"The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) occupies prime real estate on centrally located Swanston Street and this collection of glass discs sits at the north end of the university’s land grab. Melbourne architect (and former professional Australian-rules football player) Sean Godsell designed the multi-use academic space, which opened in 2012, to house students of architecture, fashion, landscape, industrial design and gaming all under one roof. Inside, large warehouse-style spaces are paired with smaller teaching studios and computer labs. The underground public galleries, which are 50 metres long and nine metres high, host up to nine shows a year. And the upwards of 16,000 sandblasted glass discs cloaking the building? They rotate, both to let in and reflect the sunlight. "
UPDATE : I have warmed up a bit to this building after coming here for more than a month but it is really the most disappointing building ever.
-Classrooms are not properly seperated so you’re gonna be hearing the other class and keep getting distracted.
-No proper charging ports provided, like how they come in the floors or fitted in/under the table but here, nah, it’s inconvenient, I get that the buildings old but still could put in more effort and thought to make it work.
-Also, very poor air quality inside I must say. You’re gonna be smelling everybody’s models and crafts and in general smells “dusty”.
-Also the bathroom annoys me so much, already its very tiny and then they placed that giant tp dispenser making it more squished in. It’s sooo stupid.
I expect more from a building where I’m supposed to be learning interior design in a first-world country. I don’t like being bere at all.

Idk what yall are going on about in the reviews. The building is plain and soulless from inside out, which is ironic considering it’s a design and innovation hub.

AMAZING BUILDING WITH FLEXIBLE INTERIOR
RMIT is getting quite a reputation for interesting architecture. This building (often called the button building because of the many glass discs that coat its exterior) is used for a wide range of exhibitions and meetings.

Another great public work by Sean Godsell - simple elegant forms of exquisite architectural detailing. The triple volume staircase and public circulation around the plaza is enthralling.
