RiverBend Lodge, Addo, South Africa - Explore & Book

"Set in lush colourful gardens with countless butterflies, this Victorian homestead has just 8 suites. With its bright floral décor it offers a light, gentle and refreshingly different way to experience African wildlife. Within viewing distance of the nearby waterhole, yet entirely fenced in, RiverBend makes for a safe and peaceful stay in the bush. Nearby Long Hope Villa and Pepper Grove House offer more private experiences thanks to their location in a secluded area of the park. Guests of Long Hope Villa are provided with a personal chef and their own game ranger. After the morning game drive spent passing herds of elephants, we enjoyed a hearty breakfast on the wraparound veranda, with its endless views across the plains. After that, a trek on elephant-back or plain lazing by the pool were equally tempting choices. Delicious homemade snacks appeared out of nowhere throughout the day to save us from sure starvation, before the fabulous 5-course gourmet feast that was our dinner. Staff are unfailingly lovely and enthusiastic, the vibe is cossetting, and the guides are superb at tracking both large and small animals; required in this type of bush as it conceals wildlife. This is a great place for safari enthusiasts who want a relaxed, gourmet-led experience - and it's utterly fantastic for families with children of all ages. Highs Super for families: parents can take offspring on game drives, or leave them with babysitters to have cooking lessons, track small animals, or play in the sandpit. The pool is fenced, and there's a kids' menu Spacious, tranquil suites with water hole views Long Hope Villa sleeps 4-6 and comes with private staff; a great option for larger groups who want more flexibility with meals and game drives Addo was successfully founded to conserve indigenous elephants; now there are also buffalo, hyena, zebra, lion, kudu, jackal, warthog, eland and hartebeest Good value for money considering the standard of accommodation and food, and the all-inclusive basis Lows Some will find the décor a bit old-fashioned and chintzy, and the dining area a bit soulless If children don't feature in your dream holiday scenario this may not be for you, although families are taken on separate game drives wherever possible The game viewing in the private concession part of Addo (where the lodge sits) can be a bit limited at some times of year; but you can take game drives in the National Park as well Note that initial room rates are based on single or minimum occupancy" - Maia Tarrant

We discovered the River Bend Lodge by chance and booked online for one night. ||When we arrived, we immediately extended our stay to three nights. ||The lodge is beautiful, as are the suites. The staff are incredibly warm and friendly. ||Our highlight was the game drives with John, his enthusiasm is simply infectious. He explained so much about the animals and their behavior and made our stay even more unforgettable. ||The fantastic cook also deserves a special mention. The food was a dream every day and although we had a restriction (gluten intolerance), this was not a problem at all. They even baked extra gluten-free pastries for tea. ||I would like to thank you very much for the wonderful stay and we will definitely be back.

She spotted animals from great distances. A great thanks to all working there. We hope we‘ll have the opportunity to vome back again.

This was a return visit to a beautiful venue with warm, welcoming staff who pay close attention to detail. The excellent cuisine is freshly prepared by an accomplished chef. The daily game drives are a joy as the conservancy is large and private and the Ranger is well prepared. The rooms are comfortable and luxurious and the holiday is so rejuvenating. It’s a welcome winter break and a true gem.

A very pleasant stay in a beautiful lodge with attendant staff and great food. Although game watching is a little limited, the property has many different habitats, plants and birds to make the drives very enjoyable.

River Bend Lodge has it all. It’s situated in a large private concession of Addo elephant park and is home to not only the big five, but also a stunning amount of birdspecies - one even more spectacular than the next. You don’t even have to leave the lodge to get up close and personal to many bird species, because the lodge’s garden is a birders paradise. Barbets, hornbills, bee-eaters, wood hoopoos to name a few all frequent the garden, giving spectacular photo opportunitites. There is a waterhole right outside the perimeter of the lodge that attrackts herds of elephant, kudu, zebra, buffalo and eland. You can admire them while being spoiled with a lavish breakfast or lunch. ||But the best thing is you get to go on undisturbed gamedrives with awesome guides without any disturbances or pressures. If you want to stay a lottle longer (to take photos in my case) you can just ask. If there’s something you want to see or a place you want to go, just ask and they’ll domtheur utmost. That makes a world of difference while out on safari! ||The staff in the lodge also all go out of their way to make you feel at home and pampered. Even when travelling alone, I felt welcome and cherished. The lodge really feels like a ‘home away from home’ and makes me want to return again and again. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable (I love the bed, the view and the airo!) and the food is fantastic. You can sit on the terrace and enjoy the night sky and the sounds of the bush while having all the comforts (and more!) of home. I love this place, can’t wait to be back!

Although we probably experienced the worst weather in 6 years, our experience of Riverbend Lodge was amazing. Leo, John, Moses, Debbie, Micky, Mike and many others made our stay very special and we were lucky enough to have seen very close up 4 of the big 5 - This was only because there are not a giraffes at the reserve. We look forward to seeing you again!
