Rocca Maggiore is a medieval fortress that overlooks Assisi and the Umbrian Valley, and certainly should be visited when you go to Assisi. It was originally constructed in the 12th century and expanded in the 14th century and it served both as a military stronghold and a symbol of papal authority. You can explore its towers and narrow passageways within the walls, and enjoy incredible views of the valley, and of the town below. Currently there is an exhibition of the work of English artist Banksy, included with the admission price of €8.

It was a rainy day so maybe that impacted my mood, but it wasn’t the best experience. Seeing the Banksy exhibit was fairly cool. I was sad the spiral staircase was roped off- not sure how long it will take to fix??? There was also a concert that night so the crew was limiting being able to walk around the grounds, so views were limited and the grounds were a mess.

The view is great, there is small place where to buy snacks and something to drink. You can walk over there, by car and one agency is coordinating the transportation. To go inside, better to buy in advance the ticket.

Wonderful, easy uphill walk from Assisi’s center (from which everything is either uphill or downhill!). The fort commands a breathtaking view of the surrounding area. Tickets to get in and tour the fort run €6. No need to pay to enjoy the view, but the climb up the tower is well worth the ticket price.

Large restorated fortress at the top of Assisi, within a short walking distance of the old city. We were lucky to also enjoy a Banksy graffiti art exhibition across the different rooms of the castle. Make sure to find the tower or terrace for a panoramic view of Umbria.

This was a real climb to get too. You can drive up. This fortress is nearly 1000 years old and facisnating. The view is spectacular. There was also a Banksy exhibition on which was fabulous.

An impressive ancient edifice. We went specifically to see a Banksy exhibit.

The most interesting place in Assisi. The path to the fort is a bit steep but well worth the effort. Do not miss the tunnel between the main fort and the tower.

We hiked up here to watch the sunset. Beautiful views! The only downside was that there was a concert there the night before and there was trash still scattered everywhere, but that didn't completely detract from the beauty. 2025 #67
