4 Best Day Trips from Austin

"Rent inner tubes, rafts, and stand-up paddleboards to float down the wide Guadalupe River and take in the bluffs of Hill Country. Rockin' R offers different routes down the river and transportation both ways. They can advise on a route depending on what you're up for—a peaceful float or serious rapids. While it's a popular activity among families, many tubers are spending the day on the water drinking beer and getting sunburnt, so the atmosphere can get a bit rowdy." - Mandy Ellis

I've never had a tube pop and used Rockin' R River Rides many times! It's about $25/tube...they also have a small shop that has waterproof bags, sunglasses holders, and caps if you need them for the trip. You can rent an extra tube for your ice chest & I recommend bringing your own string to connect tubes together. Very fun!

Phanmll

Google
Very calm compared to camal river . I’d recommend this for families with little ones . It’s about two hours and very mild rapids with tons of turtle 🐢 love this river more honestly !

Google
Our Favorite Summer Tradition! We come out to Rock’N River Rides every summer, and it never disappoints! It’s one of our favorite traditions. The staff is always so welcoming and helpful, and the whole experience is smooth and stress-free from start to finish. The float down the river is peaceful, fun, and full of gorgeous scenery. There are spots to stop and swim, a few little rapids to keep it exciting, and plenty of shady areas to relax. The tubes are clean and comfortable, and safety is clearly a priority for the team. Every year it’s a blast, and we always leave looking forward to the next time. Highly recommend Rock’N River Rides if you’re looking for a fun, laid-back way to enjoy the outdoors!

Ronnie Acosta

Google
Super fun! Professional… amazing staff. Likely to come back. I wish I lived here. Everyone is so fun. Perfect experience during the summer! I can’t wait to come back! Yall gotta try this!

Google
Beauitful, we went 2nd day after a rain storm. Nice flow in river, Huge gorgeous Cypress trees. Beautiful Homes too.

My family of 4 floated from Rockin R down to The Double. We rented 3 floats and a cooler float. My husband ended up taking his own kayak down. Once we hit The Double exit the guys were so accommodating and kind. Our kids (15 and 11) wanted to keep going so they let us know that we could continue down to the last free exit. There was a pretty gnarly waterfall rapid that felt a little intense to ride although out 15 yo did. We carefully walked the rest of us down along with the kayak. The staff was great! We had a blast and plan to do it again in a couple days!

James Gresham

Google
Great selection of tubes for riding, the prices to get in the water was smooth and straight forward, plenty of staff to keep things moving along, and the bus ride back was a great plus! Having the option to get out after the first mile was super helpful when the weather took a turn. They had a shaded tent area with picnic tables, a food truck, music, and a "Gruene Brew" serving drinks. The river was VERY slow moving, prolly due to the headwind we had, but if you want to soak up the sun for a long time, this is your place. We ended up hand paddling more to stay ahead of the bigger groups of people. One group of about 10-15 even brought kayak paddles and used the halves as individual paddles to keep making forward progress. Our family had a great time overall and we look forward to going back!

Danielle Castellon

Google
Terrible, I went with my family and at first the staff were very nice, quick, and we went on the water pretty quick. After the first rapid, we watched someones tube pop. They rolled down the rapids and had no help. Then we get to the next rapid and my cousins popped. There's no way to get back to the beginning of the river. So once your tube popped that's pretty much it. He had to swim for about 2 hours after that. (With 2 more rapids to go down) We had 2 bee stings during the ride. And it is incredibly slow, if you wanna get to the end before 4hours. You gotta pedal yourself. We were told about 2 hours we would be on water. It took us almost 4. And the price was ridiculous, the bus ride back was too shabby, felt cheap. But it's the best we had.

Yelp
Today at noon there was about an hour wait for tubes, however, they had a nice shaded area with seating. I could not be upset about the longer than anticipated wait because all of their employees were working very hard. They even brought in fresh new tubes to blow up to get us on the river (like a hundred new tubes). They could have easily turned us away or made us wait even longer. They were dedicated to get us on the water.

