"Hot Chocolate with a View The terrace outsidethis historic café boastsone of the best views in town, encompassing an almost unimaginable collection of architectural highlights and public art from the Renaissance. Linger overyour coffee or a cup of hot chocolate as yougaze upon the Palazzo Vecchio, as well as a copy of Michelangelo’s David , the Fountain of Neptune, and the remarkable assembly of classical sculptures inside the Loggia dei Lanzi. It does cost more to sit outside than to stand at polished wooden bar inside, but this splurge is highly recommended. (The original owners were the official chocolatiers tothe royal family of Savoy; you can take home a pieceof that history in a beautifully wrapped box of chocolates or a jar of chocolate-hazelnut spread.)"

Where to Find the World’s Best Hot Chocolate

"A legend in Florence, Caffé Rivoire began in 1872 when Enrico Rivoire, chocolatier of the Savoy royal family, opened up shop. Try their hot chocolate denso, an Italian version of hot chocolate almost as rich as chocolate pudding, topped with homemade whipped cream." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Stylish Stop for a Drink with a View We stopped by for drinks rather than food and grabbed a spot in the very comfortable outdoor seating area overlooking the stunning Palazzo Vecchio. It was raining and the place was understandably in high demand, the staff were doing their absolute best to accommodate everyone with patience and professionalism. I had an espresso martini (€16) and a beer (€9.50)—a little steep, and sadly expected for the location. Service was great, and while we didn’t stay long, it was a lovely spot to pause, sip, and soak up the atmosphere of the square.

Google
Absolutely outstanding experience. The filet was perfectly cooked — tender, juicy, and full of flavor, with a beautiful sear on the outside and a melt-in-your-mouth texture. It was clearly prepared with great care and attention to detail. But the real star of the night was the octopus risotto. Creamy, rich, and bursting with depth, each bite was a perfect balance of textures and flavors. The octopus was incredibly tender . Easily one of the best dishes I’ve had in a long time.Highly recommend for anyone looking for elevated cuisine and a truly memorable meal

This chocolate haven is nestled in a lovely location, perfect for a relaxing getaway. The chocolate coffee mokkacino is a delightful treat, offering a perfect balance of flavors. The chocolate cake is surprisingly not too sweet, served cold and incredibly addictive. The pistachio croissant is a delightful pastry, and the filling is not overly sweet either. The matcha is okay, but must admit, prefer the chocolate offerings here. The decoration looks like it was in Europe during the olden days. Service could be a bit hectic, it’s a busy place at some times.

Google
Poor service. Stale bread. Poor communication. We order a sandwich and we pay for that. When we asked for a table, they told us this price is not for a sitting table. How do I know?! You should ask you want to sit or not!!! It was rude. I don't care spending money. Of course, I came here to have nice time and spending money. When you serving people you should NOT just consider how much money you can earn per person! It's better to consider what kind of experience your customers will have!!

Google
You must eat here! The location is one of the best in Florence. The Tiramisu and the hot chocolate were incredible. Most of all the service! We only went here for dessert and the staff very very attentive, very professional and I only wish we had time to have dinner here.

Google
Founded over 100 years ago this iconic culinary gem is a must visit. In fact we visited it multiple times during our stay both for dinner, Negroni, and a quick cappuccino and pastry stop. What’s astounding about many of these historical food establishments in Florence is that they keep true to their character and charm and do not turn into tourist traps. The food is spectacular. I loved little sandwiches that you can order with your coffee. Their cantucci are amazing. I brought a bag to share with a friend and ended up eating it all by myself. They also sell this chocolate hazelnut round torta packaged in a lovely blue box that they quickly sell out off. The lady told me it’s their best seller. I bought a few for gifts and my friends confessed that it was absolutely Devine. They perfected an art of making a Negroni. Order one and watch the bartender perform his alchemy right in front of your eyes.

Google
We were so happily surprised by this restaurant! So I was really shocked by the bad reviews/ratings, and I'm glad I didn't see them before coming. We came because of the smell of steak and that it was conveniently located to the Uffizzi Museum. Everything was PERFECT for us. We ordered cappuccinos, the steak alla florentine, and bread service along with an incredible view. On top of it all, our incredible host and server Davidé was just wonderful, kind, and attentive throughout the whole service. He truly gave us just a wonderful experience and made our trip to Florence perfect. We look forward to coming back in the future!

Google
We stopped for their famous hot chocolate. The hot chocolate was pretty good but the service was very bad. About 10 tables filled outside and for the two drinks took about 45 minutes and the waiter made us feel uncomfortable for only ordering drinks and no food around 6pm. Not sure if recommend

Yelp
I always have to try places and this was worth trying. I also think service was good and overall enjoy the atmosphere and that's ultimately why we tried it!

