Rocca Maggiore is a medieval fortress that overlooks Assisi and the Umbrian Valley, and certainly should be visited when you go to Assisi. It was originally constructed in the 12th century and expanded in the 14th century and it served both as a military stronghold and a symbol of papal authority. You can explore its towers and narrow passageways within the walls, and enjoy incredible views of the valley, and of the town below. Currently there is an exhibition of the work of English artist Banksy, included with the admission price of €8.