Yelp
So fun and the staff are so knowledgeable!! Learend a lot and had a great time. You can jump on anywhere along the river, bring a drink to enjoy a drink as you cruise. There are so many places to shop and eat that you pass by so it's easy to plan activities for after. The Alamo is also right there to tour if you like history.

Bri S.

Yelp
The driver was so nice and accommodating. He checked on us during the float. Such a nice business and would 100-% recommend!!
google avatar

Tiffaney C.

Yelp
Amazing experience! They have a full bar, if you order drinks from them rather than bringing a cooler you get a free wristband which gives you access to floats. Brooke was the bartender and she was wonderful! They have a cute astroturf area with picnic tables and a stage, they had live music while we were there. We didn't float the river, but just hung out in the water near the stage so if you're just wanting to chill and stay cool that's an option. They had a taco food truck and the food was great as well!
google avatar

Yelp
It was a beautiful area and the people working were super nice. However, the ride itself was pretty short compared to other rafting places nearby.

Yelp
This was our second time in the past month coming over here and let me preface that we are new to texas so this is the only place we have floated before so! The check in process is a little chaotic. The lines are pretty long for reservations and people get up there not knowing the items they'll need; I'd suggest adding a sign to remind people a key and ID is needed to float because we waited after people who ran all the way back to their cars. The water is warm enough that you don't hate getting in but still cool enough to chill after a hot day. I will say that the water is pretty low so I scratched myself decently on rocks when we were floating in various areas. Overall, we enjoyed the float but was reminded people who have speakers should *not be blasting it by an employee when I literally could not hear her speak. It was lowkey annoying when people are floating right next to you and just start playing music so loud your tubes are vibrating lol The shuttle at the end is quick. There were a few people "directing" where people should stand after they get out and put their tube up but that was very disorganized. We stood there in the front for 5-10 minutes waiting as they decided to load up people who had their own tubes behind us.. it was a little odd the way that they were escorting people but nothing to ruin the whole review over. Overall, a good spot to float but make sure u bring $10 for parking!

Yelp
WATER LOW! Watch your butts! We've been using Rockin R for years and they have recently made some big changes. Pros: The outdoor area around the parking lot is very cute and new! There are tables, bars, food trucks, and a merch area. They also changed the shuttle system and that is a HUGE upgrade. They are now using school busses to shuttle after floats and that is great. Cons: They have some new rules about what can and what can't be brought on the river (city ordinance). They were a bit uptight about enforcing those rules. AND now you have to leave your keys and drivers license when you float and that's pretty inconvenient if you want to go back to your car between floats. It can also be a bit pricy, so just expect that. Overall, this is a dependable way to float the River and we'll be back.

Yelp
This place was awful. We made reservations, not sure why, still stood in line for over an hour. Then they ran out of tubes and as the guys were brining truck loads back up, people were just grabbing them. We got the same tube they use for the coolers. Plastic bottoms that were more than halfway broken before we got to the end.
google avatar

Nat G.

Yelp
Been to New Braunfels many times but this was my first time to float the Guadalupe and Rockin R was great! The staff was able to answer our questions and provided a good recommendation with a full bottom tube since the water was so low. The float was very relaxing- it started at 10 am and there weren't too many people yet. Because the river was low, the whole float took about 1 hour and 45 min, which was a perfect amount to avoid sunburns. I would recommend a waterproof case for your phone if you want to take some pictures. On the slow parts of the float, I was able to take my phone out, snap a few pictures and then put it back in the case. Definitely want to watch your belongings on the rapids parts. There's about 3-4 rapids you'll float over. It's very fun!

Yelp
Definitely recommend arriving at 9am for weekend tubing. We got in the water at 930 and it took us about 2.5 hours to get down the river and when we were crossing the bridge as we left we could see well over 500 tubes in the water and more coming. The staff was friendly, they filled our 5"tubes, and gave us all the pertinent info to enjoy our float.
google avatar

Brooke B.