Yelp
On our feet all day (usually clocking in about 9 miles of walking, according to our iPhones) and needing a break... this place (perfectly situated across the plaza from so many amazing sculptures) caught our eye. We walked up, realized it was a bit more 'regal' than we anticipated (including the entire staff dressed to the nines like that one division of Scientologists in Florida), and sat outside. We just needed a bit of a (sugar) boost to get back to 'museum-ing' and we each got a drink and snack. They brought out this cool complimentary 'bento box' with all sorts of goodies (olives, chips, etc.) and eventually they brought out our order. Well, except for my coffee. (C'mon Italy - that's like a cardinal sin for you, right?!) Per the norm - after you get your stuff you can never find a worker. They really keep their distance, whereas in America you'd have them keep hounding you, along with a manager making sure to ask how everything is right after your mouth is full. What we did receive we dug. It was wildly expensive. Happy to have given them a shot but don't think we'd return.

Yelp
For drinks and aperitivo this is a good spot. Drinks are €10 as of May '24 and well made. Staff is also nice here as well. Inside is clean and well sorted. Supposedly they are one of the inventors of Negroni, which was quite good, so I will give them that. Spritz was also good. Would come back for drinks and possibly food. They also have pastries and espresso.

Yelp
The dinner we had was incredible! I had a steamed lasagna with truffles. Usually lasagna can be heavy but this version was considerably less heavy and was delicious. Our family and friends all had different dishes and we tasted them all. We did not have expect to have such good food in a central tourist spot such as this!

Yelp
I just drank the BEST hot chocolate and ate the silkiest fruit creme tart I have ever had in my life! Incredible! I highly recommend to indulge and sit and watch the world go by!

Yelp
This place is in Florence Italy--AND the "cold chocolate" was amazing!!!!! And the pasta dish I had with pecorino cheese was sooooooo good!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Beautifully appointed cafe with outdoor seating perfect for people watching on the Piazza della Signoria. They have open seating and invite you to sit wherever you'd like, however some servers were clearly and audibly upset about their tables being taken by small parties. The food was ok, for €22 you can probably find a better breakfast, but you are paying for the location so why not!

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
Good options for small bites and cocktails. Amazing espresso martini and americanos. Excellent for people watching as well.

Yelp
This place is so fun. The seats are pink and the waiting staff are all full of life. We only went for drinks and dessert and I think it's so worth it to go..we went twice in 2 days haha.

Yelp
In today for Cappucino and a snack. My wife had a chilled coffee and I had a Capucchino with a 10 eu Pacino sandwich on horrible panini bread served "cold", prosciutto, Mozzarella and greens. I had to ask for it to be heated and it was dome in a lousy fashion. It had no flavor so I asked for olive oil and it was still horrible. Around the corner I can get an unbelievable sandwich for 10eu and they serve me garbage for 19eu. The lesson, stay away from these pretentious operations who really dont care about good food. My bill was 29eu? Lousey small cappuccino and lousey iced coffee. Pissed!

Yelp
Great location and super cute place. I only came here for drinks/dessert and got the chocolate martini. It was delicious, though quite pricey. Would recommend visiting.
google avatar

Yelp
The views from this cafe are priceless and the cappuccino and pastries are absolutely delicious ! We stopped here for a late morning breakfast and had to try three different pastries as we couldn't resist! We enjoyed the millefoglie with the crema filling (Italian custard), the apple tarts and the baba au rum and not a crumb left in our plate. We also purchased a bag of their hazelnut biscotti to take home - can't wait to try them!
google avatar

Minh Thu N.

Yelp
Was in Florence and had to go try the hot chocolate, and Rivoire was highly recommended as the #1 spot in Florence for it. We went in just for the hot chocolate, and it was really good! The atmosphere and environment is really nice and cute, and the servers were all in uniform and very friendly as well. This is a great place to check out, and very much recommended.
google avatar

Yelp
What a view of the palacio becchio, where you can enjoy a drink and some appetizers after walk of around the city. Service was good, drinks were good, but location is pretty hard to beat
google avatar

Krisanna B.

Yelp
I had to find out if this was the best hot chocolate in the world. Definitely a contender, much more research needed to confirm. Definitely one of the top three hot chocolates I've ever had, very rich and sweet but not too sweet. I loved the ambience, the jazz music playing, the wonderful hostess in the front. The waiters were amazing with their starched white uniforms, they must've been hot (it was 89degreesF!) , but they were so gracious and kind. I got the chocolate and it was wonderful from the case. My salad was crisp and delicious with perfect amount of dressing-I got the fourth one Tuna with white beans. I extended my trip just to come and visit here and I'm happy I did. A true gem in Florence, I do recommend.
google avatar

Eileen D.

