently visited this Friday (May 26, 2023) before seeing a play in Ivorytown. We made a reservation for three for five when they open. We were there a few minutes early, but like the others around us, we were completely ignored. This is not McDonalds where you wait for them to unlock the door, so they should at least acknowledge those lining up. Instead we were made to feel like we were in the way. A few minutes after five, no one invited us in and a few people bullied their way in and sat down - not our style. My wife sought out a manager (I think she was a manger but am horrified to think so) who was impatient, admonished her for not telling us we were four and not three as originally planned. Okay, let's examine this. They seat people in multiples of four (I.e. three take up a table for four, five take up table space for six, and so on) so what's the big deal? I'll take responsibility for the snafu, but not the poor treatment! Finally we were seated and we asked if we could be seated in the back room, which was empty at the time. They told us that we needed to tell them when we made the reservation, but another review reveals this to be nonsense because that party was told they don't reserve specific tables. We are out of town guests, and though we come here often, are not recognized as one of the regulars, who are clearly favored here. My mother in law, who we visit several times a year, loves this restaurant so we often come here and have for years to please her, and she comes very often herself and brings other visitors frequently. Anyway, I've wasted enough time on this restaurant. I emailed them privately going into much more detail in an effort to help them out. I also responded to a Resy request for feedback. I have not received any acknowledgment from RIVER tavern, which tells me that they don't value constructive feedback. In Washington DC this place would get 3-3.5 on social media, yet they seem to think they are something special. As to the food, it used to be excellent and now is average to good. Our steaks, ordered medium rare, came out medium well to medium in the center, and I would have sent it back for not the worry that it would make us late to the theater. Our drinks were inconsistent (awful margarita), and my mother in law's pasta, while tasty, required a search and rescue for the seafood that was supposed to be there. So unless you're a regular, you will be treated much more favorably at Village Bistro, Grano Arso or Rustica when visiting Chester. Food was a three, ambiance a two but not their fault (three loud and drunk men-children next to us talking about their sexual exploits or fantasies thereof), and while our server Noa gets a five, everyone else gets a one to two. Incompetent management needs improvement. But likely little will change because the competition is limited. Nevertheless, check out the excellent competition.

Linda G.

Yelp
My husband's College friend invited us to experience the food at River Tavern. And, an experience of wonderful flavors & aromas come to your table with each and every dish. My salad was so delicious! Mixed flavors of fresh local beets, blueberries & Liuzzi cheese with their basil pesto and balsamic glaze could take you to a heavenly place! The entire dinner & compliments were all so well done. We were seated comfortably & well spaced from other guests. The Pattaconk Brook meanders behind the restaurant and we sat looking out at lovely green trees & the brook. We were able to have private conversations. The wood paneling with accent lighting made our eating environment fresh, clean and welcoming. Wines and beverages are notable also. Yelp
I'm going to start by saying if Yelp allowed for 10 star ratings it still wouldn't be enough stars to give our experience at River Tavern. Following recommendations on Yelp brought us here for our empty nester date night. We were seated right away for a 5:15 reservation. For starters we tried the steamed pork buns and arancini. The pork buns were these amazing puffs of heaven generously stuffed with crispy pork belly, hoisin sauce, topped with carrots, onions and cilantro. The arancini (4) were made with mushroom risotto resting in a gentle light sauce. For dinner we ordered the Pasta with Pork/Beef Ragú and Chilaquiles. The pasta, house made, was cooked al dente and sauce the perfect blend of spices. Chilaquiles, served in a piping hot pot was layers of tender chicken, sauce, cheeses and tortillas. Topped with cheese that was the best oven browned crispness and a nice 1/4 sliced avocado. With the recommendation of our hostess, we tried the date pudding. It was served with a hot caramel sauce and generous dollop of light whipped cream. Quite possibly one of the best desserts we've ever tasted. Generous portions happily sent us out the door with leftovers for a couple meals. Definitely worth the price. Highly recommend making reservations at least week in advance. Oh if you like the buzz of a working kitchen, take trip down the hall by the bar and check it out!

Yelp
Very rude. Walked in with my wife to have lunch. Tried to sit at the bar. There were 4 empty bar stools. We were told very snottily that we don't serve at the bar! And that there was no available tables. Then why the hell do you have barstools at your bar??? No problem, I'll gladly go next door to the PATTACONK!!! WILL NEVER EVER EVEN CONSIDER GOING BACK!!! Far too many places in that area to go to now.

Yelp
I took my husband to the river Tavern for his birthday dinner this weekend. I haven't been since Covid started so it's been a long time. We had a reservation for 7:15 PM don't go without a reservation. They are still not doing any seating at the bar. So you can't really hang out and wait for a table. I find their menu lean strong towards Asian dishes these days. Which I don't mind because I like Asian flavors. My husband and I both started with one of those cocktails he had the dark and stormy and I had an Earl Grey gin tea drink that was very good. My husband had the oysters on the half shell and I had the steam pork belly buns for an appetizer. The buns were delicious vibrant flavors with homemade pickles and delicious pork belly. My husband enjoyed his voice to tail. We both opted for a pasta dish for dinner he had the seafood pasta I had the Ragu of pork and beef both are served over their homemade spaghetti which was delicious perfect bite to the pasta. We asked for bread to dip in the sauce they had no bread. Sarah was our server and she was lovely. They have spaced out the tables for Covid so you don't feel like you're on top of each other anymore. It was very clean and a great atmosphere to. We skipped dessert because we were full you can never go wrong with the River Tavern.