Yelp
Great experience! If you get your tickets ahead of time...you get in and out of the line. The earlier the better. We picked up tubes at 10am and walked straight up. Ordered 2 bottomless and 1 with a bottom. They make it very clear which routes to take and where to exit to get back on the shuttle. Super easy and fun! Water was low in some spots...so bumped our knees, backs, and butts. BRING SHOES WITH TOUGH BOTTOMS!! The rocks hurt when you don't have shoes!! When we got back the 1:00 line was SUPER LONG! They do offer for $5 another round of river ride. FYI-We brought a super heavy cooler...which proved to be dead weight in the river.

Marcos R.

Yelp
The float was amazing! Me and my family loved it was a joyful experience. The staff was lovely and very helpful. I was informed that they had gotten me management and compared to the previous times that I have been to float with Rockin 'R I have never had such a delightful experience. I would 100% recommend to any first-time floaters.
google avatar

Kiara D.

Yelp
The Gruene rd location is perfect! Access directly to the river, & $10 parking (having to walk a mile with a tube SUCKS). I float pretty often, weekdays only to avoid the crowd. This is my favorite float, San Marcos is more of a swim (or idk where I was at), The Comal river is cool (has tube shoots, not good for pup). If you're a weekend-er you'll catch the little food truck park opened nearby. - bring your own tube (costs about the same or more to rent) - family friendly
google avatar

Melinda N.

Yelp
With the water levels so low, the pace was slow. And definitely butts up when you're going down the "rapids" there was plenty of parking. the staff seemed kinda lacksidaisical or maybe they were just hot. there are mesh bags to hold your stuff. bring rope so you can tie yourselves together, but i don't recommend more than 3. they provide life vests which is awesome.
google avatar

Meow M.

Yelp
Seamless process of reservations made in advance. Beautiful river, clean, appreciate the container policy, however no bags are checked. Shuttle ride easy. The tubes with bottoms are nothing more than a standard black rubber tube with a cardboard like cutout strapped to the tube. That means, your bottom can get loose, and detach. Your entire bottom will be soaked either way because the bottom doesn't hold water from seeping up onto you, and everything you bring with you. Bring less, and make 100% it's waterproof. Rocks on rapids everywhere, be prepared. Only saw turtles no snakes. Overall good experience but the tubes are cheap and lousy.
google avatar

Jersey L.

Yelp
Super fun for a laid back adventure! This is super relaxing, it does have a couple quick parts but over all super slow paced! I definitely think it's worth the money. They do have floats for you to put coolers in for your drinks! A great place for families and groups for sure! So glad I got to experience it!
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
In my opinion, floating "The Guad" is a must on the see and experience Texas list. Gruene is great town, plenty of live music and the historic Gruene Hall, the oldest dance hall in Texas. If you do not arrive early at Rockin R, it will take some time to get through the line. Check the website. We were told we could have avoided the one-hour wait by paying in advance online. You need an engineer-type to design a "river keg". Ours has 5 frozen water bottles and holds 42 cans of Miller Lite. See photo. At the end of the float, you will need the water for hydration. Stay away from sugary drinks! Although trees help shade the river, the Texas sun can beat you down! Have someone in your group to manage the music. Kick back and enjoy!

Angela F.

Yelp
This was the best floating the river trip ever!! No lines. Tubes were in great shape. The river was flowing nicely. The bus driver was very nice and kind.
google avatar

Christie K.