Yelp
The cappucino and hot chocolate were good, but the prices seem much higher than in the average Italian cafe (6.50 for cappucino vs 2.50). Think it's more for the location than for food.
google avatar

Anthony I.

Yelp
The food was good, not great and overpriced. The server had a positive attitude and was polite. The bathroom was really cool.
google avatar

Bridgette M.

Yelp
The location is top notch. We sat outside and had dinner and drinks. Negroni and Chianti. It was romantic and beautifully decorated with pink chairs and gold silverware. Best to not over order, recommend the Tuscan cheese and meat platter for apertivo. We had lasagna and pappardelle. Good but not the best we have had so far in Florence.
google avatar

Erika G.

Yelp
Florentine steak is a thing in Florence. This place has all the ambiance to try this local favorite. The food is good, the view - come on, it's the Uffizi - is spectacular. This is the type of restaurant that you visit, knowing it's going to be touristy, but hell - let's try it. The waiter was the epitome of Old World elegance. Service is stellar.

A R.

Yelp
Drink only review we didn't eat. In the morning great place for a cappuccino espresso and a pastry. At evening great place for a spritz or a Negroni. Easy stand up bar for both. Although there is seating inside and outside. Really friendly staff, who remember repeat customers and take care of you.
google avatar

Sadaf D.

Yelp
The menu is wonderful and full of variety! The location absolutely perfect and the ambience unique yet enjoyable! There is plenty of seating and a good selection of snacks, food, desserts and drinks! The prices are reasonable but the service is quite slow. We had to ask to check and see if we order up front twice and then we had a server sent our way after 20-30 mins of waiting. Other than the long wait this was a lovely little stop along the way on a rainy day in Florence!
google avatar

Yelp
We come here since years and never been disappointed by the quality of the products and the service. Always a highlight of the Florence lifestyle.
google avatar

Yelp
Tourist trap. As soon as we asked for the bill they were nothing but rude. Not even a goodbye or thank you.
google avatar

Scott L.

Yelp
View and Service is why you sit at Rivoire, not ham or turkey sammiches for €35 for two. Food is almost worthless, unless you get dessert which is the specialty of the house. We had a great time
google avatar

Amy T.

Yelp
The inventor of hot chocolate...that says it all. It is the most magical cup of delicious hot chocolate on a cold day.
google avatar

Swapan M.

Yelp
3.5 stars by Yelpers. Shame shame. Some of the best chocolates you may ever eat. Here we arrive in a great Renaissance city that today boasts the world's finest collection of artwork from the period. Savoia royal family chocolatier opened this restaurant almost 150 years ago. Are you serious? Yes... an old royal family had their own chocolate maker and the legacy continues today. It is pricey. I dropped some serious coin and bought tons of stuff. It was almost ridiculous. Maybe more than I ever have at a chocolate shop, but it was something special. Apparently a few of the boxes are modeled after Tiffany & Co. Some gift boxes even had real silver spoons inside. But no jewelry or bag shopping or stuff like that for me. Just tactical backpack, cargos, travel gear, great food, and now a bunch a chocolates. Was dressed like a bum travelor, sort of. Got great service. Ordered a coffee or a few small pastries I think. Hopefully these chocolates and goodies will fit in our bags back to Cali. 5 Stars to boost.

Yelp
Rivoire is touristy and overpriced, but this is a great spot for people watching since it overlooks the Piazza della Signoria. I usually avoid spots like Rivoire, but it was raining and everyone in our group needed to use the restroom so I decided to buy an overpriced beverage instead of paying a water closet fee. We sat outside, under the umbrellas on the and sipped expensive, but decadent hot chocolates while we watched wet tourists seeking shelter from the rain. I wouldn't eat lunch or dinner here, but this is a great spot to grab a snack or seek shelter from bad weather. Eating at the bar is cheaper, but you don't get to overlook the piazza inside.

Noah P.

Yelp
Lady working the front desk was extremely rude. Do not go here. Food is terrible and service was incredulously long.
google avatar

Caroline L.