Yelp
Went there with six others for a birthday dinner and it was great. The swordfish was fantastic, highly recommend! The cod was very good, and the spaghetti with ragu was to die for. The only disappointment was the crispy tofu, which was not by any stretch of the imagination crispy. Since this was the only vegetarian entree I will probably not go back with a vegetarian in the group, so I may need to dump a family member from the A list for my next birthday. The service was perfect, very attentive and helpful without being intrusive. Also, the noise level really hit the sweet spot. It felt lively, but you didn't need to shout to be heard. Finally, whatever you do, ORDER THE DATE PUDDING!

Yelp
The River Tavern is located on Main Street in Chester, which is a lovely area. The restaurant has a nice ambiance. The food is average. My wife and I split a salad, and we asked that the chef split it for us on two separate plates. The staff wouldn't accommodate our request. I ordered a spaghetti dish. It was fine but the portion size was small, and I was still hungry after my meal.

Yelp
Seems like a business that might have already lived it's life, this is the third time I've been there... a friend of mine offered to take me out for my birthday, entrées were $34 seafood stew came out with a couple of farm raised shrimp and some Seabass and a couple mussels, broth was fair at best. For an appetizer we ordered the Crab dip which came with some bread also made from the owners local pizza restaurant sadly when we ran out of bread they brought us tortilla chips because apparently that's what they do? In any event I think the restaurants too full of itself would not recommend it. Too many great restaurants in the area, would definitely bypass this place.

Yelp
Well I would rate higher but they ran out of their signature guac dish... super bummed about that! I had the curry tofu meal and a glass of the rioja. Delicious!!! Definitely recommend going there again. And of course the town is super cute!

Yelp
On Saturday, we went to Chester and started walking around. We went into River Tavern at 1:35 and the woman said she could not see us till 2 o'clock even though there were open tables. We said we will be back. At 2 o'clock we arrive back and get seated. We were there probably there 15 minutes before she came over and took our drink order. When she came to our table, she said it's slowing down a little now. She then said if you know what you'd like you could order it now. We put in our order and my husband ordered eggplant Parmesan. She said that was going to take a little extra time about 20 minutes. We said fine. Our drinks came probably 10 to 15 minutes later. 35 minutes later, she walks up to our table and tells us I'm sorry I forgot to put your order in. We looked at her and she says yeah I'm sorry I forgot to put your order in. We said give us the bill for our drinks. We're leaving. She walks away. She comes back five minutes later and says the drinks are on us sorry. And watched us get up and leave. What she should have done was walk over to the table with something and said I totally apologize. Your meals are going to be a little bit later because of an error that I did not put the order in, but here's an appetizer to tie you over, I think if she did that then we would've stayed waited the additional 20 to 30 minutes and had lunch. That is how she should've handled it to make the customer stay in the restaurant. She seems like she did not even care we were leaving. We walk down the street to their sister restaurant Ottos. The restaurant outside was pretty much empty with only a few tables being occupied. The waitress seats us gives us menus. We tell her what just happened to us at River Tavern and she is the one that informs us that that was their sister restaurant and the pizzas come out here pretty fast. She turned around never asked us if we wanted anything to drink went inside and we literally sat there for 15 minutes and never came back out. While we are waiting a party of four women come standing by the hostess stand. Still no waitress. We got up and left and the four women turned around and they left. Six customers walked out of autos because of poor service. We got in the car and we left Chester. These two restaurants are poorly staffed and poorly run.

Yelp
Delicious lunch at River Tavern today. We were there close to the end of lunch, but were not rushed in any way. The restaurant has two seating areas, both of which have nice views of the inside as well as outside. Starters were the octopus and the crab dip. The octopus was utterly delicious. Perfectly grilled with potatoes, orange, and a mouthwatering saffron aioli. We could have licked the plate clean. The combination of octopus with the orange, potato, and aioli is not something I would have expected but it has perfect balance and taste. The blue crab dip came with plenty of toast points and was creamy and tasty. We shared the chilaquiles, which were perfect. Succulent chicken, tortilla on the bottom of the bowl which was a combination of toothsome and crispy, cheese, sour cream, and avocado. The combination of flavors and textures work beautifully. Finally, for dessert we had the posset and the date pudding (similar to a sticky toffee pudding). The date pudding was rich cake with a deep caramel taste which was complemented by the fresh whipped cream. The possett was out of this world. It was creamy with a hint of citrus, with rich cream and sugary, crunchy pistachio brittle and little bits of candied orange for just a contrasting hint of tart chewiness. It was fantastic and I can't wait to have it again. All in all a wonderful lunch. Look forward to trying their dinner menu as well as other options on their lunch menu.
