A short but violent, beautiful and roaring waterfall can be reached on a wide, paved 0.3-mile round trip hike. Bring bug spray. The appeal is not the height of the waterfall, but rather how it propels between rocks and falls 20 feet into a pretty, swirling greenish-blue pool of the Kings River. The pool looks safe for swimming though I've read it is quite dangerous.
Once you've felt the mist and heard the roar of Roaring River Falls, turn around and head back down the trail. On the hike back, you will have nice views of North Mountain and the jagged cliffs on the opposite side of Kings Canyon. The mountain towers over the treetops, rising over 3,500 feet above the canyon floor.
Take the right at the fork (or follow the river noise). To the left you can also reach Zumwalt Meadow, Kanawyer Loop Trail, Bubbs Creek, and the backcountry of the Sierra, but my only interest was the easy walk to the waterfall.
32 miles from the Kings Canyon Visitor Center, it is one of the last stops for the north side of the park, after Big Stump, Panoramic Point, General Grant Grove, Junction View, Hume Lake (detour), the Scenic Byway and Boyden Cavern, and Grizzly Falls, all of which you will pass to get here. The only thing past it is Mist Falls at Road End a few miles up.