Yelp
If you want very average food, served or perhaps better described as waiting to be served by arrogant homophobic men then this is the place for you. Four men who are older enough to know better will hang around in the centre of the outdoor area, chatting in Italian and ignoring their customers and telling them to wait while they chat. I eventually asked them was it their job to serve or was a I mistaken, they called for a woman to serve me instead. All men spoke English as I heard them. They are simply misogynistic men, who wouldn't serve me as I don't present as feminine enough for them to bother with. Disgraceful experience! I would give it no stars if I could. The sandwich I ate was pre made and stale! I am sad that I have started my day this way!
google avatar

Yelp
AMAZING! This little cafe is great for people watching or just enjoying the scenery. It is located right in the main square and over looks some of the amazing statues and culture of Florence. It also is home to the worlds best hot chocolate. The servers are very nice and if you strike up a conversation with them, they will tell you the history of Florence. Also, a little tip, if you have a bite of the food in front of them and tell them how amazing it is, they will just keep bringing out more and more food! This place deserves the best rating and is a MUST when visiting Florence
google avatar

Maria V.

Yelp
Love this situation! You're sitting indoors, having a lovely lunch in air conditioning with a cappuccino and a strawberry frappe, while the poor hot tourists outside crowd around the statues and eat sandwiches in the heat!

Steven C.

Yelp
Didn't have a meal here, just cappuccino and profiteroles. The cappuccino was excellent, but the profiteroles are the best ever. Indescribable -- so I'm posting a photo.
google avatar

Sam S.

Yelp
I don't mind paying in most places for good stuff but, I am afraid €8 for an ordinary coffee is just a bit too much :-( Considering that really good coffee in Tuscany is €1-2 in most tourist places it's a rip off :-(( The location is great but that's about it.
google avatar

Kathy P.

Yelp
A little pricey but delish! Nice location with the view of the square. Pastries are just amazing!
google avatar

Suzana L.

Yelp
One of those great places to people watch. We went for breakfast on the day of the Florence half marathon. They specialise in chocolate so, needless to say, the hot chocolate was exceptional. I would also highly recommend the cannoli, profiteroles (all acceptable breakfast food) and the pear and chocolate turnover. Despite the reviews about the abrupt service, we had a charming waiter who managed not to judge our breakfast food choices.
google avatar

Joseph S.

Yelp
We were here for lunch after visiting the Duomo museum and trudging up Giotto's Campanile. The café is centrally located fronting the Piazza Della Signoria and near the Uffizi and Palazzo Vecchio. We brought an ample appetite. I had the salad niçoise and he had the cinghiale over polenta (pork stew). The entreés were satisfying though the tuna in the insalata was on the salty side. The desserts were less satisfying. His Sacher Torte was dry and bland. My praline combination was fair. We really enjoyed viewing the bustle of the customers insides Rivoire standing and sipping their espressos as well as the crowds of milling tourists outside on the Piazza, no doubt a classic Firenze experience.

Cal L.

Yelp
You're buying a seat on the terrace overlooking the Piazza della Signoria. Well worth it. If you just want a coffee which we did. Wouldn't care to try the food as it's a touristy place nowadays. But the view is what one pays for really. We visited in 2006 and will soon again. The service was polite and efficient nothing less, nothing more and that is all one needs.
google avatar

Suliman A.

Yelp
I had a breakfast it was great, I had a chicken sandwich & Coffee. The great thing in this Restorent that it has a view of the squire. So you can eat or have a coffee & enjoy the view
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
Amazing location, great service without being rushed. We are a party of 7 and were seated quickly for lunch at 1pm. The salmon gnocchi was great and their menu ranges from breakfast through dinner with a kids menu. We all enjoyed our lunch people watching on the Piazza sipping Pino Grigio and Moretti grand cru.
google avatar

J J.

Yelp
I thought this would be on par with the hot chocolate at Angelina's in Paris which is why I went in. I had an 8:15 reservation nearby at the Uffizi and hadn't had breakfast so I figured I would get a hot chocolate with whipped cream to go from the bar. It was 4.50 Euros for a tiny cup of hot chocolate with whipped cream. Compared to Angelina's, although this was slightly cheaper, the size was super small. It maybe was just a little over half full! While it tasted good it definitely isn't worth getting again.
google avatar

Chen Z.

Yelp
This is for a neutral review 3 stars is what you get! My girlfriend and I stopped here for a quick coffee we ordered 2 cups! and it came to about $20 including tip. That was the most expensive coffee I ever sipped on. It was so expensive I savored every drop of it. We sat outdoors I believe we were paying for the view and the heatlamp. All the waiters are older gentlemen with crazy looking mustaches in fine suits. That was a sight for me.
google avatar

Jennifer F.

Yelp
The food was just a touch above decent. The little bites they give you with your drink were a nice touch, but the artichoke risotto just tasted like rice (I've had a lot of good risottos). The negroni was also just ok (slightly too much bitters I think). The wait staff was really nice though, and the people watching and view can't be beat, so if you are looking for somewhere to chill and watch Florence go by this could be a good choice. Just don't look for a lot more than that.
google avatar

Daphne P.