Yelp
The overall trip was terrible. To start I paid $77 for three tubes. When we arrived we were told to pay for parking would be $10. Now we are 87 dollars invested. Get all of our stuff walk about a half mile to check in to be told we have to leave out drivers license with the keys no exceptions. Had to go back to the car and retrieve that. Get back to get tubes and get a questionable tube. Sure enough by the time we got towards the end my tube and my Hubby's tube we're pretty much flat. When arriving at the end I was struggling to get my tube and my cooler tube out of the water ( hubby was a ways back with his sad little empty tube) and the kid that was there to help Load tubes was eating and he actually told me "I would help you out but I've got my hands full of food" I simply said don't bother I'm ok. Wasn't at all what I would expect for 87$. Save your money take your own tubes and float on your own. I will not be going through them ever again. I was very disappointed in the service I received. They seem to be to bothered to ask questions or for that fact answer them. The only reason I'm giving two stars is because our driver going back was beyond awesome. He went above and beyond to help us out.
google avatar

Ginger D.

Yelp
Lots of fun but so much confusion about the rules! We followed the posted rules and were apparently the only ones because everyone else on the river had cans of beer like every other River we've ever floated.
google avatar

Letty U.

Yelp
We also use this rental in Gruene. We love that section of the river, so peaceful! We book online to reserve the tubes. We've never had any issues checking in and everyone has always been friendly.

Rudy V.

Yelp
The tubing was ok but 30 min wait in the sun before the driver shows up. after we called them and than the excuse sorry I am the only driver Not good business not to recommend they are a lot of other tubing companies.

Kasey O.

Yelp
Love! They have everything you need. They will literally pick you up in a shuttle, bring you to the river and then take you back to your hotel.
google avatar

Glynda C.

Yelp
the river ride was awesome. the only reason I gave 4 star was the foul state of the bathrooms. All but one stall was working, the others were stopped up. Used tampons were left on the floor. Disgusting!

Brandon S.

Yelp
We used them as our shuttle service for Wurstfest. They get the job done, but don't expect them to be friendly about it. Everyone we interacted with acted like our existence was a bother to them.
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
We had a great time renting tubes from this place. Easy access, staff was friendly. Bus ride back to our car, they kept our keys and ID. They were able to take a credit card in the Parking lot. I was worried we would have to have cash. Lot was very clean and had a nice bathroom. There was a store there too to buy any last minute things you might need. Recommend
google avatar

Austin D.

Yelp
It's too bad zero stars is not an option, because that's what they deserve. Their website clearly states, "call ahead of time to find out age restrictions." I was going to hangout for a friend's birthday on the bank and I called ahead of time and was told I could have my 2 year old daughter with me hanging out on the banks as long as she's not IN the water. I arrive and am told this same information by an employee on a golf cart in the parking lot. As im walking in, I am stopped by what I was told was the 'supervisor'.. She turns me around saying I can not be there with my daughter, not even in a chair on the banks. What is advertised as a 'family friendly' establishment was all but friendly to my family. I will not be returning to this area, and as a new braunfels resident who frequents the rivers I will urge anyone not to bring their business here either.

Margaret J.

Yelp
Took the Wurst Wagon to Wurstfest and at $25 it's pricey. Plus they show up with a van and no step stool to get in the van. Shuttle service should be free as it is at other Fests in Texas and Oklahoma.
google avatar

Victoria N.

Yelp
I have been to tubing many times and this was the absolute worse place I've ever gone to. Literally nothing about our trip was worth it. Paying for parking, being charged $29 per person when online it's $25, and the OVER AN HOUR AND A HALF WAIT IN THREE LINES. We waited in 3 different lines and it was absolutely insane. I get maybe 2, the second being the line to be handed your tube but THREE? The second line was purely to be handed a wristband...the first person can't just hand us a wristband? If that all wasn't annoying enough, the tubes all of us received were black horribly cheap tubes. We were wetting the top of our tube the entire float because we were BURNING from the TUBE. This place is horrible and none of us will ever be back. There are so many better places than this, don't bother.
google avatar

Timmothy G.

Yelp
My family and I have used Rockin River Rides several times and have never been disappointed.
google avatar

Amanda W.

