This place was super cute, designed to be as outdoors and open as possible, and well sheltered from the tall buildings and main road nearby. It’s less than five minutes to walk to the bus stop. The kitchen is clean, as are the showers and toilets, and despite having a lot of people around we never seemed to have to fight to use these public spaces.
That being said, I would not recommend this stay. We’ve stayed in a lot of hostels in this country, and we paid as much here as anywhere, but the room was not good. It was clean, but it was like something between a closet and a large bare plaster box in which two twin beds had been crammed. We didn’t even have a bedside table on which to set and organize daily objects. It was remarkably unbreathable, and we had to leave a fan running 24/7 if we wanted a chance at being able to sleep at night. Their profile claims that the rooms have central air and heating, which of course is untrue. The higher-end rooms have cooling units, the other rooms of fans, but there is no central air in this country so that line simply sets an unreasonable expectation. The rooms pictured are the private suites up front, not the dorms and twin rooms in the back.
The check in procedure is super unclear, as is the staff structuring. The lady who checked us in was great, but she was a working traveler and we couldn’t tell who else we could ask questions of, which is abnormal for these sorts of places. There are typically introductions, and staff or volunteers who take turns manning a desk or administrative position. Yet here, often there is no one to be found and the office is shut up (including at our afternoon arrival and check in time). The vibes around storing food here were weird in a way that is hard to define, which was odd for a hostel. Although there were people around, there were more residential staff than other guests, and the vibe was distinctly less warm and communal than at other hostels. The courtyard furniture is half broken, and half uncomfortable, and they play bad American pop music from 9am to midnight so completing any work here was impossible. They list the check out time as anytime before 11am, but then told us the morning of that we needed to be out by 10:30. And, most abnormally, they charge you a rental fee if you want to use a towel. Even though they state that in their profile, it was nuts to us.
So I would describe the space as being well conceived, yet the vibe as if it were being run by children. We didn’t feel welcome, and we didn’t find ourselves able to relax in the space, so we were glad that we had only booked two nights.