Yelp
Great place for people watching while you are waiting for your reservation at the Ufizzi. I can only review the service and the cappucino- bother were excellent. They have an exquisite chocolate shop inside- just wish I had been hungry! Cappucino is a little expensive, but you pay for the location.
google avatar

Yanyan H.

Yelp
We always stop here for a nice quick coffee and cake, it's actually quite affordable/normal cafe prices if you stand at the bar and don't take a table inside or outside! Don't be a tourist, stop in for your 1 euro cake and 1 euro coffee and take a walk in the piazza afterwards! Otherwise I think it's something like 7 euro to sit outside. No thanks! It's lovely inside too, with the glass chandeliers and beautiful pastry selection.
google avatar

Clara L.

Yelp
i randomly dropped by while my friend was waiting in line for uffizzi we were starving so i grabbed a few pastries and two coffees the pastries (donut and a pistachio thing with cream inside) were SO good my friend's breakfast sandwich appeared boring at first sight looked like an omelet sandwiched between two pieces of boring bread but the bread was SUPER soft and chewy and the egg was cooked perfectly with bits of savory sausage and bacon we devoured everything yum
google avatar

Mike K.

Yelp
To echo what has been said before, this place is very touristy and very expensive. It's certainly one of Florence's most iconic cafes but at the same time if you wander off a bit you could get the same coffee and pastry for much less without the hoity-toity atmosphere and waiters. On the other hand, if you're looking for a little bit of a fancy experience in one of Florence's principal squares then Rivoire is for you.
google avatar

Amanda O.

Yelp
Decided to stop here with a friend for a treat because we heard good things about this place. As we sat down, the waiter was extremely rude to us from the start. It was warm, so we decided to order the cold chocolate drink. As we tried to order he rudely shouted "NO! Can't have. NO!" and kept telling us we could not order this. So we asked for a few minutes, and then tried to order the lemon slushy. He once again screamed "NO!" at us and my friend and I could feel people staring at our table. My friend and I just stared at each other wanting to leave, so he finally said "OK i'll bring the cold chocolate drink." Five minutes later he comes over with two tall things of disgusting, pure dark, watery "chocolate". This was NOT a drink. As he set the drink down he laughed and another waiter passed and laughed with him. The "drink" was disgusting. We "drank" 1/4 of it and asked for the check. He passed us numerous times, and we heard him get nasty with an American couple a few seats over from us. 20 minutes later our waiter finally arrived with the check. We paid over 15 euros for this disgusting drink and horrible customer service. Never again.

Yelp
What a hoax! This spot is what makes it in Florence these days and I believe I have discovered why.... the tourists are killing everything out here. The owners of these establishments are cutting back quality because to the tourists it's all the same. When you come from the States as I do, places like this are a step up from what we are accustomed to in terms of food. However, that said, I have roots here and know what this city is capable of producing. This is far from the best. Went here for the Cioccolata calda that everyone was raving about. It's a rainy cold day here so I wanted something soothing. Now I just came in from Alba days ago, and had a hot chocolate upon leaving at a bar right across from the station. My spoon stood straight up in the decadent rich chocolate lava. It resembled more of a chocolate soufflé. It was absolutely superb and today I get served this disappointment. This was just watered down chocolate. I also decided to try a slice of the gianduia cake that they were featuring in the showcase thinking that this would make up for this poor excuse for chocolate. It tasted like a processed Drake's devil dog. Actually, that's giving it too much credit. Think little Debbie. Not a hint of nocciola. It was loaded with sugar. Just terrible. I took 2 bites and left it sitting at the bar and those that know me know that this is an unusual occurrence. Then I proceeded to the woman that confirmed to my husband it was indeed nocciola. She tried to speak to me like an idiot indicating that there are not whole hazelnuts in the cake and that they make it into a paste which is then infused into the cake. I had to retort, and fiercely may I add. I hate to be taken for my good money and treated like someone that doesn't know any better. Florence has some of the best gastronomy that this world has to offer, yet this is what passes these days. WOW! I hope I did my fellow yelpers/foodies a service to assist them in avoiding this place. I unfortunately was not lucky enough to be forewarned.

Yelp
Soaking in the beauty and culture of Florence is an exhausting task, one that requires a good cup of cappuccino and a bite of occhio di bue to refuel those tired legs/eyes/mind. That was exactly what we did, and it really hit the spot. Location can't be beaten - to be paralleled only by the efficiency of the service.