Yelp
I'm one and done with this place. Horrible customer service and rude, unorganized girls working at the front desk. They tell you one thing over the phone and then it's a different story when you arrive. Charge you $10 a person to sit on the sidewalk by the River and tried to charge another $10 when my friend wanted to put her kayak in the water. The owner may want to invest in some customer service training for the front desk personnel. Bad from the start.
google avatar

Maren P.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I had an AMAZING experience here, this was the highly of our vacation!! I want to personally give a huge shout out to Malory; so sweet and catered to our every need. Malory made our experience very easy and had an amazingly positive attitude. I HIGHLY recommend getting a tube with a bottom. There was parts of the river that are shallow and we would have scraped our butts pretty badly had we not gotten the ones with bottoms. Our large cooler was also able to fit in a tube very easily. We will definitely be returning and I hope that Malory gets to serve us again since we had such a positive experience.
google avatar

Crystal R.

Yelp
We went this past Wednesday about 10 am. There was no line. We were greeted and processed promptly. The River was very low and we had to "paddle" our tubes because the River didn't flow much at all. It took almost two hours even with us paddling the majority of the time. I gave a four star rating because of the ease processing and because it's not their fault they haven't had much rain and the river was low. I would definitely check river levels before we went again. Oh, and I didn't realize that you could do it more than once! If the River flowed better that might be fun. As it was, once was enough!
google avatar

Julie C.

Yelp
Had a FANTASTIC time with our group of 17. We came in from California for daughters graduation for Texas State , with a large group. They picked up our group, Brent was amazing! Great personality! Did a few pit stops for us so that we were prepared. He was there on time for our pick up as well. Van was nice and air conditioned. We chose tubes with bottoms. Wish the tubes were a little buggier so that you can actually sit up like the BIG white tubes they sale at the sporting good places. They should provide you with rope. Over all it was relaxing, waters were beautiful and the beer was good! Definitely would do this again!
google avatar

Icel C.

Yelp
We went around 11:30am on a Saturday and to sign up and get to the river took about an hour and 10 minutes. They should really consider upgrading to an online reservation to save time. Prices are fair. It was a great experience. If you want a more party vibe do the tubing. If you want a more Family atmosphere do the rafting. Definitely would do again.

Ali J.

Yelp
Friendly and helpful staff! Had a great Friday afternoon floating down the river. I imagine that weekends are inanely busy so try a weekday if you can.

Chris P.

Yelp
We have gone here several times. The staff is very friendly, they have air at the drop in site if you want to bring your own tubes. Always a good time. Last 2 years they had promo tents with samples etc. Great river ride company!

B.C. C.

Yelp
Rockin R is the company to use. We had no wait getting to or from the river. Their staff is absolutely wonderful as well from the counter ladies to the bus driver. A+ customer service!
google avatar

Gina R.

Yelp
Y'all have the best team!! We weren't having the best on the river but the team really turned our day around. Alexis went out of her way to make sure we were taken care of completely. Thank you so much for everything y'all did for us. Beyond great!!

Kayla R.

Yelp
We went Night Kayaking on the Comal River in the crystal kayak w/ LED lights. Very organized and efficient process beginning to end. Kayaking on the river was amazing. We saw night herons, large bass fish, a water snake, crayfish, and a nutria. So much information shared during the event. It was great!

Salvador A.

Yelp
Went on a Saturday. It was packed. There are two exits. The first one had busses picking up tubers but we were left stranded for an hour at the second exit in 100 degree weather! After two calls they finally sent a van and a trailer but the inflatable rafts didn't fit. They wouldn't take us back unless they could take the rafts too so we had to deflate and load them ourselves. I'm sure it's better during the week when they aren't so packed but dang that was an ordeal.

Chris C.

Yelp
amazing trip. great staff. But showers did not work. Best river path for passage was not marked causing a few rock drags.

Jacob T.

Yelp
It's family friendly, family run, and I couldn't recommend them more! Funny, personable people, that are real and that's what makes them so special! We'll be back!

Madison W.

