WWII Flying Boat Wrecks
Historic Site in Broome
We set out from town beach heading roughly southeast at about 5.20am on a very low tide of about 0.2m (check the low tides, this walk, I believe, is only doable about 23 times a year) to walk out across the mudflats to the wrecks of Catalina and Dornier flying boats attacked by Japanese 'Zeroes' during WWII. The wrecks will become visible the more you walk and as the tide goes out more and more. The streams of sea water can appear deep, but you can walk through them, only at most getting to knee height.
The round walk of about 5km took approx 1hr 40min. There were people walking in bare feet, be careful of coral, jellyfish and other marine life, I purchased some reef shoes from the shop in China town the day before. It is quite muddy in places and a bit slippery. Be sure to allow enough time to walk back before the tide comes in again.