Yelp
Loved this float, the only thing I did not like was upon requesting tubes with a bottom, you're handed tubes with hard plastic cut outs that don't necessarily fit the opening of the bottom, and the straps that hold the bottoms onto the tubes broke throughout the entire float. So, it was rough at times dealing with that instead of relaxing but, the view was absolutely beautiful, the water felt amazing and the area was clean and not dirty at all. I just recommend maybe bringing your own tubes! There are snapping turtles that kept trying to come up to us because someone was feeding them, so I also don't recommend feeding the wildlife as they will chase you down. It was a good run! Will definitely be back!

Noelle J.

Yelp
Ripped off! Not representing Texas pride or sense of hospitality! I'm not only disgusted but appalled at this business, the behavior as a Texan, and an avid repeatedly, or annually tuber. This place is by far the worst representation of what Texas tubing is all about!! First they charge you $10 to come to park and tell you"yes" you can have access to the river free not a problem. So you get up there and you're like I need to air up my tubes like no you got a pay for the shuttle the shuttle is now $25 per person so we like OK well let's go do that will get an extra tube charge on top of the shuttle charge usually it's either pay for the shuttle OR pay for the tube NO NOT THESE HORRID BUSINESS OWNERS you pay both here you're looking at $60 for one person to tube and then get this when they process your debit or credit card they say "they have to round it up" what a scam of an operation. So if you amount is $60.05 they round it up keeping you .95 and charge you $61. I have never heard this before but since I'm in a major fortune company I know a lot about business and will be reporting them to their credit card provider for fraud and the BBB. I don't want other visitors to be ripped off. Workers just sitting in their butt making customers do all their work and over charging for crappie at tubes on the river. Smh take your money elsewhere they're way better places who will represent Texas pride and give you the hospitality that you deserve for the nature/water outing you worked hard and deserve!!

Dana C.

Yelp
Easy to book. Helpful employees. Quick shuttle rides. Cute gift shop. Definitely recommend!!

Monty M.

Yelp
We stopped in and asked how late they would be open a few days before we planned to float. We were told 4pm on Monday when we planned to go. We arrived at 2:15 ready to float the Guadalupe but were told there's a special meeting tonight we closed at two. We mentioned we were told 4pm. She sarcastically stated usually, but things change. There were no signs or any other indication of early closure. I would not recommend! The employees are aloof and disinterested and apparently you can't rely on their operating hours or their honesty.

Yelp
I loved the place it was awesome. Besides having a small mix up with campers stealing our paid spot and taking years to move it was pretty good. The 8hr ride is a must but give yourself plenty of time before it gets dark to enjoy and see all of it. Definitely do not bring a smart watch I lost mines from the rough ride. There's a lot of nice spots to stop off on like fallen Logs and low water areas(water was lower than usual this time). There's actually not any waterproof cases at this location only "water resistant". So if it goes under for more than a few seconds and the rapid water takes your phone it'll likely get a little water in it. Solution: Opt for a IXP 8 waterproof case or bag. They sale these at the BUC-EE'S Store down the street ! Trust me it's a lifesaver and it floats. Much better than the high priced ones from Walmart or Rockin R River Rides. Cons You might have to encourage quiet hours after 12 some people might want to still party or get drunk (relatable) . But the rules are rules. I calmly asked my drunk camp neighbors to shut off their music about twice and they obliged. They need a officer riding on a boat or kayak to patrol for weed I smelled it twice from two areas made my eyes melt last week but I still enjoyed the whole experience! Man this was awesome and I hope this review definitely helps.

Yelp
SO EXPENSIVE and has strange hidden rules that are buried in the questions on the website. $20/ person even if you bring your own tubes. $5/tube. $10 parking. $5/ person for every float after for that day. They make you leave 2 forms of ID even if you bring your own tubes (DL, CC, Keys). (?????) Everyone told us different times for the floats we were initially told 4hrs, then 2hrs and it ended up being an hour. They were trying to say that you would be fined floating on the river without one of THIER wristbands- also ????? Looks like there's 50 people working the tickets and returns but it's only 1-2 people and everyone else is just waking around so even getting wristbands in a short line took forever. We won't ever use this company again.
